We hope this will help to reduce the number of abuses against journalists in Libya, which is still very high.” According to the tally kept by RSF and the LCFP, two journalists have been killed, eight journalists have been physically attacked and two media outlets have been ransacked by state or non-state actors so far this year in Libya. Crimes of violence against journalists usually go unpunished. In a recent press release, RSF urged Libyan journalists to take personal responsibility for their own safety by paying heed to the recommendations in the Safety Guide for JournalistsSafety Guide for Journalists, which RSF and UNESCO updated last December. Created in 2014, theLibyan Centre for Freedom of Press is based in Tripoli. It produces quarterly and annual reports on media freedom violations, organizes campaigns aimed at increasing awareness of the right to provide news and information, and lobbies the Libyan authorities. The French Development Agency (AFD) is supporting the activities designed to improve safety for Libyan journalists. Libya is ranked 164th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2016 World Press Freedom Index. first_imgA press release from University of Manchester concluded that being a teenage mother might be a good thing.  The conclusion was based on observations of the mating behavior of cockroaches.  Dr. Patricia Moore, one of the researchers, wins Stupid Evolution Quote of the Week: “Although it’s hard to compare the experiences of the female cockroach to humans, the biological mechanisms are similar and so an inappropriate apoptosis response to the ‘mistiming’ of reproduction may explain the evolution of the loss of fertility with age.”  EurekAlert reproduced the press release without any challenge. To an evolutionist, human society acts on the same principles as cockroach society.  To evolutionary reporters, any idea that glorifies Charlie is fit to print.  As a prime example of evolutionary folly, this story speaks for itself.[Gong.]  Next.(Visited 6 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

first_imgThe men of muddle earth are wondering what to do with their hobbit prisoners.  Elizabeth Culotta wrote in Science about the ongoing debates among paleoanthropologists about how to interpret the diminutive skeletons found in the Liang Bua cave of Flores in Indonesia, affectionately dubbed hobbits.1  After four years of study (10/27/2004, 06/06/2006, 08/21/2006, 10/11/2006), there is still no consensus on whether they were diseased modern humans or some evolutionary side branch of hominids from Africa.    Paleoanthropologists meeting in Columbus, Ohio earlier this month got their first views of the LB1 skeleton.  William Jungers of State University of New York at Stony Brook claimed the creature had a slow gait, due to abnormalities with its feet.  He believes the hobbit provides a window into the primitive bipedal foot of australopithecines.  For that to be true, Leslie Aiello of New York City countered, it would have had to remain unchanged for a long time.  “How it got there and managed to persist–that’s clearly a challenge to explain.”  Others said there is no evidence for a migration like that.  To invent such a story is clearly a case of “special pleading.”    In short, no consensus has emerged about these small humans.  “Given the wildly diverging opinions on the hobbit,” Culotta ended, ‘Somebody’s going to take a big fall here.’”  She was quoting paleoanthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University in Ohio.  Maybe the fall will become evident by fall (autumn, that is).  Another research team will be excavating the cave this summer.1.  Elizabeth Culotta, “When Hobbits (Slowly) Walked the Earth,” Science, 25 April 2008: Vol. 320. no. 5875, pp. 433-435, DOI: 10.1126/science.320.5875.433.Evolutionists would love to have another case of chimps becoming humans here.  The early hopes have not materialized.  Our prediction: the skeletons will be shown to be human.  Wait and see.  They’ll find a fingernail-sized cell phone or something.(Visited 15 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

first_img10 December 2010 South Africa’s new national space agency will coordinate the country’s major space projects, promote space science research, develop related engineering and technological capacity, and devise and implement a national space programme. South Africa has some of the best space infrastructure in Africa, and is already heading some notable space projects, including Africa’s bid to host the Square Kilometre Array, the Southern African Large Telescope, and the SumbandilaSat satellite. The South African Space Agency (Sansa) will become the umbrella body that coordinates all these projects, while integrating the country’s existing science and technology institutions, such as the Satellite Applications Centre run by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research at Hartebeesthoek, west of Pretoria.Space industry ‘big business’ Speaking at the launch of the agency and the National Space Strategy in Johannesburg on Thursday, Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor said the space industry had enormous potential for growth. Space