first_imgStory Highlights Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck, has warned that delinquent drivers may soon be required to clear outstanding traffic tickets before they are able to renew their driver’s licence.“The system is not working, and we have to find an alternative way, and we are going to find it, because all those tickets have to be paid,” he said.“ I am proposing… that all of those warrants, all of those unpaid tickets will be put against the driver’s licence of those individuals and be put against the vehicle that was being driven, so when that vehicle comes to be renewed, [it] can’t be renewed until the driver pays the fine,” Minister Chuck said.“We want to put in place those provisions, so those persons who feel they can collect tickets like confetti, must know that their day of reckoning is at hand,” he added.Emphasising the problem of unpaid traffic tickets, Minister Chuck noted that at the Kingston Traffic Court alone, 65,000 persons did not pay for the first six months of this year. He argued that with unpaid tickets sent to the courts after 30 days, that amounts to about 10,000 per month.“That’s about 500 warrants on average being issued every day,” Minister Chuck lamented. He pledged that “we are going to collect every single one. If you don’t think you breached the law, go fight it in court, but you can’t just ignore the law like that”.Minister Chuck pointed out that there have been three moratoriums to allow for persons with outstanding traffic tickets to pay, and there are no plans to have another. He is encouraging motorists with outstanding tickets to call the traffic headquarters at the Elleston Road Police Station. “They have data of every ticket that has not been paid,” he indicated.Minister Chuck was speaking at a Justice of the Peace (JP) training session at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes, Clarendon, on Thursday (October 18).The session was held to hear the concerns of the JP and assist them with providing solutions for issues they face while they serve citizens. first_imgFORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – A special air quality statement that was issued by Environment Canada last Wednesday because of a large amount of smoke in the air remains in effect for all of Northeast B.C. today.Last week, officials with the Ministry of Environment said that at this point, it’s not entirely known where the smoke is coming from.Air quality meteorologist Ralph Adams said that the smoke isn’t coming from any local fires in Northeast B.C., but could possibly be coming from fires burning in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, and even as far away as Scandinavia and Siberia. “The view at the moment is that it’s likely coming from there. It’s likely that this smoke is coming from Eurasia, but at this point, there’s no agreement.” A map of the current fire danger rating in B.C. Photo by BC Wildfire Service. A map of the current fire danger rating in B.C. Photo by BC Wildfire Service. A map of all active wildfires on the BC Wildfire Service website shows that no new major fires have erupted in the B.C. Peace and Fort Nelson regions, where the fire danger rating is currently between very low and moderate.Of the fires that have started in Northeast B.C. recently, most are either in unpopulated areas or are less than ten hectares in size.People with pre-existing health conditions, the elderly, infants, children and sensitive individuals are more likely to experience health effects.Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk. Stay inside if you have breathing difficulties. Find an indoor place that’s cool and ventilated. Using an air conditioner that cools and filters air may help. If you open the windows you may let in more polluted air. If your home isn’t air-conditioned, consider going to a public place (library, shopping mall, recreation centre) that is air-conditioned.Be air aware! Check your local weather forecasts and alerts so you know when to take extra care. For more information on current air quality, see: www.bcairquality.ca.Visit www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHI values.last_img read more

NEW YORK (AP) — As the 100th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s birth approached, Sharon Robinson is sure her father would have a lot to say about the current political climate in the United States if he were still alive.“I know he would be outraged,” she said.In this Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 photo, news articles about Brooklyn Dodgers baseball player Jackie Robinson are displayed at the exhibit “In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson: (AP Photo/Seth Wenig)Jackie Robinson, who died at age 53 in 1972, would have turned 100 on Thursday. He broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, and the centennial of his birth marks the opening of an exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York titled “In the Dugout with Jackie Robinson: An Intimate Portrait of a Baseball Legend.”It features memorabilia and 32 photographs originally shot for Look magazine, plus footage of Robinson hitting grounders to his son in the backyard of the family house in Stamford, Connecticut. Many of the photos shot by Frank Bauman and Kenneth Eide from 1949 and 1953 had not been on public view previously.Rachel Robinson, the ballplayer’s wife, planned to attend the opening, still a force at age 96. The celebration and baseball’s annual Jackie Robinson Day on April 15 will focus attention on the Jackie Robinson Museum in the SoHo section of Manhattan, scheduled to open in December.Della Britton Baeza, CEO of the Jackie Robinson Foundation, said $28 million has been raised toward a $42 million goal — matching Robinson’s uniform number, which was retired throughout the major leagues in 1997. The money raised covers construction costs, and an additional $4 million is needed for marketing and staff. The overall goal includes $10 million for an endowment, she said.