first_imgHouston players run our onto the field on game day.YouTube/UHAthleticsMany had high expectations for Tom Herman as head coach. As became very apparent this season, Herman was instrumental in turning Ohio State into an offensive juggernaut despite all kinds of injury issues at quarterback last season. I don’t know that anyone realistically thought Herman would elevate Houston to this level in just one year, though. At 12-1, with an AAC title under their belt, the Cougars are off to the Peach Bowl for a New Year’s Eve showdown with ACC powerhouse Florida State. Houston fans shouldn’t need any help getting excited for this one, but just in case, Houston put together a quick 30 second teaser trailer for the game, and it is quite epic. The Cougs and ‘Noles kick off in Atlanta at noon on December 31.last_img

Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has assured that the Government will act in the nation’s best interest in its pursuit of foreign investments. The Prime Minister, who was responding to concerns regarding Chinese interests in Jamaica, pointed out that China “is one of if not the largest provider of foreign direct investments globally”, and “much of that… comes this way (to Jamaica)”. Story Highlights Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, has assured that the Government will act in the nation’s best interest in its pursuit of foreign investments.Jamaica’s engagement and facilitation of foreign investors is intended to deliver the social and economic benefits, which, the Prime Minister noted, are critical in enabling the country to attain developed status.“We can’t (achieve this) by shutting off ourselves from the world. We can only do it by integrating and making ourselves a critical element and node in the world economy… and that is what we are doing,” he said. The Prime Minister, who was responding to concerns regarding Chinese interests in Jamaica, pointed out that China “is one of if not the largest provider of foreign direct investments globally”, and “much of that… comes this way (to Jamaica)”.He contends that the island risks closure of the window of opportunity to secure economic independence “if we allow (those investments) to pass us by”.“That means we have to be receptive of investments… not just from China. Jamaica wants to see a diversified portfolio of investors coming in. We want investors from all over to come here and invest. We want people to choose Jamaica to invest,” he added. He was speaking at Wednesday’s (August 9) Barbican Road improvement project contract signing at Jamaica House, St. Andrew. The Prime Minister noted that successive Administrations, over the last 10 years, have developed a strategic relationship and partnership with China, which have facilitated major infrastructure projects. He said these developments are positioned as major legacies that will benefit Jamaica over the long term and reflect the spirit of engagement that has fostered the relationship between the countries since they established diplomatic relations in 1972.China’s Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Niu Qingbao, who also spoke at the signing ceremony, indicated that Jamaica is the only regional nation with which his country shares the level of infrastructure development partnership being embarked on locally.“We look forward to having more cooperation between the countries,” he said. The J$564.7-million (US$4.4-million) Barbican Road improvement project is being implemented under the Government’s Major Infrastructure Development Programme (MIPD) with funding support from the Chinese Government. It entails upgrading of 1.1 kilometres of the 3.75-kilometre thoroughfare along the stretch between the intersection at the Jacks Hill Road and the roadway leading to Russell Heights, as well as the East Kings House Road/Barbican Centre intersection. The roadway will be widened from two to four lanes and is expected to significantly alleviate traffic congestion, which has been a long-standing challenge in that area. The project is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation through the National Works Agency (NWA), and will be executed by China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC).Complementing this will be a $131-million water and sewerage infrastructure installation project, which will be implemented simultaneously by the National Water Commission, and executed by Surrey Paving and Aggregate Co. first_img(A trailer, debris and a smouldering fire was all that was left at the former site of the Sarnia blockade Thursday. APTN Photo) By Kenneth JacksonAPTN National NewsSarnia – When members of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation in Sarnia agreed to shut down their blockade of a CN Rail line Wednesday at midnight that was believed to be the end of it.But it’s not over.Saturday they will attempt to block traffic on the Blue Water Bridge that also serves as the US/Canada border access. And then they’re going to get strategic explains spokesman Ron Plain, who has been the face of the blockade almost from the beginning and as result is facing possible punishment from the Superior Court of Justice.