science and technology were significant contributors to sustainable development on the African continent, and the South African Space Agency had a crucial role to play in this, Pandor said. Growing South Africa’s space capabilities would not only be of huge value to the scientific community in the southern African region, but would also help in addressing the challenges of health care provision, water resources, agricultural mapping, and urban planning and communications. The South African Space Agency would help develop a formal space programme over the next five years, Pandor said. It will promote research in the areas of astronomy, earth observation, communications, navigation and space physics, while growing scientific, engineering and technological competencies through human capital development and outreach programmes.Boosting South Africa’s international profile The agency will also promote cooperation on space-related projects between South Africa and the international community, with an eye to fast-tracking South Africa’s role in international space activities. At Thursday’s launch, Sansa signed memorandums of understanding relating to data access with Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research and the China Centre for Resources Satellite Data and Application. According to the International Astronautical Federation, there are about 74 companies that trade in the aerospace and defence sector in South Africa. The federation will hold its 62nd International Astronautical Congress in Cape Town in October 2011 – the first time the event will take place on African soil. In September, the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town was chosen to host the International Astronomical Union’s Office for Astronomy Development, which will play a key role in taking astronomy to the developing world. South Africa beat about 20 countries in its bid to host the office, which will play a central role in coordinating and managing International Astronomical Union educational activities, as well as in recruiting and mobilising volunteers. first_imgAn education system designed to prevent intellectual development has left schools in South African townships and rural areas poorly resourced and with sub-standard infrastructure. Believing that a safe, bright and resourced environment is conducive to positive childhood development, the folks at the Bright Kid Foundation have come up with a cost-effective alternative to failing schools. The organisation’s innovative Edutainer is a shipment container fitted with lighting and flooring and sports a colourful paintjob, it is a cheap and easily procured classroom and an ideal space for children to learn and grow to meet their potentialThe organisation’s innovative Edutainer is a shipment container fitted with lighting and flooring and sports a colourful paintjob. It is a cheap and easily procured classroom and an ideal space for children to learn and grow to meet their potential.“In 1999 the Mandela Children’s Fund distributed 1 000 of our toys to teachers throughout South Africa. We included a feedback form. One teacher wrote: ‘We love the toys but I’m teaching in a shack. Please send us a school!’” says Nicholas Jaff, media representative for the Bright Kid Foundation. “This request inspired us to develop the Edutainer pre-school classroom which can be sent anywhere in South Africa.”Because the Edutainer is made by converting standard shipment containers the cost of production is relatively low; it is also easy to transport to rural areas, where proper classrooms are most needed.“I am very happy with the Edutainer as it provides me with a professional classroom to teach from and earn a salary for myself and my teachers from the school fees,” says Meriam Petla, a facilitator at Tswelopele Day Care Centre in the Free State province. The Edutainer features safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and burglar-proof windows, and basic such as doors, and an extractor fan and insulation to keep the container warm in winter and cool in summer. It can accommodate up to 25 children and comes stocked with books, toys and educational materials. The Bright Kid Foundation has supplied more than 200 Edutainers and “skilltainers” to communities across the country; its latest delivery, an early childhood development centre, is to Kromdraai in Muldersdrift, Western Gauteng. The skilltainers provide space for development and training projects. The organisation also provides “booktainers” to communities needing libraries. These provide space for residents to read, and come stocked with books and educational materials.SAFE AND SOUNDThe organisation converts decommissioned shipment containers, using only those in good condition, needing very few repairs and which are still structurally sound.