“In this day and age in this climate of our country, we really are going to take on this issue of discussing race relations,” Britton Baeza said. “What better place than a place that pays tribute to one of the great integrationists of the last century? So we’re going to roll up our sleeves. We will do it from a position of goodwill and from a position of starting with the facts, if you will, but we’re going to take these things on and talk about activism in sports.”The exhibit, which runs until Sept. 15, is a partnership between the Museum of the City of New York and the foundation, and some of the memorabilia will wind up at the Jackie Robinson Museum.Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred has been a major backer of the Jackie Robinson Foundation and the museum, and he will be honored at the foundation’s annual awards dinner on March 4 along with businessman Maverick Carter and musician Kristopher Bowers.“The centennial of his birth is an opportunity for MLB to recognize the historical significance of Jackie Robinson and to continue to teach younger people the impact he had on baseball and society,” Manfred said.Sharon Robinson, MLB’s education programming consultant, said today’s players need to have greater knowledge of the foundation’s efforts.“There was a shift in their awareness with the movie ’42,’” she said of the 2013 film that starred Chadwick Boseman as Robinson and Harrison Ford as Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey. “A number of players came up to me or coaches and said, ‘I thought I knew the story but now I get it.’ There’s no time better than now because this country needs healing, needs to continue to move forward in terms of not just dealing with racism but sexism and the whole gamut of isms. So there’s no better time to look back into history and see how much has changed but how much work still needs to be done.”___ read more

It’s Monday, and that means it’s time for another edition of FiveThirtyEight’s NBA Power Ratings. The least you need to know about how these numbers work: Each team is ranked according to a projection of its strength over the upcoming week — and the upcoming week only — using Real Plus-Minus (RPM) player ratings provided by Jeremias Engelmann and Steve Ilardi. For more details on the ratings, see our introductory rankings post.(Note: These ratings were calculated before news broke that Chicago’s Jimmy Butler would miss three to six weeks with an elbow injury. Butler carried a strong +3.2 RPM rating, so replacing his 26 minutes per game with a replacement-level player would drop the Bulls from 11th place to a tie for 19th with the Pistons. Chicago’s saving grace might be that the average player below Butler on the team’s depth chart is significantly better than replacement level, but there’s no doubt that this news reduces the Bulls’ rating.)Some observations about the rankings this week:The Oklahoma City Thunder climbed more in the rankings from last week than any other team, leaping from No. 13 to No. 6. The biggest reason? The expectation that Kevin Durant will return in some capacity this week, even if in reduced minutes, was worth 1.7 points per 100 possessions to OKC’s overall rating. The ripple effects of Durant’s return extend beyond his own increased minutes. Our playing-time projections also see Dion Waiters (whose extremely negative RPM falls below the replacement level) getting fewer minutes on the wing — a boon of 0.8 points/100 to the Thunder’s rating. More minutes may also go to plus-minus darling Andre Roberson,1Relative to other metrics at least; from his awful 9.9 Player Efficiency Rating (PER), you wouldn’t expect his RPM to be a strong +2.4. and fewer minutes will go to guard D.J. Augustin, an additional 0.6 point boost for OKC’s rating. The mix of very good and very poor players on the Thunder roster makes the team a great case study in how much effect playing-time reshuffling can have on a team’s overall talent rating. The Atlanta Hawks dropped four spots in this week’s rankings, largely because Al Horford (+2.3 RPM rating), Jeff Teague (+1.3), DeMarre Carroll (+1.2) and Pero Antic (+0.8) are all listed as day-to-day in the team’s injury report. Those slight playing-time downgrades gave more minutes to a host of negative RPM players; chief among them are Dennis Schroder and Kent Bazemore.Joining the Hawks with a four-slot decline this week are the Toronto Raptors. More than half of Toronto’s 1.8 point ratings drop is driven by an injury to Kyle Lowry — and the resulting uptick in playing time for the man behind him on the team’s point guard depth