first_imgEditor’s note: This is the fifth in a 15-part series in which we preview college football’s top teams. We’ll be counting down from 15 to one, with the final team, released on Sept. 3 – the day college football starts – serving as our national title pick. 11. Clemson TigersThe Clemson Tigers are a trendy pick to win the ACC this year, despite the fact that Florida State is the three-time defending conference champion. Clemson has won at least 10 games in each of the past four seasons, and many believe that if star quarterback Deshaun Watson can stay healthy all year, the Tigers will have a legitimate shot at taking the next step and competing for a national championship. The program finished on a high note in 2014, blowing out Oklahoma, 40-6, in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Can they keep it rolling into 2015?Clemson kicked off practice just a few days ago. The school has been releasing footage all week.#PAWDrill is back! #Clemson pic.twitter.com/ObxgSOlwt1— Clemson Football (@ClemsonFB) August 10, 2015Not everyone thinks the Tigers have what it takes to win it all, though.Where They’re At In The RankingsUSA TODAY Coaches’ Poll – No. 12ESPN FPI – No. 19Las Vegas odds – No. 20The Schedule Clemson Russell Athletic Bowl RingsTwitter/ClemsonSept. 5 – vs. WoffordSept. 12 – vs. Appalachian StateSept. 17 – at LouisvilleOct. 3 – vs. No. 11 Notre DameOct. 10 – vs. No. 17 Georgia TechOct. 17 – vs. Boston CollegeOct. 24 – at Miami (FL)Oct. 31 – at NC StateNov. 7 – vs. No. 8 Florida StateNov. 14 – at SyracuseNov. 21 – vs. Wake ForestNov. 28 – at South Carolina Key GamesOct. 3 vs. Notre DameClemson gets its first real test at Louisville on a Thursday night in September, but there’s no doubt that Tigers fans have had Notre Dame circled on their 2015 schedule for years. The Irish and Tigers are both considered national title hopefuls, and assuming both have unblemished records heading into the contest, the winner is going to have a leg up for the College Football Playoff rankings. Notre Dame’s defense struggled down the stretch last year, and assuming Watson is still on the field for the Tigers, they’ll have a decent shot at knocking off the historic program. It’ll also be interesting to see how new Fighting Irish starter Malik Zaire deals with Clemson’s likely-formidable secondary. Nov. 7 vs. Florida StateFor as successful as Clemson has been over the past three years, the Tigers still haven’t been able to crack Florida State. In 2015, former Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston (who went No. 1 overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) is gone, and the Seminoles will (most likely) rely on Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson to lead the charge. That being said, Clemson lost at home last year, 23-17, with FSU sporting backup Sean Maguire. If Clemson wants to get serious about finding itself in the College Football Playoff, they’ll have to take care of the Seminoles to get there.Nov. 28 at South CarolinaYes, Clemson vs. South Carolina is still just a non-conference game. But even if both schools were 0-11 heading into it, it would still be the most important contest on the schedule. The in-state rivalry between the two, now dubbed The Palmetto Bowl, is one of the best in the sport. The war of words between Dabo Swinney and Steve Spurrier isn’t too bad, either.Key PlayersDeshaun Watson, sophomore quarterbackWatson had a very bizarre freshman season. Back in April, he broke his collarbone. He started the season as the backup to Cole Stoudt, and after performing very well against Florida State in relief, he was named the team’s starter. A few weeks later, he broke his finger against Louisville and was out of action until mid-November. In returning against Georgia Tech, he tore his ACL. After sitting out against Georgia State, he returned for the team’s rivalry game with South Carolina, and led the Tigers to victory, despite the injury. He then shut it down, opting to have surgery instead of playing against Oklahoma. Got all that? When Watson was on the field, Clemson was a much more efficient team. He threw for 1,466 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions in limited work. He also rushed for 200 yards on 63 attempts. He’s a player single-handedly capable of winning Clemson the conference title. But can he stay healthy?I knew my time was coming, I just had to wait for it. So every night I prayed for opportunities like this. Time to go LIVE it! #WishMeWell— Deshaun Watson (@ShaunWatson4) August 4, 2015Shaq Lawson, junior defensive endClemson boasted one of the country’s top defenses in 2014, but ahead of the 2015 campaign, the Tigers will have to replace eight starters. Lawson, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound stud defensive end, should help to ease that burden. He’s one of the best at his position in the ACC. If the Tigers are going to hang their hat on defense again this year, he’ll have to be a menace.Lawson was a Freshman All-American in 2013, and last year, he recorded 44 tackles, including 11 for loss. If he’s able to continue improving, he’ll be one of the most feared players in the country. It’s time to seperate the good from the great. Until January social media… It’s time to go to work boys.