“Now that the blockade is down there will be a Phase 2 and that will include roving blockades,” he said at his home in Sarnia Thursday. They intend to shut down access to selected factories here for up to days at a time in the area known as Chemical Valley.“In my vision of what can happen I’ll look at the research of a company, for example Imperial Oil. I will look globally at what Imperial Oil’s record is with Indigenous peoples, as well as their record of dealing with us here in Aamjiwnanng,” said Plain, as part of wide-ranging interview with APTN National News that will look at the intimate details of the nearly two-week blockade to be aired next week.He said he will use that research to determine how to proceed, but a site hasn’t been picked yet.“From that we will base a campaign against Imperial Oil saying this is what we want as we block you,” he said. “It may be a 12-hour blockade, a 24-hour blockade, 36-hour blockade.”That will be determined by an organizing committee that plans to meet soon and is expected to keep the city updated. Mayor Mike Bradley said he was aware of further action but was happy the blockade came to a peaceful conclusion, which was echoed by Sarnia police Chief Phil Nelson. The selected factory will also be notified in advance of any action said Plain.Plain said the blockade of a CN spur line was ended in a negotiated settlement with Sarnia police after an Ontario judge ordered it shut down Wednesday.Plain called it the first victory of the Idle No More movement. He said the blockade, which began Dec. 21, 2012, had proven its point and didn’t need to continue. Plain said they were already negotiating to have the blockade end on Saturday. The blockade was originally launched in support of hunger-striking Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence’s demand for a treaty meeting between Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Gov. Gen. David Johnston and First Nations leaders.Plain was found in contempt Wednesday of a court injunction ordering an end to the blockade. He was ordered by the court not to go near the site of the blockade unless it involved negotiating its end.Plain is scheduled to be in court Friday to learn what happens as a result of the comptempt of court order.“I have to go back to court tomorrow and find out whether anthing is going to come to me for being the spokesman for the campaign,” he said. The ending to the Aamjiwnaang blockade leaves only the Mi’kmaq from Listuguj First Nation still holding a rail blockade. The Mi’kmaq there have been blocking the railway at Pointe-a-la-Croix in Quebec since Dec. 28, 2012.More rail and highway blockades, however, are expected in the coming days and weeks.First Nations chiefs are planning to hold a national day of action on Jan. 16 which could see the beginning of indefinite blockades across the country.kjackson@aptn.ca@afixedaddresslast_img read more

first_imgJammu: Three civilians, including two women, were injured Friday when Pakistani troops targeted forward posts and civilians areas with mortars and small arms firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, drawing strong retaliation from the Indian Army. With Pakistan using heavy weaponry and 120 mm mortar bombs targeting civilian areas, people have been advised to stay indoors, officials said. “At about 0830 hours, Pakistani Army initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by shelling with mortars and firing with small arms along the LoC in Swajian sector of Poonch,” PRO defence said. The Indian Army is effectively retaliating, he said. Three persons, including two women, identified as Tasveer Akhtar, 19, and Shabina Akhtar, 18, of Chapprian village, were injured in the Pakistani shelling and they have been hospitalised, officials said. A house of one Gani Mir suffered damages in Chapprian-Sawjian forward belt, they said. As Pakistani army often targets civilian areas, people of the Chapprian-Sawjian area are demanding construction of bunkers for their safety. We are living along the zero line near the border fencing but have no protective enclosures like bunkers, said Abdul Rashid of Chapprian village. Two persons were injured when Pakistani troops resorted to firing and shelling along the LoC in the forward area in Digwar sector of Poonch last Friday.last_img read more