chart, Lou Williams. Williams’s box-score numbers are very good, and Toronto has played much better with him on the court this season. But Real Plus-Minus isn’t convinced despite his great 2014-15 season to date. His long-term predictive RPM is currently -1.9 — with a -3.6 defensive mark — numbers only slightly improved from his -2.0/-3.7 ratings from the end of last season. For all the changes just outside the league’s top tier — in addition to the rise of OKC and declines of Atlanta and Toronto, the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets both moved up a pair of spots — the top four in our rankings stayed constant. This marks the first time that’s been true since we introduced the rankings in mid-January.With Oklahoma City’s gains, the Western Conference playoff picture is all but set. Seven teams have postseason probabilities in excess of 97 percent, and the Thunder don’t sit too far behind, at 92.7 percent. As for the East, it boasts six teams with playoff odds of 99.6 percent or greater, although there’s some drama to be had with six teams battling for the conference’s final two playoff berths. The Indiana Pacers have the inside track for one of the slots, with a 62.7 percent playoff probability, but none of the five teams behind them are any more than 40.2 percent likely to qualify, which ought to bring at least some tension to the final month and a half of the season.Related to the previous point, it’s worth mentioning that the Utah Jazz have a zero percent probability of making the playoffs despite ranking 12th in talent. What happened? Utah’s record has undershot its Pythagorean expectation by three wins, but the team has also improved its talent rating recently (granted, by too little and too late) by jettisoning Enes Kanter and his -2.5 RPM in a three-team trade with Oklahoma City and the Detroit Pistons. Finally, who on earth is Joffrey Lauvergne? Our projections had the French big man down for 2.8 minutes per game for the Denver Nuggets last week, but he ended up averaging 21 minutes per game instead (and even got a starting nod against the Jazz on Friday). Denver might be toning down Lauvergne’s playing time after he shot 38 percent from the floor and posted a -36 plus-minus in that lone start, but his expected role increase — and -4.4 RPM rating — is still enough to help the Nuggets drop by five slots in the rankings. They’re still not New York Knicks bad, but after their mass talent exodus at the trade deadline, the Nuggets now bring up the rear of the non-Knicks/Philadelphia 76ers division of the power rankings. read more

Ohio State senior defensive end Jalyn Holmes (11) is escorted off the field in the third quarter against Nebraska in Memorial Stadium on Oct. 14. Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorInjuries go hand in hand with athletics. Athletes in all sports have to constantly manage them, even if not recovering from injuries, taking the necessary steps to prevent injuries from taking place. Therefore, in order to fully understand sports at Ohio State, it is important to consider the health of the athletes and the people in charge of ensuring an athlete’s safety. Athletic trainers are an ostensibly underappreciated yet critical component to the Ohio State Department of Athletics.Currently, Ohio State staffs approximately 19 athletic trainers, eight interns and two physical therapists. There are also 10 team physicians, four sports medicine fellows, four nutritionists,  several sports psychologists, a dentist and a pharmacist, all of whom collaborate with the athletic trainers. Throughout each season for the sports, an athletic trainer will constantly need to be on site, whether it be at practice or during a game, to be there should something go wrong. Katie Walker, an athletic trainer who specializes in tennis and women’s soccer, stressed just how different the experience is for every trainer based on the injury-risk of the sport.“Soccer, obviously, is a higher-risk sport, from an acute contact injury standpoint,” Walker said. “So with soccer I’m really dialed into what’s going on in the play; people going up for headers, sliding into people.” Walker added that keying in and evaluating an athlete’s current condition while simultaneously judging how an injury impacts the athlete’s play is a necessary skill for an athletic trainer. For example, tennis players would be assessed on their form and their swinging technique in order to see how an injury might be affecting performance. In fact, the process of guiding an athlete through an injury is one of the primary  responsibilities  for any athletic trainer.