first_imgMarko Arnautovic struck twice as Stoke City stunned Manchester City to claim a deserved victory at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday lunchtime. The Potters began the day ten points behind the Premier League leaders but were superior from the start against their esteemed opponents and could have won by an even greater margin. Both goals came inside the opening 15 minutes, with City simply unable to cope with Stoke’s front three of Arnautovic, Bojan and Xherdan Shaqiri.Shaqiri was arguably the pick of the home side’s performers as he gave Aleksandar Kolarov a torrid afternoon and made his £12million fee look a real bargain. The tricky Swiss winger provided the opener on seven minutes, leaving four City players in his wake before crossing for Arnautovic to score. And Shaqiri was again the architect as Stoke doubled their lead with only 15 minutes on the clock.Finding space deep in City’s half, he played a delightful pass into the path of Arnautovic, who slide home his – and Stoke’s – second of the afternoon. It was a stunning start to the game by Mark Hughes’ men and they could have extended their lead before the half-time whistle blew.Arnautovic’s movement was too much for Martin Demichelis and Nicolas Otamendi and the Austrian missed a glorious chance to grab his hat-trick, beating Hart with a well-struck drive but unable to beat the post.Otamendi and Wilfried Bony exchanged angry words as City, missing Vincent Kompany, Yaya Toure and Sergio Aguero through injury, searched for a route back into the game. But City hadn’t come from two goals down to win in a decade and they never looked like doing so at the Britannia as Raheem Sterling, Kevin de Bruyne and the fit-again David Silva all struggled to exert any influence on proceedings. It almost got worse for City after the break as Shaqiri just failed to get a touch on Arnautovic’s centre after a great flick from Bojan had cut open the City defence. But it mattered little for the home side, as they closed out a comfortable victory to move up to ninth in the table and deal City’s title ambitions a severe blow. 1last_img read more
