first_img Live Stats Live Audio Story Links The Drake University men’s basketball team begins the 2017 portion of its schedule at SIU on Jan. 1 with a 4 p.m. contest at SIU Arena. The Bulldogs’ second Missouri Valley Conference game of the season will be broadcast on The Valley On ESPN3 and on radio on ESPN Des Moines 1350-AM.The Bulldogs make their annual trek to Carbondale, Ill., fresh off of back-to-back 100-point games including a thrilling 102-98 win over Loyola on Dec. 29 to open MVC action at 1-0 and improve to 3-10 on the season. De’Antae McMurray (Alton, Ill.) scored a career-high 24 points in the win with six assists and now has 15 assists in the last two games. In the month of December, the junior boasted a 3.3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio for the Bulldogs.Under head coach Jeff Rutter, the Bulldogs’ offense has blossomed with the team averaging nearly 77 possessions per game. No player has benefited more from the up-tempo offense than sophomore Billy Wampler (Eau Claire, Wis.). The sharpshooter has scored in double-figures in eight straight games and has recorded 20 or more points in three of the last five games including a career-high 27 points on eight three-pointers against Mississippi Valley State. He is also 15th nationally in three-point percentage this season at 47.4 percent. As a team, the Bulldogs have made 10 or more three-pointers in four-straight games and matched a school record with 17 three-pointers against Mississippi Valley State.SIU returns home where it is 7-1 all-time on New Year’s Day with a 7-7 overall record and an 0-1 mark in MVC action after falling at Bradley, 60-51, Thursday. The Salukis shot just 27.3 percent in the loss and were 2-of-26 from the three-point arc. Armon Fletcher leads the team this season with 13.8 points per game on 46.2 percent shooting. He also ranks fourth in the MVC in steals with 1.9 per game.Sunday’s game will be the 88th all-time between the Bulldogs and Salukis with SIU holding a 56-31 lead in the series after winning the last three meetings between the two programs.Following the game, the Bulldogs will remain on the road to face preseason MVC favorite Wichita State in Charles Koch Arena on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.Print Friendly Versioncenter_img Drake Game Notes Live Video last_img read more