“Once you start to know your athletes and know their personalities and have treated them through so many injuries, it just becomes fun to watch people you know and to watch people who you helped get back on the court or back on the soccer field,” Walker said. “And that’s really where the enjoyment for athletic training comes from.”Walker said there are multiple steps to addressing an injury during a game. The first action the protocol calls for is evaluating if the injury is major or is a high-risk type of injury. If the injured player is physically capable of moving himself or herself to the sideline, the trainer will move the athlete to the sideline and further evaluate the injury with the available team physician. Treatment such as ice or taping then might be applied on the field to reduce recovery time. After the game, more in-depth treatment like crutches or walking boots would be applied in the athletic training facilities. Documentation is the final step, as all athletic trainers must report any sort of injury into their computer medical database. Preventing injuries is another key component to an athletic trainer’s arsenal. The term “prehab” is used among athletic trainers  to describe preventing future injuries with players who are currently rehabbing. Walker said prehab consists of working with strength and conditioning coaches to incorporate exercises that focus on building muscle in areas with high-risk injuries, such as ACLs and shoulders. Athletic training also relies heavily on being updated with equipment and technology. Like any medical field, having the best techniques and technology allows for quicker recovery and eases an athletic trainer’s job.Women’s soccer uses Polar Team Pro heart rate and GPS monitors in order to track cardiovascular and muscle stress.  Another technology utilized is Omegawave, which is a system of electrodes that calculate changes in heart rate, which aids with recovery. Omegawave can also highlight any cardiovascular discrepancies that might impact an athlete’s ability to play.Other techniques and equipment are vastly improving and the idea of unique improvements to the athletic training field is being constantly recognized every year. The concept of athletic training is much more than simply concussion protocols and taping ankles. Although they might not be starring in any of the hype videos or postgame interviews, the athletic training staff are essential for keeping Ohio State’s athletes continually performing at high levels. read more

first_imgLast year, in partnership with Stratton Publishing & Marketing, the Angerosa Research Foundation reported that 85 percent of associations published at least one e-newsletter, with 67 percent publishing more than one. Despite e-newsletter production growth, a number of association publishers—including American School Board Journal editor-in-chief Glenn Cook—consider high-security spam filters to be directly impacting open-rates, and in turn, readership. For Carole Hayward, director of newsletters and special publications for educational association ASCD, those spam filters, which are used by a number of schools, make it challenging to deliver news to members. ASCD uses a third-party media service to send one of its e-newsletters, “but even they can’t solve the problem entirely,” said Hayward. While the best solution is spam-checking e-newsletters before sending them to readers, there are other ways to get past the filters: Break Up the List When sending e-news to members, “try breaking the recipients into several groups and sending out the same e-mail under a slightly different subject line,” said ASBJ publications coordinator Margaret Suslick. Shorten Subject Lines“Our subject lines are short,” said Cook. One of its highest e-alert open rates, he said, was for the four-word subject line “A Day to Remember.”Appealing Subjects Are Likely Targets“I’ve found that trying to offer members ‘free’ anything via e-mail is a great way to end up in the spam folder,” said Hayward. Words like “dollar,” “free,” and “savings” are all culprits when it comes to marking e-newsletters as junk mail. Hayward said subject lines like “Top 10 Tips” tend to bypass spam filters and appeal to members.Send Links, Not SurveysASBJ sends its reader panel survey via a link in its e-newsletter instead of embedding the survey, giving its digital offerings additional protection from spam filters.last_img read more

first_img Now playing: Watch this: Share your voice 2 Comments The world’s fastest wireless data network is coming soon to the world’s fastest city. In 2018, New York City asked three companies—Neutral Connect Networks, Fiberless Networks, and Edge Fibernet—to experiment with 5G on Governors Island Park. Over months of testing a diverse spectrum of technologies, city officials have learned that deploying 5G will be challenging, but the benefits are significant. 5G Here’s how New York City is testing 5G 3:43 Tags Internet The 5G test is a part of the city’s NYCx moonshot challenge program that began in late-2017 and ran through much of 2018. The initiative encourages collaboration between public officials, technology firms, academics and nonprofits. Governors Island Park is situated on a small island between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The island’s rolling hills and historic monuments make it an ideal testing ground for next-gen wireless tech, said Jeremy Goldberg, the city’s deputy CTO and the managing director of NYCx.The NYCx team looked at Governors Island to learn about the constraints of connectivity, and as a testbed for several use cases, said Goldberg. To understand how 5G could benefit New Yorkers the city wanted to stress- test the network, clock upload and download speeds, and tally the number of people that can access the network at any given point and time. The 5G challenge is part of the city’s broader digital transformation strategy designed to encourage “growth, equity, sustainability, and resilience,” said Goldberg. The CTO’s department is focused on keeping all New Yorkers at the center of technology. He emphasized that to reach its “transformative” potential 5G needs to be affordable, accessible and practical for all New Yorkers. City officials hope the NYCx connectivity challenge will encourage entrepreneurship and serve as “a model for learning and for insights not just for the city’s purposes … but for entrepreneurs, for academics, for nonprofits and others that are developing really unique AR and VR applications, internet of things solutions, smart sensing and other [technologies].”last_img read more