“All our Edutainers … are MANTAG certified, ” says Jaff. A MANTAG certification is awarded to construction and conversion projects that meet stringent standards as laid out in the Agrément Innovative Construction Assessments, affiliated with the Department of Public Works. The assessment investigates and certifies the quality of insulation, ventilation, fire safety precautions, acoustic specifications and heat extraction, among other conversion requirements.Because the Edutainer is made by converting standard shipment containers the cost of production is relatively low; it is also easy to transport to rural areas, where proper classrooms are most neededThe Bright Kid Foundation Edutainer is the only South African container conversion with an official MANTAG certificate. The foundation also works with the Department of Education, several sector education and training authority (Seta) organisations, and service providers on skills development and enterprise development projects. The partnerships involve the Foundation delivering skilltainers to communities, and the department, Setas and service providers are responsible for using them correctly.“We believe that the work we do will have a major impact in improving the quality of life for those who are taught and trained in our skilltainer, Edutainers and booktainers,” says Jaff. “We are very happy to be able to improve the quality of people’s lives and to help improve the prospects for growth and success of South Africa.”PLAY YOUR PARTThe Bright Kid Foundation needs funding to continue to convert and supply containers.Corporate donors can improve BBBEE scorecards and opt to display company logos on sponsored containers.Contact the foundation at +27 11 786 3169 or 082 852 4867, via email, or visit the donate page.last_img read more

NEW YORK (AP) — As the 100th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s birth approached, Sharon Robinson is sure her father would have a lot to say about the current political climate in the United States if he were still alive.“I know he would be outraged,” she said.In this Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 photo, news articles about Brooklyn Dodgers baseball player Jackie Robinson are displayed at the exhibit “In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson: (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)Jackie Robinson, who died at age 53 in 1972, would have turned 100 on Thursday. He broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, and the centennial of his birth marks the opening of an exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York titled “In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson: An Intimate Portrait of a Baseball Legend.”It features memorabilia and 32 photographs originally shot for Look magazine, plus footage of Robinson hitting grounders to his son in the backyard of the family house in Stamford, Connecticut. Many of the photos shot by Frank Bauman and Kenneth Eide from 1949 and 1953 had not been on public view previously.Rachel Robinson, the ballplayer’s wife, planned to attend the opening, still a force at age 96. The celebration and baseball’s annual Jackie Robinson Day on April 15 will focus attention on the Jackie Robinson Museum in the SoHo section of Manhattan, scheduled to open in December.Della Britton Baeza, CEO of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, said $28 million has been raised toward a $42 million goal — matching Robinson’s uniform number, which was retired throughout the major leagues in 1997. The money raised covers construction costs, and an additional $4 million is needed for marketing and staff. The overall goal includes $10 million for an endowment, she said.“In this day and age in this climate of our country, we really are going to take on this issue of discussing race relations,” Britton Baeza said. “What better place than a place that pays tribute to one of the great integrationists of the last century? So we’re going to roll up our sleeves. We will do it from a position of goodwill and from a position of starting with the facts, if you will, but we’re going to take these things on and talk about activism in sports.”The exhibit, which runs until Sept. 15, is a partnership between the Museum of the City of New York and the foundation, and some of the memorabilia will wind up at the Jackie Robinson Museum.Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has been a major backer of the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the museum, and he will be honored at the foundation’s annual awards dinner on March 4 along with businessman Maverick Carter and musician Kristopher Bowers.“The centennial of his birth is an opportunity for MLB to recognize the historical significance of Jackie Robinson and to continue to teach younger people the impact he had on baseball and society,” Manfred said.Sharon Robinson, MLB’s education programming consultant, said today’s players need to have greater knowledge of the foundation’s efforts.“There was a shift in their awareness with the movie ’42,’” she said of the 2013 film that starred Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey. “A number of players came up to me or coaches and said, ‘I thought I knew the story but now I get it.’ There’s no time better than now because this country needs healing, needs to continue to move forward in terms of not just dealing with racism but sexism and the whole gamut of isms. So there’s no better time to look back into history and see how much has changed but how much work still needs to be done.”___ read more