— Shaq Lawson (@Shaq_Lawson90) August 4, 2015Wayne Gallman, sophomore running backDespite winning 10 games in 2014, Clemson struggled running the football. In fact, the Tigers finished 81st in rushing offense, averaging just 3.5 yards per attempt. Much of that was because Cole Stoudt, who isn’t an overly athletic signal-caller, was on the field a good portion of the year. But the team’s running backs didn’t put up staggering numbers either. The longest run from scrimmage was only 34 yards – by Wayne Gallman. Gallman, who led the team in both carries (161) and yards (769) last season, will need to improve in his sophomore year. Clemson will need to have a strong running game to compete this year – especially if Watson ever catches the injury bug again.twitter see yall in January. #doakseason pic.twitter.com/6iFngorvX8— Wayne Gallman II (@Wanye_Kanye) August 4, 2015 Why They Can Win The National TitleClemson returns just 11 starters from last year’s team, so it’s possible that the Tigers are a year or two away from competing for a national championship. The squad may not have the defense it had a year ago, given the departures of Vic Beasley, Stephone Anthony and Tony Steward, but head coach Dabo Swinney does seem to have confidence in this year’s unit. If he’s right, Clemson will be formidable. The other major factor, obviously, is Watson’s health. If he can stay on the field, Clemson will be very difficult to stop. But the second he’s sidelined, the Tigers will either be relying on junior Nick Schuessler, who has attempted 10 passes in his career, or a true freshman with zero experience. Every time Watson goes down, Tigers fans will collectively be holding their breath.Regardless, Clemson’s program seems to be in a good place. If everything falls right in 2015, the Tigers could have a special year.Yesterday: No. 12 LSU; up tomorrow: No. 10 Florida Statelast_img read more

first_imgHouston players run our onto the field on game day.YouTube/UHAthleticsMany had high expectations for Tom Herman as head coach. As became very apparent this season, Herman was instrumental in turning Ohio State into an offensive juggernaut despite all kinds of injury issues at quarterback last season. I don’t know that anyone realistically thought Herman would elevate Houston to this level in just one year, though. At 12-1, with an AAC title under their belt, the Cougars are off to the Peach Bowl for a New Year’s Eve showdown with ACC powerhouse Florida State. Houston fans shouldn’t need any help getting excited for this one, but just in case, Houston put together a quick 30 second teaser trailer for the game, and it is quite epic. The Cougs and ‘Noles kick off in Atlanta at noon on December 31.last_img

first_imgCALGARY – It’s more vital than ever that three other pipelines to oil export markets proceed as planned in the wake of TransCanada Corp. (TSX:TRP) shelving its Energy East pipeline on Thursday, says AltaCorp Capital analyst Dirk Lever.Lever says Canadian producers will have to transport any incremental new oil production over the next year or so using railcars, and the pipeline transportation system out of Western Canada will remain tight for years.“We already know the next incremental barrel of production has got to go by rail because the pipelines are effectively full,” he said Friday. In a report in July, RBC Capital Markets predicted oilsands production would grow by 900,000 barrels per day in the next five years thanks to startup of Suncor Energy Inc.’s (TSX:SU) 194,000-bpd Fort Hills mine and several smaller projects, including an 80,000-bpd expansion at Canadian Natural Resources Ltd.’s (TSX:CNQ) Horizon mine and upgrader. It pointed out that about three-quarters of the new bitumen production is not going to be upgraded, which means it will have to be diluted to create a product composed of 30 to 40 per cent lighter petroleum in order to flow in a pipeline. That will increase the demand for pipeline volumes beyond what is required for the heavy oil alone, it said.Opponents of pipeline projects who look at the oil forecasts and conclude they aren’t needed sometimes overlook the diluent component of shipping bitumen, said Tim McMillan, CEO of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.“We will exceed our current and projected pipeline capacity by 2030 with (Energy East) gone … not just on a strategic level but by volume,” he said.Lever said Energy East could come off the shelf and be proposed again for regulatory approval if any of the other pipelines don’t go ahead or if market conditions change to encourage higher production growth.