first_imgMap of Yemen locating Hodeida where at least 150 people have been killed in 24 hours of clashes, medics said Monday. Photo: AFPAt least 150 people have been killed in 24 hours of clashes in the Yemeni port city of Hodeida, medics said Monday, as Britain’s top diplomat visited the Gulf seeking to boost international calls for a ceasefire.Government loyalists supported by a Saudi-led coalition are fighting to oust the Iran-backed Huthi rebels from the strategic Red Sea city, whose docks are a lifeline to 14 million Yemenis at risk of starvation.Asked about the possibility of a ceasefire, a coalition spokesman told reporters in Riyadh that “the operation is still ongoing”, adding that it was meant to pressure the rebels to come to the negotiating table.A Hodeida resident reported an ebb in fighting around the city by Monday evening, but UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of a possible “catastrophic situation” if the port is destroyed.”The fighting must stop, a political debate must begin, and we must prepare a massive humanitarian response to avoid the worst next year,” he said.A military source in the pro-government coalition said the insurgents had pushed back a large-scale assault aimed at moving towards the port, under rebel control since 2014.In a statement sent via the Telegram messaging app, the Huthis said they had “lured” loyalists up the western coastline of Hodeida, where the rebels then launched an attack on the troops.Government forces, led on the ground by Emirati-backed troops, have made their way into Hodeida after 11 days of clashes, reaching residential neighbourhoods in the east on Sunday and sparking fears of street fights that would further endanger civilians trapped in the city.Residents and government military sources have reported rebel snipers stationed on rooftops in civilian streets in eastern Hodeida, a few kilometres (miles) from the port on the western edge of the city. The fighting forced hundreds of terrified medical workers and patients to flee the al-Thawra hospital — Hodeida’s largest public medical facility — as a series of explosions rocked the area on Sunday, Amnesty International said.A medical worker told Amnesty that they “dodged a hail of shrapnel” as bombardment near the hospital lasted more than 30 minutes.Enough is enoughThe Hodeida offensive has sparked an international outcry unprecedented in nearly four years of conflict between the Huthis and the Saudi-backed government.Britain, the United States and France have all called for an end to hostilities. All three countries are major suppliers of arms to Saudi Arabia.US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has urged Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a major ally of Washington, to engage in peace talks.British foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt met with Saudi King Salman and Prince Mohammed on Monday during a visit to the kingdom to press its rulers to support UN efforts to end the conflict.Hunt also flew to the United Arab Emirates, a key pillar of the Saudi-led coalition, to meet the crown prince of Abu Dhabi. In France, foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said it was time “the international community said enough is enough.”There will be no victor in this war,” Le Drian told France 2 TV.Civilian tollAid groups fear for the safety of hundreds of thousands of people living in Hodeida — and for millions of others dependent on its port for what little food and humanitarian aid trickle into impoverished, blockaded Yemen.A military official in Hodeida on Monday confirmed seven civilians had died, without giving further details.A 15-year-old boy died last week of shrapnel wounds in Hodeida, Save the Children said.Medics in hospitals across Hodeida province reported 111 rebels and 32 loyalist fighters killed overnight, according to a tally by AFP.Sources at the Al-Alfi military hospital, seized by the rebels during their 2014 takeover, said charred body parts had been delivered there overnight. Military sources confirmed that the Saudi-led alliance had targeted the rebels with multiple air strikes. The rebels have begun to evacuate their wounded to Sanaa, the capital, which the Huthis seized during a 2014 takeover that included a string of ports on Yemen’s coastline.Saudi Arabia and its allies intervened in the Yemeni government’s fight against the Huthis in 2015, triggering what the UN now calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.Nearly 600 people have been killed since clashes erupted in Hodeida on November 1, ending a temporary suspension in a government offensive to take the city that began in June.Diplomatic pressureThe coalition has come under intense international