GirouxS. CouturierJ. Voracek231069.7 For the first couple months of the season, the Boston Bruins had more problems than they could handle. They had lost more games than they had won. They were firmly out of the playoff picture. Top-line center Patrice Bergeron and his linemate Brad Marchand had both missed time with injuries. So had second-line center David Krejci. Goalie Tuukka Rask was a husk of his former self, and looked for a moment as though he might lose his starting job. Matt Beleskey, who the Bruins decided to pay $19 million because he had a handful of good weeks during the spring of 2015, had been placed on waivers.1He cleared them and now plays for Boston’s AHL affiliate in Providence. This was a team that had won the Presidents’ Trophy as recently as 2013-14, and that had a core made up of several skaters who’d played in two of the past seven Stanley Cup Finals. This was also a team that had failed to qualify for two of the past three postseasons, and that hadn’t won a playoff series since they beat the Detroit Red Wings in the spring of 2014.But since a loss to the Washington Capitals in mid-December, the Bruins have been damn near untouchable: They are 14-0-4 in their last 18 games. The Bruins looked like basement dwellers a few months ago, and now pundits are wondering whether they’re legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. But are they for real, or is this streak just a tantalizing aberration? The Bruins are a balanced hockey team — seven skaters have at least 25 points — but much of their recent form can be attributed to the extraordinary play of a rejuvenated Rask and the top line of Bergeron, Marchand, and David Pastrnak, which has established itself as one of the best in the NHL.In his last 18 starts, Rask has lost exactly zero games in regulation; in his prior 13 starts, he had won just three. During his recent dominant stretch, Rask has stopped 94 percent of the shots he’s faced; during his disastrous stretch, he stopped just under 90 percent of the shots he faced.2Not what you’d expect from the NHL’s all-time leader in save percentage.Goaltender play is notoriously unstable, so these gulfs in Rask’s performance aren’t actually as shocking as they seem on the surface. Even if Rask’s save percentage regresses and he stops roughly 92 percent of the shots he faces for the rest of the season, the Bruins will be in good shape. To explain the dominance of Marchand, Bergeron, and Pastrnak, the best place to start is their possession numbers. Bergeron is yet again among the league’s elite faceoff takers, winning more than 57 percent of his draws.3That number drops a bit to roughly 53 percent on power play draws, but Bergeron can be forgiven — unless he’s the man in the penalty box, teams often task their best faceoff man with taking draws on the penalty kill. Among qualifying skaters, all three on Boston’s top line rank in the top 50 in Corsi percentage,4Adjusted for score, zone and venue. which estimates a player’s possession rate by measuring the percentage of shot attempts directed at his opponent’s net versus his own net while he’s on the ice. And because the Bruins’ top troika are sending so many shots toward their opponents’ nets, all three also rank in the top 15 for goals per 60 minutes.Among lines that qualify, only 11 others in the NHL have a higher combined shooting percentage than the combination of Marchand, Bergeron, and Pastrnak. And their goals for percentage — which takes the total number of goals scored while a line is on the ice together and calculates the percentage of those goals that were goals scored by the line — is by far the best in the league. Marchessault321666.7 None of this is to say the Bruins are a one-line team — they’re far from it. Rookie forwards Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk have already chipped in with 11 goals each, and rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy5McAvoy recently underwent minor surgery to correct an abnormal heart rhythm, but is expected to return in two weeks. is building a solid case for the Calder Memorial Trophy. And David Krejci is a pretty decent second line center, too: He’s scored 24 points in 29 games, and he’s winning 56.3 percent of his faceoffs, by far the best mark of his career.Boston will lose in regulation again — Marchand, who is serving a five-game suspension, and McAvoy’s temporary absences should ensure this happens sooner than later. But there’s nothing in recent memory suggesting Boston’s top line will cease to be a possession beast any time soon.6All three forwards finished in the top ten in Corsi percentage in 2016-17. If they keep getting (and burying) their chances — and if Rask’s ascendancy holds up, which his dazzling career implies it might — the Bruins might find themselves playing hockey in June again. read more