“Energy East was more than what was needed,” he said of the proposal to ship 1.1 million bpd from Alberta to New Brunswick.“Producers weren’t going to pay for that much excess capacity so I’m not surprised it fell to the wayside. If one of those (other pipelines) falls away, then Energy East would be needed.”He said the next capacity increase is expected to come with Enbridge Inc.’s (TSX:ENB) Line 3 pipeline replacement project, which is under construction in Canada and awaiting its last U.S. regulatory approvals in Minnesota. It is expected to add 370,000 bpd of capacity by early 2019.But that additional room will only just accommodate new output from oilsands expansions and the situation will remain tight until the Trans Mountain expansion pipeline to the West Coast proposed by Kinder Morgan is in service, expected to add 590,000 bpd by late 2019, Lever said. That project is being actively opposed in court by the B.C. government and other intervenors.TransCanada hasn’t yet approved its Keystone XL pipeline into the U.S. but Lever said its 830,000-bpd capacity would likely provide enough room for Canadian oil production growth until about 2030, when the industry expects Canadian production to reach five million barrels per day.Lever pointed out that having excess pipeline capacity is important because it gives producers options to supply different markets and offers the pipeline operators flexibility to schedule maintenance downtime.Follow @HealingSlowly on Twitter.last_img read more

first_imgTORONTO – Telus Corp. raised its dividend amid a 10 per cent increase in its third quarter profit and a surge in wireless subscribers. The Vancouver-based telecommunications brand said after making $447 million or 74 cents a share — up from $406 million or 68 cents a share a year ago — for the period ended Sept. 30, it will now make a quarterly payment to shareholders of 54.5 cents per share, an increase from 52.5 cents.Chief financial officer Doug French told The Canadian Press on Thursday that he considered the quarter “strong” because of the company’s wireless and wireline growth, which has come as Telus has been expanding its fibre network to western Canada.Telus saw its total customer growth rise to 187,000 and sales from its wireless unit increase by 2.2 per cent, reaching $1.5 billion. The quarter also brought a 31 per cent spike in new wireless, internet and television customers, which totalled 199,000 — 145,000 net new wireless customers, 36,000 high-speed internet subscribers and 18,000 television customers.“We have continued to see momentum in both wireline and wireless,” French said. “We have had a very, very consistent strategy…We continue to see good churn and good customer service, which helps on the front of net loading.”On top of wireless and wireline offerings, the company has been pouring resources into creating its 5G network and building small cell technology, which is needed to sustain the network.French said 5G likely won’t be a fully-fledged service offering until closer to 2020, but investing early will mean Telus will be able to transition more quickly to the 5G spectrum, when it is available.Telus is anticipating 5G will be a hit with consumers because the company is seeing demand for speed and capacity.“We are seeing data continue to grow and the demand for data continue to grow…We expect that to continue,” he said. “What 5G brings to the table is definitely more speed and less latency, so things will happen significantly faster.”French and other executives on the Telus earnings call noted that the company’s quarter also brought a spike in operating revenue, which totalled $3.77 billion and was up from $3.40 billion in the third quarter of 2017.Thomson Reuters Eikon showed that the company’s increase in profit beat analysts’ expectations, which predicted the company would report earning 70 cents per share instead of the 74 cents per share it revealed. The company also announced Thursday that Denise Pickett, American Express’s chief risk officer and president of global risk, banking and compliance, had joined Telus’s board.Companies in this story: (TSX:T)last_img read more

