Magnus Carlsen, 22, Wins World Chess Title

first_imgCHENNAI, India – Dubbed a Harry Potter-like figure because of his youth, 22-year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen has won the chess world championship to become the first Western player since Bobby Fischer to hold the title.Carlsen defeated defending champion Viswanathan Anand of India after a draw in Game 10 gave him the necessary 6½ points to clinch the win. Playing in Chennai close to where Anand grew up, the Indian finished with 3½ points after seven draws and three losses. Anand 43, had held the title for six years.Carlsen becomes the youngest world champion since Garry Kasparov, who was also 22 – and a few weeks younger than the Norwegian – when he won the title in 1985. Carlsen is a former child prodigy who became a grandmaster at 13 and has been the world’s top-ranked player since 2010.Speaking at a press conference after the victory, Carlsen said he was “very very happy to have won and to have completed this match. “Let’s write the history books later!” he added. Carlsen has won 60% of the total prize fund of $2.24 million, while Anand takes home the rest.Carlsen went into the tournament as a big favorite over the defending champion but was cautious about his chances of winning. When it looked as if he was nearing victory, he told reporters: “This was a very difficult game. There was a fear of being mated all the time”.The young Norwegian stands out amongst chess players, not only for his game but for his persona. A part-time model who has appeared on the front cover of GQ magazine, he exudes an affable personality, a BBC profile noted.Chess champion Susan Polgar commentated on the game and described him as “having a different style and a very good sense of humor.” He will be a “good boost for chess,” she said, a view that was echoed by analysts who say he is likely to change the perception of the game.Chess hasn’t regained the world attention it had when American Bobby Fischer, often regarded as the greatest of all time, mesmerized with his brilliance, winning the title in 1972 in Iceland, beating the great Russian player Boris Spassky. With an eccentric personality, Fischer refused to defend his title in 1975 after a dispute over the playing conditions and became a recluse until 1992 when he came out of retirement to beat Spassky again in Yugoslavia, which was under U.S. Sanctions, leading Fischer to never return to the U.S. After a dispute with the Internal Revenue Service.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

first_imgEditor’s note: This is the fifth in a 15-part series in which we preview college football’s top teams. We’ll be counting down from 15 to one, with the final team, released on Sept. 3 – the day college football starts – serving as our national title pick. 11. Clemson TigersThe Clemson Tigers are a trendy pick to win the ACC this year, despite the fact that Florida State is the three-time defending conference champion. Clemson has won at least 10 games in each of the past four seasons, and many believe that if star quarterback Deshaun Watson can stay healthy all year, the Tigers will have a legitimate shot at taking the next step and competing for a national championship. The program finished on a high note in 2014, blowing out Oklahoma, 40-6, in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Can they keep it rolling into 2015?Clemson kicked off practice just a few days ago. The school has been releasing footage all week.#PAWDrill is back! #Clemson pic.twitter.com/ObxgSOlwt1— Clemson Football (@ClemsonFB) August 10, 2015Not everyone thinks the Tigers have what it takes to win it all, though.Where They’re At In The RankingsUSA TODAY Coaches’ Poll – No. 12ESPN FPI – No. 19Las Vegas odds – No. 20The Schedule Clemson Russell Athletic Bowl RingsTwitter/ClemsonSept. 5 – vs. WoffordSept. 12 – vs. Appalachian StateSept. 17 – at LouisvilleOct. 3 – vs. No. 11 Notre DameOct. 10 – vs. No. 17 Georgia TechOct. 17 – vs. Boston CollegeOct. 24 – at Miami (FL)Oct. 31 – at NC StateNov. 7 – vs. No. 8 Florida StateNov. 14 – at SyracuseNov. 21 – vs. Wake ForestNov. 28 – at South Carolina Key GamesOct. 3 vs. Notre DameClemson gets its first real test at Louisville on a Thursday night in September, but there’s no doubt that Tigers fans have had Notre Dame circled on their 2015 schedule for years. The Irish and Tigers are both considered national title hopefuls, and assuming both have unblemished records heading into the contest, the winner is going to have a leg up for the College Football Playoff rankings. Notre Dame’s defense struggled down the stretch last year, and assuming Watson is still on the field for the Tigers, they’ll have a decent shot at knocking off the historic program. It’ll also be interesting to see how new Fighting Irish starter Malik Zaire deals with Clemson’s likely-formidable secondary. Nov. 7 vs. Florida StateFor as successful as Clemson has been over the past three years, the Tigers still haven’t been able to crack Florida State. In 2015, former Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston (who went No. 1 overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) is gone, and the Seminoles will (most likely) rely on Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson to lead the charge. That being said, Clemson lost at home last year, 23-17, with FSU sporting backup Sean Maguire. If Clemson wants to get serious about finding itself in the College Football Playoff, they’ll have to take care of the Seminoles to get there.Nov. 28 at South CarolinaYes, Clemson vs. South Carolina is still just a non-conference game. But even if both schools were 0-11 heading into it, it would still be the most important contest on the schedule. The in-state rivalry between the two, now dubbed The Palmetto Bowl, is one of the best in the sport. The war of words between Dabo Swinney and Steve Spurrier isn’t too bad, either.Key PlayersDeshaun Watson, sophomore quarterbackWatson had a very bizarre freshman season. Back in April, he broke his collarbone. He started the season as the backup to Cole Stoudt, and after performing very well against Florida State in relief, he was named the team’s starter. A few weeks later, he broke his finger against Louisville and was out of action until mid-November. In returning against Georgia Tech, he tore his ACL. After sitting out against Georgia State, he returned for the team’s rivalry game with South Carolina, and led the Tigers to victory, despite the injury. He then shut it down, opting to have surgery instead of playing against Oklahoma. Got all that? When Watson was on the field, Clemson was a much more efficient team. He threw for 1,466 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions in limited work. He also rushed for 200 yards on 63 attempts. He’s a player single-handedly capable of winning Clemson the conference title. But can he stay healthy?I knew my time was coming, I just had to wait for it. So every night I prayed for opportunities like this. Time to go LIVE it! #WishMeWell— Deshaun Watson (@ShaunWatson4) August 4, 2015Shaq Lawson, junior defensive endClemson boasted one of the country’s top defenses in 2014, but ahead of the 2015 campaign, the Tigers will have to replace eight starters. Lawson, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound stud defensive end, should help to ease that burden. He’s one of the best at his position in the ACC. If the Tigers are going to hang their hat on defense again this year, he’ll have to be a menace.Lawson was a Freshman All-American in 2013, and last year, he recorded 44 tackles, including 11 for loss. If he’s able to continue improving, he’ll be one of the most feared players in the country. It’s time to seperate the good from the great. Until January social media… It’s time to go to work boys.— Shaq Lawson (@Shaq_Lawson90) August 4, 2015Wayne Gallman, sophomore running backDespite winning 10 games in 2014, Clemson struggled running the football. In fact, the Tigers finished 81st in rushing offense, averaging just 3.5 yards per attempt. Much of that was because Cole Stoudt, who isn’t an overly athletic signal-caller, was on the field a good portion of the year. But the team’s running backs didn’t put up staggering numbers either. The longest run from scrimmage was only 34 yards – by Wayne Gallman. Gallman, who led the team in both carries (161) and yards (769) last season, will need to improve in his sophomore year. Clemson will need to have a strong running game to compete this year – especially if Watson ever catches the injury bug again.twitter see yall in January. #doakseason pic.twitter.com/6iFngorvX8— Wayne Gallman II (@Wanye_Kanye) August 4, 2015 Why They Can Win The National TitleClemson returns just 11 starters from last year’s team, so it’s possible that the Tigers are a year or two away from competing for a national championship. The squad may not have the defense it had a year ago, given the departures of Vic Beasley, Stephone Anthony and Tony Steward, but head coach Dabo Swinney does seem to have confidence in this year’s unit. If he’s right, Clemson will be formidable. The other major factor, obviously, is Watson’s health. If he can stay on the field, Clemson will be very difficult to stop. But the second he’s sidelined, the Tigers will either be relying on junior Nick Schuessler, who has attempted 10 passes in his career, or a true freshman with zero experience. Every time Watson goes down, Tigers fans will collectively be holding their breath.Regardless, Clemson’s program seems to be in a good place. If everything falls right in 2015, the Tigers could have a special year.Yesterday: No. 12 LSU; up tomorrow: No. 10 Florida Statelast_img read more

