first_imgATHENS – Panathinaikos may be a hoop power in Greece but it can’t handle Barcelona in European league play, falling to the Spanish team for the fourth time this year, this time by 81-77.The Greens got a break though when European champion Maccabi from Tel Aviv lost at Red Star Belgrade in Serbia, which means the Greek team still has a chance to finish second in its group behind another dominant Spanish team, Real Madrid.In Athens, Barcelona took a 42-32 halftime lead after a late spurt in the second period and it kept Panathinaikos off balance the rest of the game.The Greek team came on strong as the game wound down and a three-pointer from Captain Dimistris Diamantidis brought it within 79-77 but that was all she wrote.Esteban Batista scored 16 points and James Gist had 14.
