Sky’s the limit for McLeod – Graham

first_img PROBLEMS McLeod has recently run 9.99 seconds for the 100 metres, but Graham doesn’t believe the accelerated velocity will create problems. “All he has to do is fix his leg sometimes by not hitting the hurdle,” he suggested. “Once he’s clean, we’re going to see something fantastic soon, before even Rio”, Graham said, using hurdling terminology to describe a race when the athlete isn’t slowed down by contact with any of the 10 obstacles. More broadly, the experienced coach thinks that McLeod and Parchment could both win medals in the 110-metre hurdles at the Olympics. “Once Parchment gets his start, we could see Jamaica creating history – a quinela,” he predicted. “With Omar’s early speed, once Parchment gets his start, Jamaica is in for some good times in the hurdles,” he concluded. The early-season form of Omar McLeod has one of his former high-school coaches thinking about the world record. Raymond Graham, who coached McLeod in 2013 at Kingston College (KC), says McLeod’s early speed will help chase Aries Merritt’s four-year-old 110-metre hurdles record of 12.80 seconds. Graham also believes that McLeod and Hansle Parchment could make hurdling history for Jamaica at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Graham isn’t surprised by his former student’s early-season run of 13.08 seconds at the Drake Relays last weekend. “He is the first hurdler I’ve seen with so much speed, and when you have speed,” he explained, “you’re going to run fast”. The long-time coach believes McLeod was unlucky to hit the hurdles in last year’s World Championship final and said: “I think he will break the world record soon.” McLeod ran 12.97 seconds to beat Parchment, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, to win last year’s National Senior Championships. However, he struggled in the World Championships final where he placed sixth. Parchment peaked well at the Worlds to be runner-up to Russia’s Sergey Shubenkov. Graham isn’t the first to project world-record potential for McLeod. Just after McLeod’s Nationals wins, 1966 CAC silver medallist Ray Harvey said: “His form is immaculate, impeccable, but his speed is what really, I think, could propel him probably close to the world record.”last_img read more

first_imgStory Highlights Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck, has warned that delinquent drivers may soon be required to clear outstanding traffic tickets before they are able to renew their driver’s licence.“The system is not working, and we have to find an alternative way, and we are going to find it, because all those tickets have to be paid,” he said.“ I am proposing… that all of those warrants, all of those unpaid tickets will be put against the driver’s licence of those individuals and be put against the vehicle that was being driven, so when that vehicle comes to be renewed, [it] can’t be renewed until the driver pays the fine,” Minister Chuck said.“We want to put in place those provisions, so those persons who feel they can collect tickets like confetti, must know that their day of reckoning is at hand,” he added.Emphasising the problem of unpaid traffic tickets, Minister Chuck noted that at the Kingston Traffic Court alone, 65,000 persons did not pay for the first six months of this year. He argued that with unpaid tickets sent to the courts after 30 days, that amounts to about 10,000 per month.“That’s about 500 warrants on average being issued every day,” Minister Chuck lamented. He pledged that “we are going to collect every single one. If you don’t think you breached the law, go fight it in court, but you can’t just ignore the law like that”.Minister Chuck pointed out that there have been three moratoriums to allow for persons with outstanding traffic tickets to pay, and there are no plans to have another. He is encouraging motorists with outstanding tickets to call the traffic headquarters at the Elleston Road Police Station. “They have data of every ticket that has not been paid,” he indicated.Minister Chuck was speaking at a Justice of the Peace (JP) training session at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes, Clarendon, on Thursday (October 18).The session was held to hear the concerns of the JP and assist them with providing solutions for issues they face while they serve citizens. first_imgThe logic of enforcing more taxes amid a slowing economy is beyond logic of several experts. ReutersRecently, the former Reserve Bank of India Governor D Subbarao said the government’s attempt to squeeze out RBI reserves is a sign that it is desperate. This “desperation” could well be killing the animal spirit of the financial markets.Of late the financial markets have borne the brunt of multiple taxes amid an acute slowdown, which has almost killed the investors’ risk-taking appetite. The controversial tax-surcharge on super-rich proposed in the Budget caused an outflow of Rs 12,419 crore in the month of July.According to the NSDL data, this July outflow is one of the worst in the history of Indian financial markets. There has been only four occasions — all of which came around acute financial distress — when the Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) pulled out in excess Rs 12,419 crore.Taxation on long-term capital gains (LTCG) proposed in 2018 Budget, was re-introduced after 14 years which caught the markets by surprise.Besides, the securities transaction tax (STT) has already caused an increase in trading cost. The Dividend Distribution Tax has also disrupted hampered the sentiments of investors at large.Further, the tax on buyback, a way in which companies pay their shareholders, was introduced at 20 per cent in 2019 Budget, which experts noted, played as another disruption. Buyback offers of over Rs 50,000 crore were announced in the year 2018 alone. The logic of enforcing more taxes amid a slowing economy is beyond logic of several experts. To top the local issues the global cues have not been providing any support. The Fed’s hawkish remark and the heightened trade war between the US and China have roiled the financial markets globally.last_img read more