pressure to end the conflict, particularly following the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, an ardent critic of Prince Mohammed, in his country’s consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.Multiple countries, including Germany and Norway, have announced the suspension of arms sales to Saudi Arabia after Khashoggi’s killing. The United Nations’ Yemen envoy, Martin Griffiths, is pushing for peace talks between the Huthis and the government by the end of the year. The United States, which for years provided military training and aerial refuelling for the Saudi-led coalition, on Saturday announced it would end its inflight refuelling support for the alliance. The alliance accuses Iran of smuggling arms to the Huthis through Hodeida port. first_imgAFRAM (formerly known as the African American Heritage Festival) is back.  This family-friendly event is a celebration of African-American life, music, and culture. This event will feature entertainment, children’s activities, arts, history, education, financial literacy, employment and job training opportunities. The AFRAM festival will take place Aug. 12 at The Bowl in Druid Hill Park. This year’s event has been significantly scaled back. In previous years, the free festival ran for two days in the parking lots between M&T Bank Stadium and Camden Yards with national artists such as Brandy, Chrisette Michelle, and Common headlining the festival which greeted over 35,000 revelers each summer. Mayor Catherine Pugh believes that scaling back the largest ethnic festival on the East Coast will help it return to its “original focus.”“Our hope is to restore the AFRAM Festival over time to its original core value of being the family-oriented, community resource event known for its good food, home-grown talent and wealth of information,” Pugh stated in a press release. This year’s one-day festival will include musical entertainment by local rappers YBS Skola and Tate Kobang. It will also include an Innovation Station for children. first_imgIn This Issue. * Draghi tells Greece to allow TROIKA in. * Faber says China to back renminbi with Gold! * Yen set for next leg down? * S$ gets caught up in yen weakness. And Now. Today’s A Pfennig For Your Thoughts. Phase 2 Of The Dollar’s Moon Shot. Good day.. And a Tom Terrific Tuesday to you! Uriah Heep and their song July Morning greets me this morning. It starts out soft and ends heavy duty, sort of like most of my mornings! Yesterday, never did get around to ending heavy duty, ending with a whimper, instead.  But today is a new day, new beginnings and all that, so I’ve got that going for me, eh? The dollar is not having anything to do with soft beginnings. The dollar went on a moon shot ride after the Jobs report on Friday and hasn’t looked back!  Even the currencies like rubles, and real that currently pay high interest rates are getting whacked. But think about this for a minute. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating. IF and when the Fed does hike rates 25 Basis Points to bring their Fed Funds rate to .75%, the ruble will still have more than 16% in a positive differential, and the real will have more than $12% in a positive differential. How can 25 Basis Points be that big of a deal to these two?  Sure the 25 Basis Points rate hike does open Pandora’s Box of additional rate hikes, but for now this is where we are, and to me, that’s still a BIG IF the Fed hikes rates in June.  You know, the markets may be backing the Fed into a corner though. Yes, the markets could have positioned everything so dependent on a rate hike that the Fed will have no choice but to hike rates in June. I don’t think we’re there yet, but as long as the stock market doesn’t fall completely out of bed, and the 10-year Treasury doesn’t rise to 3%, things should hold for the Fed to back out of a rate hike in June, which I still believe they will do, at this point. Gold has also been whacked during this mission to the moon by the dollar, so there’s nothing out there folks, that even looks like it could buck this moon shot by the dollar. What’s an investor to do? Well, you could go to cash, but until rates really begin to run higher, banks are going to be slow to raise the deposit rates. Or at least that’s been their MO since the beginning of banking! But bonds are losing value, stocks are losing value, currencies are losing value and precious metals are losing value. YIKES! When you put that way, Chuck, deposit rates don’t sound all that bad. While you’re looking for deposit rates that appeal to you, don’t forget that EverBank has a yield pledge to remain in the Top 5% of Competitive Accounts. That way you don’t have to go “yield hopping”. for details see: https://everbank.com/banking/money-market OK. The Big News on the news wires this morning is that the Greeks have agreed to allow the TROIKA back into Greece to begin talks. Remember the TROIKA is the IMF, the European Central Bank (ECB), and the European Commission. Seems there was some confusion on the Greeks’ willingness to allow the TROIKA back into Greece, but when cornered the Greek PM said it was all a misunderstanding. Sure it was. I’m sure there was some political saber rattling going on there ahead of the meeting, which was going to take place all the time. Besides the selling in the euro from dollar buying, this Greek thing just continues to weigh on the euro.  