first_imgSo, how do you get in on the game and win? Here, some guidelines to make the most of your Webinar:1. Build in sufficient lead time. Promoting your Webinar well in advance can create opportunities for viral marketing and additional registrations. Remind the sponsor to promote it to their own client and prospect list.2. Provide lots of promotional opportunities for pre-, post- and live exposure such as:• Linked logos in outbound e-mail efforts (starting six weeks before event)• Branded registration, log-in pages and opening slide for Webinar• Branded registration confirmation e-mail• Logo and sponsor message with 60-second voiceover at beginning of Webinar and/or a short demo at the end of the webinar• Logo and link in final slide of Webinar• Opt-in checkbox for those who want to receive sponsor’s e-newsletters• Access to the registration list3. Create customized content. Webinar registration forms, for example, can provide sponsors with custom-created questions about demographics and decision-making ability, enabling them to target promotions specifically to the audience. 4. Allow downloading opportunities. You’ll get attendees by offering a login and password for a downloadable handout. At a Webinar I recently produced and conducted, the downloaded handouts comprised 25 percent more than the attendee rate, which translates into greater ROI for the sponsor. It also  indicated that several people were watching the Webinar on a single computer.5. When it’s over, archive your Webinar. You’ll get additional viewers, giving sponsors more exposure and longer-lasting bang for their buck. Send monthly reminder e-mails to both registered non-participants and to non-registered audience. Naturally, each reminder should include the sponsor’s link and promotional message.6. Let your sponsor help spread the success. Testimonials and statistics from satisfied sponsors help sell other advertisers on the marketing advantages of Webinars. 7. Take advantage of SEO marketing. Write your promotion copy to be search-engine friendly, incorporating key-words to help Google and Yahoo find you. Get other online media to post your press release on their Web site to multiply your visibility on the search engines.Helen Berman is president of Berman Media Sales Institute. Forced to cut budgets in a crisis economy, smart marketers are turning to selling products and services via Webinars. Because they offer educational content without the hassle and cost of live seminars, Webinars are popular with both attendees and marketers who want to bring in new clients, lessen attrition and build market share. As ad pages and show attendance dwindles, Webinar sponsorships are a win all around. What’s more, publishing, online and event companies are ideal Webinar producers. They reach a loyal  audience, add journalistic credibility and offer sponsors numerous promotional opportunities. Depending on company policies, advertisers can choose to control, contribute to, or simply sponsor a relevant Webinar. They can also choose a solo sponsorship or join with other noncompetitive advertisers to sponsor a Webinar. Either way, advertisers reach thousands of targeted, involved viewers with relevant and comprehensive information. Yielding strong results with less time and marketing effort, sponsorships  have been a hit with corporate marketers. According to a study by sponsorship marketing firm  Performance Research for IEG, Inc., “the average share of overall marketing budgets captured by sponsors has hit a record high of 19.5 percent [of marketing dollars].” A recent Forrest Research and Marketing Professionals study adds: “Webinars are considered one of the top three lead-generating tactics.” One recent Webinar sponsor I spoke with recognized the strong match between its product, Webinar topic, and audience the media company delivers. He described the event as a “grand slam”—the most successful provider of qualified leads and the best ROI marketing effort in months. Adding to these measurable benefits, the company recognized the branding opportunity and positioning of the company as a “thought leader.” last_img read more

first_img Share APWith tensions rising over Syria and other issues, President Donald Trump said Wednesday that U.S. relations with Russia “may be at an all-time low” as he moved ever further away from his campaign promises to establish better ties with Moscow.“Right now we’re not getting along with Russia at all,” Trump said flatly during a White House news conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Soltenberg. It was a grim assessment that echoed the words of Trump’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who left an almost two-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow declaring the countries had reached a “low point” in relations.Trump said Tillerson had completed a successful meeting with Putin, where “things went pretty well.” But he said it was an open question where relations go from here. He said “it would be a fantastic thing” if the two nations got along better but cautioned that “it may be just the opposite.”Could Syria have launched the chemical weapons attack with Russia’s advance knowledge? Trump said it was “certainly possible” though “probably unlikely.”The less-than-positive assessments of relations by both Trump and Tillerson reflected the former Cold War foes’ inability to forge greater cooperation, as Trump until recently has advocated.More than 80 people were killed in what the U.S. has described as a nerve gas attack that Assad’s forces undoubtedly carried out. Russia says rebels were responsible for whatever chemical agent was found, which the Trump administration calls a disinformation campaign. The Moscow news conference came after Putin met Tillerson for the first time since Trump took office. The diplomats know each other well from Tillerson’s days as Exxon Mobil CEO. Putin had even honored Tillerson with a friendship award.Beyond Syria, Russia’s alleged meddling in the U.S. presidential election also hovered over what was the first face-to-face encounter between Putin and any Trump administration Cabinet member.Lavrov blasted U.S. claims that it has “irrefutable evidence” of election interference.