The teams tied, 1-1.Credit: Kelly Roderick / For The LanternFreshman goalie Matt Tomkins returned to the lineup as the Ohio State men’s hockey team took four points from a weekend series against Michigan State.Tomkins, who sustained an injury during a 6-1 victory against Niagara Nov. 9, tallied 59 saves over the two games as OSU (11-6-1, 1-2-1) earned its first-ever points in the Big Ten play.A season-high crowd of more than 8,000 Saturday saw the Spartans ride an early lead all the way into the third period, only for the Buckeyes’ junior forward Darik Angeli to score midway through the final stanza.Neither team could find the winning goal in the final minutes or in the overtime period. The shootout ended 3-2 in favor of Michigan State, as Angeli was stopped by sophomore goalie Jake Hildebrand, giving the Spartans (6-10-3, 0-2-2) the extra point in the Big Ten conference standings.Friday night’s game saw the Buckeyes — who are tied for second in the Big Ten in goals per game with 3.25 — continue their strong attacking in a 5-3 victory. Leading the charge was junior forward Ryan Dzingel, whose three goals, to go along with an assist on a goal by junior forward Nick Oddo, extend his streak of games with at least a point to 10.Dzingel credited the play of his two linemates, Oddo and freshman forward Nick Schilkey, as the key to his recent success.“I feel like our line has been clicking and we know where each other are on the ice,” Dzingel said. “I enjoy playing with these guys and I was just fortunate enough to get a couple goals.”Michigan State coach Tom Anastos said after Friday’s game his team “had to be better” in the defensive zone.“I thought it was a big difference in our game because (defense is) really part of our identity,” Anastos said. “That’s the expectations we have, so that was much more in alignment with how we should be playing all the time.”The Buckeyes are scheduled to play against Big Ten opponents for the rest of the regular season. Coach Steve Rohlik said the competitive nature of the two games against Michigan State is something that will be repeated ad nauseam in the Big Ten.“It’s going to be a broken record every weekend,” Rohlik said. “It’s going to make our players better and it’s going to make us (as) coaches better.”Next up for the Buckeyes is a trip to Minneapolis for two games against No. 1 Minnesota. Their first game against the Gophers is outdoors at TCF Bank Stadium, home of Minnesota’s football team. Puck drop for the game is set for 9 p.m. Friday. read more

Trevor Thompson (right) looks on during the 2014 Spring Game April 12 at Ohio Stadium. Thompson announced his decision to transfer to Ohio State April 13.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorTo say the Ohio State basketball team is going through an overhaul is a bit of an understatement.First, the Buckeyes saw the careers of two of the most decorated players in program history — a total of 119 wins — come to a close on a cold, windy day in Buffalo, N.Y., more than three weeks ago when senior guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. battled to a 60-59 loss Dayton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Two days later, sophomore guard Amedeo Della Valle told coach Thad Matta of his intentions to leave Columbus and head back home to Europe to pursue a professional basketball career. Then only six days later, OSU got hit with another departure — this time its leading scorer — when junior forward LaQuinton Ross announced his intentions to follow in Della Valle’s footsteps and leave early to pursue a pro career. But with 40 points per game lost from the 2013-14 season, Matta didn’t flinch. In fact, he might even come out on top.Barely two weeks after adding Temple transfer and redshirt-junior forward Anthony Lee to his roster, OSU’s basketball coach landed another big man, as Virginia Tech freshman Trevor Thompson committed to OSU Sunday, per a report by ESPN College Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman.“I love the academics, the fans, my new teammates and the coaching staff,” Thompson told ESPN. “It was the perfect fit.”Thompson also took to Twitter to announce his decision, one day after attending the OSU football Spring Game.“Well it’s official I’m a Ohio State Buckeye Show Me Love #BuckEyeNation !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Thompson tweeted from his personal account, @TrevBallinTrey2, at 1:29 p.m. Sunday.Thompson, a 6-foot-11 center who will likely sit out the 2014-15 season per NCAA transfer rules unless he chooses to request a waiver from the NCAA because of his father’s medical condition, averaged 5.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this past season at Virginia Tech.An OSU spokesman did not immediately respond to The Lantern’s request for comment about the transfer Sunday. Attempts to contact Thompson directly also were unsuccessful. The addition of Thompson brings the scholarship count of the men’s basketball program to 12, one below the NCAA allotted 13.If Thompson does sit out the 2014-15 season, he is set to be one of two centers on OSU’s roster in 2015-16, as junior centers Trey McDonald and Amir Williams are scheduled to enter their final season of eligibility next year. The other center who is set to be on roster with Thompson is David Bell, who is a member of Matta’s 2014 recruiting class. That class also includes guard D’Angelo Russell and forwards Jae’Sean Tate and Keita Bates-Diop.Other members slated to be a part of next year’s squad that saw action in 2013-14 aside from Williams and McDonald — who combined averaged 9.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this past season — include junior forward Sam Thompson, junior guard Shannon Scott and freshman fowrward Marc Loving. Freshman Kam Williams figures to be in the mix as well after sitting out last season as he battled back from illness. read more