The Eurozone needs to go on a diet, and drop 50 pounds, so they can be like Marie Osmond and say, “I’m Marie and I lost 50 pounds!”  Of course I’m saying that the 50 pounds in the Eurozone’s case would be Greece. Unfortunately for the Eurozone, that’s not going to happen, and so they need to just convince themselves that they need to go to the Big & Tall store. HA! Well, my currency of the month article that was in the Sunday Pfennig this past Sunday, didn’t get as many responses as the article on the pound the previous month. Although it did produce a quote that appeared on Google+ yesterday!  You know, the Indian rupee, the Currency of the Month, has the improving fundamentals  and good interest rate differential to dollars, euros, sterling and yen. But it has to prove it can maintain these fundamentals and that they aren’t just some flash in the pan stuff that India is known for. I highlight the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Rajan, and the PM Modi in the article and point out that even though they have done some wonderful things so far, the best thing to happen to India in a long time is the drop in the price of Oil. A dear reader did ask that the next Currency of the Month be the Singapore dollar (S$). Well, I can do that right here! The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is Singapore’s Central Bank, and they decide the direction of the S$ by either widening or narrowing the trading band that the S$ can trade within. The MAS if famous for using the S$ to combat or promote inflation, and not interest rates like the rest of the world. Well, the MAS will meet in about a month, and while the markets may be looking at the MAS to widen the trading band, which would, at this point in the proceedings bring about more S$ weakness, but I’m going to go out on a limb here, no worries, I picked out a big strong limb to hold me, and say that the MAS will leave the trading band unchanged, but at their previous meeting to the one next month, the MAS indicated they were OK with S$ weakness, and in that time the S$ has dropped in value VS the dollar. Singapore is foremost an Asian export country, and the disease that the Japanese yen began spreading across Asia in the last two years, really took hold of the S$ in the past 6 months. Recall, I said back then that I feared what Japan had decided to do, which was really weaken the yen further, would eventually spill over to the rest of Asia, due to the fact that these Asian countries can’t let one country’s currency get out of whack while others remain strong, because of the competition for exports. Speaking of Japan. the yen just continues down the path of weak currencies that it began almost 2 years ago now..   The yen is within spitting distance of 122. We haven’t seen 122 in yen since 2007.  And before that 2002.. PM Abe, is still preaching about ending deflation and reviving the economy, so far his 3 arrows have missed the mark, and the economy is still in Neverland. Nevereconomy, nevercurrency strength, neverinflation. that’s where Japan is. And now that the markets believe there are no geopolitical problems out there ( I guess they are turning a blind eye toward ISIS, or the Chinese island grabbing in the S. Pacific, the Middle East tinderbox and more) they have taken that safe haven status from the yen. I look for yen to trade between 125 and 130 by the end of this year, and PM Abe will finally see what his economic reforms will do with a very weak yen. Aussie and N.Z. dollars (A$ and kiwi) are getting whacked, for the narrowing interest rate differential too. At least their respective differentials are smaller compared to rubles, real and rand.. There was a BIG scare in N.Z regarding their infant formula sector. There were rumors flying around that a poison was slipped into the formula.. And this has added to the kiwi weakness this morning. Dairy, wool and lumber, in New Zealand, folks. that’s the exports in a nutshell, so any problem with production of one of three is a BIG problem for New Zealand and kiwi. Once again, I ask the question, how long will it be before the sanctions on Russia are lifted? The sooner the better in my opinion, as the Russian and Eurozone economy is suffering due to the sanctions. Come on everyone let’s get going on this! As if the Brazilian real needed anything else to add to its misery, it does now. Brazilian Supreme Court ruled this past weekend that congressional members can be investigated, as there were challenges to one Senator for his involvement into Petroleo Brazil, BUT said that President Rousseff could not be investigated. And that’s who the investigators wanted!  