“We have not seen a single fact, or even a hint of facts,” he said. “I do not know who saw them. No one showed us anything, no one said anything, although we repeatedly asked to produce the details on which these unfounded accusations lie.”He also rejected American claims of incontrovertible evidence that Assad ordered the chemical attack.Still, Tillerson sought to stress the positives from his meetings. He said working groups would be established to improve U.S.-Russian ties and identify problems. He said the two sides would also discuss disagreements on Syria and how to end the country’s six-year civil war.But such hopes appeared optimistic as the diplomats outlined their sharply diverging views on Syria. Until the chemical attack, the Trump administration had sought to step back from the U.S. position that Assad should leave power. But Tillerson repeated the administration’s new belief that “the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end.”Tillerson said Syria’s government had committed more than 50 attacks using chlorine or other chemical weapons over the duration of the conflict. And he suggested that possible war crimes charges could be levied against the Syrian leader. Russia has never publicly acknowledged any such attacks by Assad’s forces and has tried for the past 18 months to help him expand his authority in Syria. The civil war is separate from the U.S.-led effort against the Islamic State group in the north of the country. While the most immediate U.S.-Russian dispute concerned culpability for the chemical weapons, broader disagreements over everything from Ukraine to Russia’s support for once-fringe candidates in European elections were among other sore points.Steeped in geopolitical intrigue, the meeting between Putin and Tillerson wasn’t formally confirmed until the last minute, following days of speculation about whether the Russian would refuse to grant the former oil executive an audience. Putin’s decision to host Tillerson signaled Moscow’s intent to maintain communication with the U.S. even as the countries bash each other publicly in louder and louder tones.Tillerson was greeted frostily in the Russian capital as Lavrov began their meeting Wednesday by demanding to know America’s “real intentions.”“We have seen very alarming actions recently with an unlawful attack against Syria,” Lavrov said, referring to the 59 Tomahawk missiles Trump launched at a Syrian air base to punish Assad for using chemical weapons. “We consider it of utmost importance to prevent the risks of replay of similar action in the future.”Trump and others have indeed threatened similar action. But in a Fox Business Network interview, the U.S. president said he wouldn’t intervene militarily against Assad unless the Syrian leader resorts to using weapons of mass destruction again. “Are we going to get involved with Syria? No,” Trump said. But, he added, “I see them using gas … we have to do something.”Only weeks ago, it appeared that Trump, who praised Putin throughout the U.S. election campaign, was poised for a potentially historic rapprochement with Russia. Any expectations of an easy rapport have crashed into reality amid the nasty back-and-forth over Syria and ongoing U.S. investigations into Russia’s activity connected to the U.S. presidential election.Allegations of collusion between Russian officials and Trump campaign associates also have weakened Trump’s ability to sweeten any offer for greater cooperation, such as by easing economic sanctions on Moscow related to its 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region and support for pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.last_img read more

first_img No peak in sight for evolving bacteria Explore further Escherichia coli. Credit: Rocky Mountain Laboratories, NIAID, NIH © 2015 Phys.org One of the foundations of evolution is that organisms change due to challenges they face in their environment, as new challenges arise, those adaptations that best suit the situation are favored, leading to an improvement in fitness. Some prior research has suggested that such adaptations would follow a hyperbolic curve—evidence from this long term effort, suggests that a power-law curve might be more accurate, at least in one such case. The LTEE began in 1988 when a team of researchers at the university, led by Richard Lenski, took a single sample of e. coli, separated it into 12 separate identical flasks held in identical