Ohio State senior defensive end Jalyn Holmes (11) is escorted off the field in the third quarter against Nebraska in Memorial Stadium on Oct. 14. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorInjuries go hand in hand with athletics. Athletes in all sports have to constantly manage them, even if not recovering from injuries, taking the necessary steps to prevent injuries from taking place. Therefore, in order to fully understand sports at Ohio State, it is important to consider the health of the athletes and the people in charge of ensuring an athlete’s safety. Athletic trainers are an ostensibly underappreciated yet critical component to the Ohio State Department of Athletics.Currently, Ohio State staffs approximately 19 athletic trainers, eight interns and two physical therapists. There are also 10 team physicians, four sports medicine fellows, four nutritionists,  several sports psychologists, a dentist and a pharmacist, all of whom collaborate with the athletic trainers. Throughout each season for the sports, an athletic trainer will constantly need to be on site, whether it be at practice or during a game, to be there should something go wrong. Katie Walker, an athletic trainer who specializes in tennis and women’s soccer, stressed just how different the experience is for every trainer based on the injury-risk of the sport.“Soccer, obviously, is a higher-risk sport, from an acute contact injury standpoint,” Walker said. “So with soccer I’m really dialed into what’s going on in the play; people going up for headers, sliding into people.” Walker added that keying in and evaluating an athlete’s current condition while simultaneously judging how an injury impacts the athlete’s play is a necessary skill for an athletic trainer. For example, tennis players would be assessed on their form and their swinging technique in order to see how an injury might be affecting performance. In fact, the process of guiding an athlete through an injury is one of the primary  responsibilities  for any athletic trainer.“Once you start to know your athletes and know their personalities and have treated them through so many injuries, it just becomes fun to watch people you know and to watch people who you helped get back on the court or back on the soccer field,” Walker said. “And that’s really where the enjoyment for athletic training comes from.”Walker said there are multiple steps to addressing an injury during a game. The first action the protocol calls for is evaluating if the injury is major or is a high-risk type of injury. If the injured player is physically capable of moving himself or herself to the sideline, the trainer will move the athlete to the sideline and further evaluate the injury with the available team physician. Treatment such as ice or taping then might be applied on the field to reduce recovery time. After the game, more in-depth treatment like crutches or walking boots would be applied in the athletic training facilities. Documentation is the final step, as all athletic trainers must report any sort of injury into their computer medical database. Preventing injuries is another key component to an athletic trainer’s arsenal. The term “prehab” is used among athletic trainers  to describe preventing future injuries with players who are currently rehabbing. Walker said prehab consists of working with strength and conditioning coaches to incorporate exercises that focus on building muscle in areas with high-risk injuries, such as ACLs and shoulders. Athletic training also relies heavily on being updated with equipment and technology. Like any medical field, having the best techniques and technology allows for quicker recovery and eases an athletic trainer’s job.Women’s soccer uses Polar Team Pro heart rate and GPS monitors in order to track cardiovascular and muscle stress.  Another technology utilized is Omegawave, which is a system of electrodes that calculate changes in heart rate, which aids with recovery. Omegawave can also highlight any cardiovascular discrepancies that might impact an athlete’s ability to play.Other techniques and equipment are vastly improving and the idea of unique improvements to the athletic training field is being constantly recognized every year. The concept of athletic training is much more than simply concussion protocols and taping ankles. Although they might not be starring in any of the hype videos or postgame interviews, the athletic training staff are essential for keeping Ohio State’s athletes continually performing at high levels. read more
