first_imgNews February 25, 2009 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Young radio reporter gunned down in Veracruz state for unclear reasons MexicoAmericas News RSF_en Help by sharing this information Reporters Without Borders is dismayed by radio reporter Luis Daniel Méndez Hernández’s murder on 23 February while he was attending the carnival in Huayacocotla, in the southeastern state of Veracruz. The correspondent of “Enlaces Noticias,” a news programme broadcast on several frequencies by the Radiorama Tuxpan news agency, Méndez was shot four times in the back.“There are not yet any grounds for concluding that Méndez was killed in connection with his work,” Reporters Without Borders said. “But in view of the great dangers to which the Mexican press is exposed, we join Méndez’s colleagues in urging the police and judicial authorities to quickly shed light on the circumstances and motives for this tragedy and to ensure that journalists are protected. We also offer his family and friends our condolences.”The shooting seems to have been the result of a dispute between young people but the officials in charge of the investigation say they are still looking out for any signs of a link between Méndez’s murder and his work as a journalist.Méndez was very involved in local politics and was a candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in the 2007 municipal elections in Huayacocotla. A link between the murder and his political activities cannot therefore be ruled out either. The Veracruz state authorities told the regional daily Cambio that three suspects had been arrested but the investigation was continuing.Aged 24 and the father of a one-year-old child, Méndez worked as a correspondent in Xalapa (the capital of the state of Veracruz) and in the State Arbitration Commission press department in the city of Veracruz. He had gone to Huayacocotla to celebrate the carnival with his family.According to the tally kept by the National Human Rights Commission, Méndez is the 47th journalist to be murdered in Mexico since 2000. This figure includes both journalists who were clearly killed in connection with their work and those who were killed for unclear motives. He is the second journalist to be killed since the start of the year in Mexico. Photographer Jean Paul Ibarra of the local daily El Correo was the victim of a contract-style killing on 13 February in the southern state of Guerrero. first_imgMedeama SC coach Augustine Evans Adotey says his side is focused and determined to deny Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s quest of winning a double this season.Ghana Premier League champions Asante Kotoko will come face to face with the Tarkwa-based side in this year’s MTN FA Cup final at the Accra stadium on Sunday. For SC Medeama who missed the league title and the President’s Cup, the FA Cup presents another opportunity to win silverware this season.Adotey appears confident about his side’s chances of winning this year’s trophy.“Coming face to face in the MTN FA Cup final, Kotoko is saying they want to win the double but I want to prove Didi Dramani and the Kotoko guys wrong on Sunday so I’m urging all my fans to come in their numbers to cheer us to victory,” said Adotey“Even in Accra, hints coming to me is that Hearts of Oak want Kotoko to fall so that they wouldn’t brag about winning a double so we have friends of Medeama backing us.“I have respect for Kotoko and Coach Didi Dramani but I will frustrate them come Sunday and win the trophy.”last_img read more

first_img Tags: French Ligue 1top Neymar (left) has 11 while Mbappe has scored 12 goals this season (Photo by Agency)The race for French Ligue One’s Golden Boot takes centre stage this weekend as three of the division’s four leading scorers lock horns at Stade de France.Nantes’ Argentine striker Emiliano Sala leads the top scorers charts with twelve goals along with Paris Saint Germain’s teenage starlet Kylian Mbappe Lottin.Sala will therefore be a marked man when the Canaries try to end PSG’s unbeaten start to the campaign.19-year-old Mbappe’s bid to become the division’s youngest ever top goal grabber has been impeded by extra rest he got from World Cup duty, a three game suspension for marching orders and riots that bedeviled France for a fortnight. After restricting him to a 30-minute cameo in the Coupe de La Ligue on Tuesday, PSG manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to start Europe’s young player of the year from the start.Another of the Parisians’ big guns, Neymar Junior, trails the top scorers by one goal and is itching for a return to the starting line up after being altogether omitted from PSG’s cup victory. The world’s most expensive player joins Mbappe and Edinson Cavani in attack as the runaway leaders seek to bounce back from consecutive draws away to Bordeaux and Strasbourg just before league action was interrupted by riots.Christophe Galtier’s Lille Metropole also have a player interested in the golden boot. Nicholas Pepe struck his best goal this season as Lille beat Nimes 3-2 to join Neymar on eleven goals. The Ivorian sensation once again leads the line together with Jonathan Ikone and Jonathan Bamba in a fabled ‘BIP’ attack as the Champions League chasing Lille welcome Alain Cassanova’s Toulouse to northern France. But the pick of the matches is in Montpellier where the high flying hosts battle stuttering Olympique Lyon. 2011 champs Montpellier feel they can pick point off Bruno Genesio’s side as the visitors had to contend with a grueling cup fixture at Amiens on Wednesday night.Saint Etienne, Bordeaux and Monaco all have winnable home ties against Dijon, Amiens and Guingamp respectively.Cameras are to be especially fully zoomed on Monaco’s clash with Guingamp as it is a winner takes all relegation six pointer.Fixture:Sunday.-Lille Metropole v Toulouse @11:00pm-Paris SG v Nantes @11:00pmMontpellier v Olympique Lyon @11:00pm-Strasbourg v Nice @11:00pm-Angers v Olympique Marseille @11:00pm-Monaco v Guingamp @11:00pm-Saint Etienne v Dijon @11:00pm-Rennes v Nimes @11:00pm-Reims v Caen @11:00pmSunday.-Bordeaux v Amiens @07:00pmComments last_img read more

