Hobbit Prophecy: Somebody Will Take a Big Fall

first_imgThe men of muddle earth are wondering what to do with their hobbit prisoners.  Elizabeth Culotta wrote in Science about the ongoing debates among paleoanthropologists about how to interpret the diminutive skeletons found in the Liang Bua cave of Flores in Indonesia, affectionately dubbed hobbits.1  After four years of study (10/27/2004, 06/06/2006, 08/21/2006, 10/11/2006), there is still no consensus on whether they were diseased modern humans or some evolutionary side branch of hominids from Africa.    Paleoanthropologists meeting in Columbus, Ohio earlier this month got their first views of the LB1 skeleton.  William Jungers of State University of New York at Stony Brook claimed the creature had a slow gait, due to abnormalities with its feet.  He believes the hobbit provides a window into the primitive bipedal foot of australopithecines.  For that to be true, Leslie Aiello of New York City countered, it would have had to remain unchanged for a long time.  “How it got there and managed to persist–that’s clearly a challenge to explain.”  Others said there is no evidence for a migration like that.  To invent such a story is clearly a case of “special pleading.”    In short, no consensus has emerged about these small humans.  “Given the wildly diverging opinions on the hobbit,” Culotta ended, ‘Somebody’s going to take a big fall here.’”  She was quoting paleoanthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University in Ohio.  Maybe the fall will become evident by fall (autumn, that is).  Another research team will be excavating the cave this summer.1.  Elizabeth Culotta, “When Hobbits (Slowly) Walked the Earth,” Science, 25 April 2008: Vol. 320. no. 5875, pp. 433-435, DOI: 10.1126/science.320.5875.433.Evolutionists would love to have another case of chimps becoming humans here.  The early hopes have not materialized.  Our prediction: the skeletons will be shown to be human.  Wait and see.  They’ll find a fingernail-sized cell phone or something.(Visited 15 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

first_img(Visited 36 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 The secret of the archer fish’s powerful spits has been discovered, and it isn’t powerful muscles. The fish that shoots bugs out of the air uses physics, a paper in PLoS ONE declared.  By letting physics amplify the momentum in the drop shot out of the water, the fish achieves six times the wallop its own muscles can attain.  Nature News posted a video of the fish and described how it works:The researchers found that the first section of the water to leave the fish’s mouth was traveling about two meters per second. But as the fish continued to expel water into the jet, the speed increased. This back-end power forced more water and momentum into the “head” of the jet. “As a result, the power that the head of the jet can deliver upon impact increases during shooting,” the authors explained in their paper.Vailati and team found that this is similar to a mechanism used by on-demand inkjet printers.  In a strange symbiosis of biomimetics, printer engineers may be able to improve their designs by studying how the fish accomplishes what they came up with independently.Nature News also quoted the authors’ evolutionary inclinations from their paper:The fish’s strategy is evolutionarily clever. “This advantage would come without the evolutionary cost for the development of highly specialized internal structures dedicated to the storing of mechanical energy,” the authors noted.See also PhysOrg and BBC News.   Source: Vailati A, Zinnato L, Cerbino R (2012) How Archer Fish Achieve a Powerful Impact: Hydrodynamic Instability of a Pulsed Jet in Toxotes jaculatrix. PLoS ONE 7(10): e47867. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0047867.Evolution is not clever.  Evolution does not calculate the cost of development.  Evolution does not design specialized internal structures dedicated to the storing of mechanical energy.  Once again, we see evolution tacked on to a design story like some kind of vestigial organ from the 1800’s.The archer fish was one of the illustrations of design used by early films from Moody Institute of Science.  It remains a good illustration today, in fact, even more so.   There’s much more than muscle involved.  The fish has to correct for distortion at the air-water interface, have a perfect aim, calculate the height, and know the energy required to get the bug to release its strong grip on the twig.  All these things must work together for the fish to eat.  How many archer fish had to die before the right mutations came along?  Get real; get intelligent design.last_img read more

