Death threats made against two cartoonists

first_img Reporters Without Borders expressed concern after death threats were made against two cartoonists – whose names are being withheld for security reasons – after 12 cartoons of the prophet Mohammad appeared in the conservative daily Jyllands-Posten in Copenhagen. “It is unbelievable that one can make death threats against cartoonists in Denmark, one of the countries in the world that shows most respect for press freedom,” said the worldwide press freedom organisation. One of the 12 cartoons, published on 30 September 2005, in Denmark’s top-selling daily, with a circulation of 200,000, shows the head of Mohammed wearing a turban in the form of a bomb, the fuse of which is lit. All representation of the Prophet is banned by Islam.Jyllands-Posten published the series of cartoons to find out if cartoonists in Denmark were operating self-censorship. It made an appeal to cartoonists after a writer complained that nobody dared illustrate his book about the Prophet Mohammad. Twelve of them responded. The newspaper’s editor, Carsten Juste, decided on 12 October to hire security staff to protect the journalists working for him after receiving several phone and emailed death threats following publication of “Faces of Mohammed”. The two cartoonists against whom the threats were made have been forced into hiding.”It is shocking that they have been forced to hide for having published cartoons that caused offence,” the worldwide press freedom organisation said. “No form of pressure or obstacle should force journalists into self-censorship, whatever subjects they choose.””We call on the interior Minister to open an investigation so that whoever is responsible for these threats can be punished as quickly as possible.” A 17-year-old youth who was carrying a knife was arrested in connection with the case on 15 October in Aarhus, western Denmark.Muslim religious leaders in Denmark, who see the cartoons as an insult to Islam and to his prophet on 6 October called on the conservative daily to withdraw the cartoons and to make an official apology. Some 5,000 Muslims demonstrated in the streets of Copenhagen on 14 October, saying the cartoons were “provocative” and “arrogant”.”We live in a democracy in which satire and caricature are generally accepted and religion should not try to put any limits on that,” said Juste. first_img Kawhi Leonard’s playmaking is more than a passing fancy for Clippers Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Luka Doncic injured, Kawhi Leonard dominant; Social Media reacts after Clippers 130-122 victory over Mavs All appears to be forgiven.Dallas reportedly had a strong interest in signing Lakers restricted free agent forward Julius Randle, but that would appear to be dead at this point. Randle was given a $5.6-million qualifying offer by the Lakers earlier this week, which made him a restricted free agent. Randle could still draw interested from the likes of Brooklyn or Indiana.Meanwhile, the Clippers will move on from the only center they have known since 2008.The Clippers management team of Jerry West and Lawrence Frank isn’t expected to pursue top-tier free agents such as LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Paul George of the Oklahoma City Thunder, DeMarcus Cousins of the New Orleans Pelicans or Tyreke Evans of the Memphis Grizzlies. For starters, the Clippers don’t have the necessary cap space. They are expected to be major players in 2019, though, when they’re projected to have up to $50 million in order to sign free agents in a class that’s expected to be deeper and more talented than this one.Related Articles Video highlights, social media reaction after Clippers’ 118-110 victory over Mavericks “You’re definitely active,” Frank said earlier this week, “but you have to have the capacity, so you have to have the salary cap space. Whether it’s via free agency, whether it’s via a trade, you’re constantly looking for ways to improve the roster.”If the Clippers are active starting Saturday, most likely they’ll be in search of forwards. Even after trading Rivers, they have an over-abundance of guards on their roster after drafting guards Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Kentucky) and Jerome Robinson (Boston College) last week. Before trading Rivers, the son of Coach Doc Rivers, the Clippers had nine guards on the roster.Rivers might not be the last guard to depart the Clippers, though.Avery Bradley, acquired in the deal that sent Griffin to Detroit, will be an unrestricted free agent and isn’t expected to re-sign. Milos Teodosic exercised his option on next season, but the Clippers could waive the native of Serbia before July 16, when his deal becomes fully guaranteed.Only $2.1 million of Teodosic’s $6.3-million contract for 2018-19 is guaranteed.center_img Morning Wrap: Full coverage from Lakers-Clippers thriller; Angels, Dodgers going in different directions; Whicker pays tribute to legendary Mike Gillespie DeAndre Jordan opted out of the final year of his contract for next season with the Clippers and became an unrestricted free agent, with the Dallas Mavericks his most likely destination, according to multiple reports Friday. He was due to make $24.1 million if he opted in with the Clippers.Instead, Friday likely marked the end of Lob City, the most successful period in the Clippers’ history. Jordan played a franchise-record 750 games over 10 seasons with the Clippers. He set career marks for rebounds (7,988) and blocked shots (1,277). Jordan, a 6-foot-11 center, was the first piece of the Lob City puzzle, joining the Clippers via the 2008 draft, and the last to depart. The Clippers traded Blake Griffin to the Detroit Pistons last winter and Chris Paul to the Houston Rockets last summer. The 29-year-old Jordan averaged 12 points and a career-high 15.2 rebounds in 2017-18.The Clippers tried but failed to send Jordan to the Mavericks in a sign-and-trade deal after they dealt guard Austin Rivers to the Washington Wizards in exchange for center Marcin Gortat on Tuesday. The Mavericks reportedly did not want to surrender draft compensation in a trade to acquire Jordan, and the Clippers were reportedly resistant to taking veteran Wes Matthews back in a deal.Sign up for Home Turf and get exclusive stories every SoCal sports fan must read, sent daily. Subscribe here.Jordan and the Mavericks can begin free-agency discussions on Saturday at 9:01 p.m. PT and are expected to quickly come to an agreement. Jordan, who grew up in the Houston area and played one season at Texas A&M, might end up taking a little less next season than he was going to make in exchange for the security of multiple years. Jordan can’t officially sign a new contract until the moratorium ends next Friday, however. The Mavericks nearly landed Jordan in free agency three years ago, but he re-signed with the Clippers after several teammates, including Paul and Griffin, virtually held him hostage in his Houston-area home until he reneged on a verbal agreement on a four-year, $87-million contract with Dallas. first_imgCulture is made up of what your company is on the inside. It is critical that what you are on the inside is different than what is outside.Outside: Outside, your people are bombarded daily with negative messages. The news and their social feeds are predominantly negative. Your people are continually barraged with news stories designed to create fear and angst and unrest. The talk of recessions persists years after a recession ended. Stories of loss open every newscast, regardless of medium.Inside: You have to have a message that inoculates the people you lead from negativity. Your message has to be optimistic and future-oriented. Inside has to be a place where people feel safer than they feel on the outside. Hope, promise, and possibility needs to live inside your four walls.Outside: Your people are told that they’re not good enough, that they are somehow broken. They are told that they can’t be more, do more, have more, or contribute more. They are messaged by marketers in ways that drive them to feel as if they are inadequate and incomplete.Inside: Inside, you must have a message to contradict and counteract these infections. A leader sees something in the individuals they lead that they don’t see in themselves, and makes it visible. They see something in a team that the team doesn’t see and brings it to light. A leader sees something in a company that the organization can’t yet see, not only making it visible, making it possible. It has to better inside your company than it is outside. You have to create greater certainty and greater psychological safety. You have to create a sense of community and belonging that no longer exists in neighborhoods. You have to help enable a sense of meaning and purpose that some of your people won’t bring with them, and many won’t find outside. No one knows if Drucker really said “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” If he didn’t, I believe he would support the statement—and its ramifications for leaders.