So, political wrangling is causing the real some down to earth problems right now. The real has traded to a 2004 low this morning. YIKES! Tonight in China, both Zhous, Zhou Qiang, head of the Supreme People’s Court, and Zhou Xiaochuan, Gov. of the Peoples Bank of China (PBOC) will speak that the Chinese NPC. I expect to read quite a few good quotes from these two. That is if they get printed! China is still a Communist country, and although they’ve probably become more capitalistic that most capitalistic countries, deep down they are still Communist. which means they don’t have to print everything these guys say if they don’t want to, and nobody can make them! The renminbi / yuan ‘s trading has been reflective of the slowing down of the Chinese domestic economy. We saw yesterday that Chinese exports are attempting to pick up the slack from the domestic economy, but so far that’s not happened. Did you see that the well-respected analyst/ investor, Marc Faber said that  he believes that China is going to switch to a Gold backed currency, and that they will be able to do this because they have accumulated so much Gold, and that the markets don’t understand how much Gold the Chinese have accumulated.  That’s pretty cool, because that’s the same stuff I’ve been telling you for 4 years!  Shoot Rudy, maybe even 5 years. but I’ll stick with 4 for sure! The U.S. Data Cupboard only has the Wholesale Inventories for January to print today.  Tomorrow will be another day of nothing for the cupboard, but then on Thursday, we finally get back to real data, as Feb Retail Sales will print. You may recall that January’s Retail Sales fell -.8%, so it will be interesting to see if February can play catch up here. The BHI was very active in January, and that would indicate a recovery of sorts for Retail Sales..  Thursday I’ll be in St. Pete, but I’m sure I’ll remind you of this, and what the BHI indicates. Oh, and a dear reader sent me this email regarding my rant on the Jobs data yesterday: “of course the job creation # is true. There were thousands of kids out shoveling snow for $2. the Gov’t would never lie.”  HAHAHAHAHA! For What It’s Worth. It was fun seeing the guys at the DR. (Daily Reckoning www.darilyreckoning.com )  picked up some of the stuff I said about the jobs data in yesterday’s Pfennig, for the DR yesterday afternoon.  I always get a kick out of seeing my name up in the lights!   OK for today’s FWIW, I have a little ditty about the BRICS Development Bank and you can read the entire article here: http://rt.com/news/238981-putin-signs-brics-bank/ “Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law ratifying the deal establishing the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), according to a document published on Monday on Russia’s official website for legal information. The BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) was set up to challenge two major Western-led giants – the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. NDB’s key role will be to serve as a pool of currency for infrastructure projects within a group of five countries with major emerging national economies – Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa. According to the Russian Finance Ministry, the New Development Bank is expected to start functioning fully by the end of the year, with the headquarters slated for opening in Shanghai. The chairmanship, with a term of five years, will rotate among the members.” Chuck again.. yes, this and more for the BRICS Development Bank (BDB)  as the Emerging Markets countries will now have an alternative source of funds in which to borrow going forward, and without the strings attached that the IMF and World Bank uses. this is one of the key reasons I put together the BRICS MarketSafe CD last year.  To recap. the dollar is still on its moon shot and hasn’t looked back since the jobs report on Friday morning. Even the “real positive interest rate differential currencies” of Russia and Brazil are getting sold, even though as Chuck points out, their positive rate differential will still be quite significant IF the Fed does hike rates in June. Gold gets whacked again, but Marc Faber says China is going to back the renminbi with Gold, something Chuck has told you for 4 years now.The Brazilian real is trading at a 2004 low, the euro is trading at a 2003 low, and so on, as currencies are all down since Friday. Currencies today 3/10/15. American Style: A$ .7635, kiwi .7280, C$ .7905, euro 1.0760, sterling 1.5070, Swiss $1.0070, . Well, I’ll be writing tomorrow from home base, then hitting the road for a 4 hour drive to the west side of the state. I really need to get to work on my presentation for the Conference. The first time the Butlers went to spring training, the Cardinals trained in St. Pete, at Al Lang field. It was even more cozy than their current home in Jupiter, Roger Dean Stadium. It has been standing room-packed the last two games, and all seats are sold the rest of March. My spring get-away has turned into ever Cardinals fan’s spring get-away! The rash that affected my hands two weeks ago, is back, and worse this time! UGH! We can’t figure out what’s causing this to happen. No biggie, just a stupid allergic reaction to something. The Red Sox brought their 2nd team players to town yesterday and still beat the Cardinals, as the Cardinals proved once again that they are too “left handed”.  Throw a senior citizen left handed pitcher out on the mound and he’ll beat the Cardinals! With one exception, you’ll have to ask Clayton Kershaw about that from the past two post seasons. The Blue Jays are playing their song: Maybe, on the iPod right now. This is from the Blue Jays only album, and features two Moody Blues members, Justin Hayward and John Lodge.  OK.. time to go. I hope you have a Tom Terrific Tuesday!Chuck Butler Managing Director EverBank Global Marketslast_img read more