environments and then watched and to see how they might evolve over the years. Periodically, samples have been removed and studied with some being put into deep freeze for later study. Over the past 27 years, the bacteria has produced thousands of new generations—one reached 50,000—offering the researchers a unique opportunity to see evolution in action. In comparing the current generations with the thousands that came before them, the team acknowledged that they fully expected that increases in fitness would level off, and perhaps stop altogether because of the unchanging environment in which they lived—there were no new challenges and all of the samples lived almost exactly the same way. The team did note that there were differences in degrees of sustained fitness among samples in the flasks, but they were minor. They also noticed that while the increases in fitness had slowed over the years, it did not appear to be on a course that would show it stopping at any point. Thus, they suggest it appears to follow more of a power-law curve than anything else. For that reason, the researchers have advised that the experiment continue, allowing future researchers to see if the bacteria will offer any other surprises. Citation: Long term study shows bacteria continue to show sustained fitness in unchanging environment (2015, December 16) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2015-12-term-bacteria-sustained-unchanging-environment.htmlcenter_img This document is subject to copyright. Sustained fitness gains and variability in fitness trajectories in the long-term evolution experiment with , Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences (2015). DOI: 10.1098/rspb.2015.2292AbstractMany populations live in environments subject to frequent biotic and abiotic changes. Nonetheless, it is interesting to ask whether an evolving population’s mean fitness can increase indefinitely, and potentially without any limit, even in a constant environment. A recent study showed that fitness trajectories of Escherichia coli populations over 50 000 generations were better described by a power-law model than by a hyperbolic model. According to the power-law model, the rate of fitness gain declines over time but fitness has no upper limit, whereas the hyperbolic model implies a hard limit. Here, we examine whether the previously estimated power-law model predicts the fitness trajectory for an additional 10 000 generations. To that end, we conducted more than 1100 new competitive fitness assays. Consistent with the previous study, the power-law model fits the new data better than the hyperbolic model. We also analysed the variability in fitness among populations, finding subtle, but significant, heterogeneity in mean fitness. Some, but not all, of this variation reflects differences in mutation rate that evolved over time. Taken together, our results imply that both adaptation and divergence can continue indefinitely—or at least for a long time—even in a constant environment. (Phys.org)—A team of researchers working on Michigan State University’s Long-Term Evolution Experiment (LTEE) has found that even after nearly thirty years living in an unchanging environment, generations of Escherichia coli continue to show improvements in fitness. In their paper published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the team describes the nature of their long term experiment and their surprise at the continual evolution of the simple bacteria. first_imgWhile strolling or running are beneficial for heart health, light physical activity, such as gardening and folding clothes, may also lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in older women, say researchers. The study showed that such activities might be enough to significantly reduce stroke or heart failure by up to 22 per cent and the risk of heart attack or coronary death by as much as 42 per cent. The association was strong across all racial and ethnic groups, noted the study published in the journal JAMA Network Open. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”The higher the amount of activity, the lower the risk,” said co-author Andrea LaCroix, Researcher at the University of California, San Diego. “And the risk reduction showed regardless of the women’s overall health status, functional ability or even age. In other words, the association with light physical activity was apparent regardless of these other factors,” LaCroix added. For the study, researchers studied nearly 6,000 women aged 63 to 97. They were made to wear a device which measured their movement 24 hours a day for seven consecutive days. The device was also calibrated by age to distinguish between light, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Most people do not think of folding clothes or walking to the mailbox as physical activity of any kind, the researchers said. “This study suggests that for older women, any and all movement counts towards better cardiovascular health.”last_img read more