first_imgA person is being rescued as fire broke out at a multi-storey commercial building in Dhaka on 28 March 2019. Photo: ReutersIt was not possible to see anything as there was a dark cloud of smoke everywhere. Within 10 minutes the smoke spread throughout the building making it difficult for people to escape.Exhausted and terrified, Hasina Parvin, credit control manager of Aamra Networks Limited, housed on the 17th floor of the 22-storey Faruk Rupayan (FR) Tower in the capital’s Kamal Ataturk Avenue, said this while narrating her harrowing experience of Thursday’s devastating fire incident that left 25 people dead. The 39-year-old mother of two daughters escaped the horrific fire that broke out on the 6th floor of the building around 12:45pm.”We were at a departmental meeting at that time. Suddenly, we saw through the window huge black smokes bellowing up and noticed a fire at our building,” said she.”Instantly, I along with other colleagues got out of the office and rushed to the staircase. We heard people screaming and saw smoke filling up the staircase,” she added.Firefighters on ladders work to extinguish a blaze in an office building in Dhaka on 28 March 2019. But a little later, it was impossible to stay there because of the smoke,” she went on saying.Parvin and some of her colleagues ran towards the rooftop as it was impossible to get down through the stairs due to the huge dark smoke. After reaching the rooftop, they jumped to the adjacent building, Ahmed Tower, and got down to the ground.Parvin narrated she saw some people jumping off the building breaking open the windowpanes. “Too late to make it to the rooftop for an easier escape, they tried to escape through the windows of the building and some of them fell down.”Fire breaks out at FR Tower in Banani in the capital on Thursdya afternoon. Photo: Prothom AloShe also said people used two ways to escape — some tried to go to the rooftop while some others broke the windowpanes to get to Ahmed Tower.”Till 1:00pm, people were able to make it to the rooftop. But after that, the staircase become too hazy for people to make it through,” she said.Parvin said there were 65 employees on their floor but four of those could not manage to escape. “Later, they were rescued by firefighters around 3:45pm and taken to Apollo Hospitals.”She, however, said there was no emergency fire exit in the 22-storey building that houses dozens of offices. “I’ve been working in this building for around seven years and had the same experience during an earthquake several years back…many panicked people were injured while getting down,” she added.Sushanta Roy, now undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals, told UNB, “Thanks to the Almighty that I’m alive. When I got trapped on the 17th floor, I thought it’s over, I wouldn’t survive. We were unable to breathe properly due to suffocation and black smoke.””We broke opened the glass wall and screamed for help. first_img Our company, Phone Halo has made its fair share of mistakes over the past few years in terms of customer support. The biggest and most important lesson we’ve learned, though, is that it’s critical to have our customer-support team in-house.Nonetheless, investors question whether customer support is a burden to the bottom line of our hardware-focused business; several have suggested that we explore outsourcing this component of the company. This echoes the “big corporation” mentality of the 1950s, rather than promoting the new approach of focusing on customers. Here are five reasons to keep a support team in-house:Related: Revive That Old-Fashioned Extra: Excellent Customer Service1. Installing support software is simple. With the rapid rise of software-as-a-service companies such as Desk, Get Satisfaction and Zendesk, implementing a support system has never been easier or more cost efficient. For example, after our company started using Zendesk, a single customer-support representative can answer and solve more than 100 consumer inquiries (or tickets) in just over an hour. In addition to being highly efficient, these customer-support systems are extremely cost efficient for startups. Zendesk’s most basic package costs just $1 a month for one agent to use.2. Providing the ultimate brand experience. Put aside the idea of sitting on hold with a health insurance agent. Think instead about booking an appointment at Apple’s Genius Bar. Ahhh, much better. Apple’s team shows what support can be. Each Apple employee is highly knowledgeable about the differences between the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, can help new Macbook owners set up devices in a jiffy or might be able to diagnose bigger software-related issues. In short, customer support