Chetwynd lagoons receive $3M in funding

first_imgChetwynd is the latest Peace Region community to receive provincial and federal funds for infrastructure.It was announced today the community will receive funding from the Small Communities Fund for upgrades to the district’s wastewater lagoon treatment plant.Upgrades include the building of a new concrete aeration tank, installation of blowers and underground piping, along with an emergency generator and other monitoring equipment.- Advertisement -The province and Ottawa are each kicking in $1,496,127 to the project. The funds will pay for a little more than two-thirds of the $4.48-million overhaul, with Chetwynd kicking in the final third.In a release, the governments say the upgrades will improve the quality of treated wastewater flowing back into the Pine River, and will bring the treatment facility up to new federal treatment standards.Chetwynd Mayor Merlin Nichols was joined by Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier and Prince George-Peace River MP Bob Zimmer at an announcement this morning.Advertisement “I am pleased to support this project and commend the District for taking the necessary measures to increase the effectiveness of their wastewater system,” Bernier said in a statement.Nichols says he is thankful for the governments for accepting Chetwynd’s application for the funds.“The District Chetwynd appreciates the close working relationship we enjoy with the senior governments and thecrucial assistance that flows back to the municipalities from Ottawa and Victoria,” Nichols said in a statement.last_img read more