first_imgGuide to Performing Bulk Email Verification A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit During the 2008 presidential campaign, politicians and reporters quickly discovered the power of Twitter. These days, Twitter has become yet another tool for politicians to get the word out about political initiatives and for reporters to reach out to their readers. In October, social media analytics firm Sysomos took a closer look at the political Twittersphere and how politicians like President Obama and California’s Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger use this tool and who they connect with on Twitter. frederic lardinois Tags:#news#twitter#web Related Posts The Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Editor’s note: This story is part of a series we call Redux, where we’ll re-publish some of our best posts of 2009. As we look back at the year – and ahead to what next year holds – we think these are the stories that deserve a second glance. It’s not just a best-of list, it’s also a collection of posts that examine the fundamental issues that continue to shape the Web. We hope you enjoy reading them again and we look forward to bringing you more Web products and trends analysis in 2010. Happy holidays from Team ReadWriteWeb!Specifically, Sysomos’ Alex Cheng, Mark Evans and Nick Koudas were interested in examining who the most followed politicians on Twitter are and “how those within the political Twittersphere behave in terms of their follower/followed patterns.” In order to do so, they created a list of 168 accounts of influential politicians, reporters and bloggers from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. that comprise the core of the political Twittersphere. Politicians with the most followersBarack Obama: 2,240,540Al Gore: 1,693,420John McCain: 1,425,419Media personalities with the most followersGeorge Stephanopoulos: 1,344,034Rachel Maddow: 1,287,323David Gregory: 1,244,844Obviously, we can’t really know if the fact that somebody follows somebody else actually means that they are reading all the updates and the political Twittersphere is arguably a bit larger than the sample that Sysomos looked at here. For this study, Sysomos only looked at accounts that had over 5,000 followers and the team acknowledges that it had to make some editorial choices to keep the study manageable. The fact that the map of all the connections between the 168 accounts weighs in at 16 MB shows the complexity of this study, so some editorial control was obviously necessary. Here are some of the highlights from the report:The PresidentWith over 2.33 million followers, President Barack Obama is the most followed politician on Twitter, though he is only being followed by 56 members of the 168-member political Twittersphere. Among Obama’s followers are Al Gore, Portland’s Mayor Sam Adams, London’s Mayor Boris Johnson and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Newt Gingrich also follows Obama’s updates, as does blogger Marc Parent (@mparent77772)There is probably a reason why relatively few political influencers follow Obama. After all, if you want updates from the president, his Twitter account is probably one of the worst ways of following him and most of the updates on Obama’s account aren’t very interesting. Other politicians like Schwarzenegger and John Boehner also update their accounts far more regularly.Politicians and Political Reporters Among politicians and reporters, ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos follows 105 members of the 168-member political Twittersphere Sysomos analyzed, followed by the Newshour (104), followed by John Boehner (98), the Huffington Post (98), and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (92). Within the political Twittersphere, Schwarzenegger is also the most followed politician and Stephanopoulos is the most followed media personality.Daryl Cagle, the cartoonist for MSNBC.com, is the #1 media personality that other reporters follow on Twitter.News OrganizationsBesides looking at individual reporters, Sysomos also examined the larger news organizations in the US. CNN’s Breaking News account (@cnnbrk) has over 2.75 million followers, followed by NPR Politics (@nprpolitics) with 1.51 million and Good Morning America (@gma) with 1.37 million. CNN doesn’t really follow anybody back, though, while the NPR Politics account follows close to 117,000 Twitter users and Newsweek (@newsweek) follows 97,000. The members of the political Twittersphere as identified by Sysomos that are most likely to be followed are the PBS Newshour account, the Huffington Post and the LA Times. last_img read more

first_img“Amit Shah [BJP president] also did not attend the NDA’s dinner meeting in Patna…why is nobody asking about his absence there?”, asked Rashtriya Lok Samata Party chief and Union Minister of State Upendra Kushwaha on Friday after reaching Patna. On Thursday Mr. Kushwaha skipped the crucial NDA meet meant to put up a “united front” amid discordant voices from alliance partners.Speaking to the media at the airport, Mr. Kushwaha expressed surprise over why so much importance was given to his absence at the event, when it was for the party leaders and workers.“It was due to some personal reasons I could not attend the event but my party leaders did,” said Mr. Kushwaha. Before leaving for his Parliamentary constituency Karakat in Rohtas district, he also asserted that there was no discontent in the NDA in Bihar. Also read: BJP’s ally troubles — Upendra Kushwaha skips NDA dinner meeting“I’m not unhappy or displeased with the NDA as is being speculated…NDA is united and intact,” he said. Though, he also confirmed that he would not be attending the iftar party hosted by senior Bihar BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi.Mr. Kushwaha evaded a question on his party’s senior leader Nagamani’s statement ahead of the NDA meeting that the alliance should declare him (Kushwaha) as its leader in the Assembly poll in 2020. “You should pose this question to Mr. Nagamani,” Mr. Kushwaha said.Mr. Nagamani, who is national working president of the RLSP, had said that his party chief “represents a caste group which comprised 10% of Bihar’s total population which is next only to the Yadavs and hence his projection as the NDA’s leader would benefit the coalition.”Meanwhile, taking a dig at Mr. Kushwaha’s absence, RJD Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Manoj Jha said, “What is happening in the NDA shows there is a tectonic shift in Indian politics as the common man sees himself pitted against the arrogant BJP… leaders like Mr. Kushwaha have begun to do a rethink over their alliance with the BJP and many more would follow suit in the near future.”RJD alliance partner and leader of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) Jitan Ram Manjhi invited Mr. Kushwaha to join the RJD-led Grand Alliance but not with his demand “to be the CM candidate as this position is already reserved for Tejashwi Yadav.”Mr. Kushwaha had met RJD chief Lalu Prasad when he was admitted in the AIIMS in Delhi and the meeting had triggered speculation about Mr. Kushwaha’s future moves.last_img read more