can provide a company an opportunity to bring its message and brand to life while showing consumers it cares about them.Related: Hello? Is Someone There? Why Customer Support Matters.3. Incorporating engineering driven by customers. When we first released our product, Wallet TrackR, we assumed all customers would use it with their wallets but we soon realized that customers were finding new, innovative uses.Likewise customers can discover new and unexpected use for any company’s product or even find previously unknown glitches. A few weeks ago, our company was alerted about a glitch in TrackR, such that the map would unexpectedly crash. Our customer-support representatives were able to collect vital information via Google Forms and we were able to provide the engineering team a detailed report so the bug was resolved quickly.4. Getting feedback from outside the office. For a resource-constrained startup, it is not always feasible or cost effective to conduct research with customers about what they really want from a product or service. Yet with a well-established customer support system, consumers turn to the company and say what works, what does not, the changes they’d like and more. By keeping customer support in-house, a company can have a wealth of information at its fingertips; entrepreneurs can easily glance over at a representative’s screen to see what a customer is saying.5. Countering the spread of bad news. Unlike the days of the Pony Express when news and information were shared relatively slowly, today’s technology enables communication from California to Sydney in mere seconds, thanks to social-media platforms and email. This also applies to customer support since a team is able to quickly share company news and updates on the fly as things change and information becomes more readily available. Most recently, several hundred of our company’s devices were shipped with the incorrect firmware. With our quick-thinking customer-support team and engineers on hand, we were able to quickly arrive at a solution, train each staffer, walk customers through the firmware fix and avoid future escalation or confusion.Just like engineering can make or break a startup, so can customer support. Which is why it is crucially important to not ignore this seemingly outdated part of a business. Related: Customer Support Is as Easy as 1, 2, 3 4 min read Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. first_imgBarring the Google+ security incident, Google has had an excellent track record for providing exceptional security services to protect different levels of users’ data with ease. Android 9, now aims to provide users with more options to protect user data. To enhance user data security, Android will now be combining Android’s Backup Service and Google Could’s Titan technology to protect data backups while also maintaining the required privacy. Complete backed-up users’ data is essential for rich user experience A lot of time and efforts may be required to create an identity, adding new data, and customizing the users’ settings based on their preferences for an individual app. Whenever the user upgrades to a new device or re-installs the applications, preserving the user data is a must for smooth user experience. A huge chunk of data is generated when using mobile apps, thus adopting proper techniques is necessary to backup the required data. Backing up a small amount of data can be frustrating for users especially when they open the app on a new device. Android Backup service + Titan technology = Secured data backups With Android Pie, devices can now take advantage of a new technique where backed-up application data can only be decrypted using a key. This key is randomly generated at the client. You can encrypt the key using the user’s lock screen PIN/Pattern/passcode, which isn’t known to Google. The password-protected key is encrypted to a Titan security chip on Google Cloud’s datacenter floor. The titan chip is configured in such a way that it will release the backup encryption key only when it is presented with a correct claim derived from the user’s passcode. The titan chip must authorize every access to the decryption key, thus it can permanently block access after too many incorrect attempts at guessing the user’s password. This will mitigate brute force attacks. The number of legal attempts is strictly set by a custom Titan firmware. The number cannot be updated or changed without erasing the contents of the chip. This implies that no one can access the user’s backed-up data without knowing the passcode. Android team hired an external agency for security audit The Android Security & Privacy team hired global cybersecurity and risk mitigation expert NCC Group to complete a security audit, in order to ensure this new technique prevents anyone (including Google) from accessing users application data. The result received positive outcomes around Google’s security design processes, code quality validations, and easing known attack vectors. All these aspects were taken into account prior to launching the service. The engineers corrected some issues quickly which were discovered during the audit. In order to get complete details on how the service fared, you can check the detailed report of NCC Group findings. These external reviews allow Google and Android to maintain transparency and openness which allows users to feel safe about their data, says the Android team.