first_imgAn education system designed to prevent intellectual development has left schools in South African townships and rural areas poorly resourced and with sub-standard infrastructure. Believing that a safe, bright and resourced environment is conducive to positive childhood development, the folks at the Bright Kid Foundation have come up with a cost-effective alternative to failing schools. The organisation’s innovative Edutainer is a shipment container fitted with lighting and flooring and sports a colourful paintjob, it is a cheap and easily procured classroom and an ideal space for children to learn and grow to meet their potentialThe organisation’s innovative Edutainer is a shipment container fitted with lighting and flooring and sports a colourful paintjob. It is a cheap and easily procured classroom and an ideal space for children to learn and grow to meet their potential.“In 1999 the Mandela Children’s Fund distributed 1 000 of our toys to teachers throughout South Africa. We included a feedback form. One teacher wrote: ‘We love the toys but I’m teaching in a shack. Please send us a school!’” says Nicholas Jaff, media representative for the Bright Kid Foundation. “This request inspired us to develop the Edutainer pre-school classroom which can be sent anywhere in South Africa.”Because the Edutainer is made by converting standard shipment containers the cost of production is relatively low; it is also easy to transport to rural areas, where proper classrooms are most needed.“I am very happy with the Edutainer as it provides me with a professional classroom to teach from and earn a salary for myself and my teachers from the school fees,” says Meriam Petla, a facilitator at Tswelopele Day Care Centre in the Free State province. The Edutainer features safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and burglar-proof windows, and basic such as doors, and an extractor fan and insulation to keep the container warm in winter and cool in summer. It can accommodate up to 25 children and comes stocked with books, toys and educational materials. The Bright Kid Foundation has supplied more than 200 Edutainers and “skilltainers” to communities across the country; its latest delivery, an early childhood development centre, is to Kromdraai in Muldersdrift, Western Gauteng. The skilltainers provide space for development and training projects. The organisation also provides “booktainers” to communities needing libraries. These provide space for residents to read, and come stocked with books and educational materials.SAFE AND SOUNDThe organisation converts decommissioned shipment containers, using only those in good condition, needing very few repairs and which are still structurally sound.“All our Edutainers … are MANTAG certified, ” says Jaff. A MANTAG certification is awarded to construction and conversion projects that meet stringent standards as laid out in the Agrément Innovative Construction Assessments, affiliated with the Department of Public Works. The assessment investigates and certifies the quality of insulation, ventilation, fire safety precautions, acoustic specifications and heat extraction, among other conversion requirements.Because the Edutainer is made by converting standard shipment containers the cost of production is relatively low; it is also easy to transport to rural areas, where proper classrooms are most neededThe Bright Kid Foundation Edutainer is the only South African container conversion with an official MANTAG certificate. The foundation also works with the Department of Education, several sector education and training authority (Seta) organisations, and service providers on skills development and enterprise development projects. The partnerships involve the Foundation delivering skilltainers to communities, and the department, Setas and service providers are responsible for using them correctly.“We believe that the work we do will have a major impact in improving the quality of life for those who are taught and trained in our skilltainer, Edutainers and booktainers,” says Jaff. “We are very happy to be able to improve the quality of people’s lives and to help improve the prospects for growth and success of South Africa.”PLAY YOUR PARTThe Bright Kid Foundation needs funding to continue to convert and supply containers.Corporate donors can improve BBBEE scorecards and opt to display company logos on sponsored containers.Contact the foundation at +27 11 786 3169 or 082 852 4867, via email, or visit the donate page.last_img read more

Freshman goalie Matt Tomkins protects his goal during a game against Michigan State Jan. 11 at the Schottenstein Center. The teams tied, 1-1.Credit: Kelly Roderick / For The LanternFreshman goalie Matt Tomkins returned to the lineup as the Ohio State men’s hockey team took four points from a weekend series against Michigan State.Tomkins, who sustained an injury during a 6-1 victory against Niagara Nov. 9, tallied 59 saves over the two games as OSU (11-6-1, 1-2-1) earned its first-ever points in the Big Ten play.A season-high crowd of more than 8,000 Saturday saw the Spartans ride an early lead all the way into the third period, only for the Buckeyes’ junior forward Darik Angeli to score midway through the final stanza.Neither team could find the winning goal in the final minutes or in the overtime period. The shootout ended 3-2 in favor of Michigan State, as Angeli was stopped by sophomore goalie Jake Hildebrand, giving the Spartans (6-10-3, 0-2-2) the extra point in the Big Ten conference standings.Friday night’s game saw the Buckeyes — who are tied for second in the Big Ten in goals per game with 3.25 — continue their strong attacking in a 5-3 victory. Leading the charge was junior forward Ryan Dzingel, whose three goals, to go along with an assist on a goal by junior forward Nick Oddo, extend his streak of games with at least a point to 10.Dzingel credited the play of his two linemates, Oddo and freshman forward Nick Schilkey, as the key to his recent success.“I feel like our line has been clicking and we know where each other are on the ice,” Dzingel said. “I enjoy playing with these guys and I was just fortunate enough to get a couple goals.”Michigan State coach Tom Anastos said after Friday’s game his team “had to be better” in the defensive zone.“I thought it was a big difference in our game because (defense is) really part of our identity,” Anastos said. “That’s the expectations we have, so that was much more in alignment with how we should be playing all the time.”The Buckeyes are scheduled to play against Big Ten opponents for the rest of the regular season. Coach Steve Rohlik said the competitive nature of the two games against Michigan State is something that will be repeated ad nauseam in the Big Ten.“It’s going to be a broken record every weekend,” Rohlik said. “It’s going to make our players better and it’s going to make us (as) coaches better.”Next up for the Buckeyes is a trip to Minneapolis for two games against No. 1 Minnesota. Their first game against the Gophers is outdoors at TCF Bank Stadium, home of Minnesota’s football team. Puck drop for the game is set for 9 p.m. Friday. read more