Fans leave comments on everything the star does, hoping their message somehow catches the stars attention. Well now, thanks to soon-to-be-launched app CHATTER, lucky fans will get 5 minutes of undivided attention from their favorite stars.Beginning June 4th, fans will be able to purchase a $5 raffle ticket through the Chatter App, and a random winner will win the 5-minute video chat. For fans, it’s a dream come true. And for stars, instead of flying out to attend dinner galas, they can now pick up their phone wherever they are and chat with a fan while maintaining their privacy. After securing seed funding from Innovation Factory, Chatter is gearing up for its global launch on iOS and Android on June 4. Celebrities signed up to participate include Leonardo DiCaprio, Drake, Bryshere Gray (Empire), YouTube stars Arika Soto and Tyler Oakley, Snapchat star YesJulz, and Instagram models @Chantelzales and @SophiaMiacova, and dozens of others to be announced in the coming weeks.Dinner galas filled with stars work. Look no further than The Robin Hood Foundation, whose annual dinner gala raised $60 Million on May 12th. Co-founder Pasha King notes, “Obviously the stars-charity concept works. But there needs to be a more accessible platform. Crises don’t care when your annual gala is. We should be able to quickly rally around crises that need urgent attention.”Pasha King says the Flint water crisis inspired Chatter. King says, “Certain stars were donating personally, but it was happening too slowly. There was no way to rally the community quickly. It’s not that stars don’t want to contribute – that’s not the issue. If we had this platform last year, imagine how much more we could have done to help.”Now there is. Chatter found a fun way to mix crowdfunding and stars, while letting some lucky fans have an experience of a lifetime.“Chatter is the easiest way for stars to donate to a charity of their choice,” says Teague Egan, co-founder of Chatter. “It’s a very simple concept that’s taking off because it’s easy and fun to use, and everyone comes away with positive vibes. We have a scoreboard we will be unveiling in the near future, which tracks how much stars raised for charity through Chatter. I’m excited to see stars compete to see who raises the most!”For more information on Chatter, visit www.chatterforcharity.com.last_img read more

OSU co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell walks out of the Buckeyes’ locker room before a game against Maryland on Nov. 12. Credit: Alexa Mavrogianis | Photo EditorWhen Urban Meyer was hired as Ohio State’s head coach at the end of the 2011 season, many saw the possibility for a dynasty. Meyer’s MO had been his ability to implement a high-octane, prolific offense to whichever program he was coaching. He is one of a few coaches that reshaped the offensive landscape of college football, primarily switching to a spread from a pro-style offense. Since the OSU football program’s earliest days, the Buckeyes have been viewed as a team that excels on the defensive end. Since 2002, when Luke Fickell joined the OSU staff, the characterization of a tough, blue-collar defense stood out in the program’s seven Big Ten championships, four national championship berths and two national titles. The offensive firepower of an Urban Meyer offense combined with the traditionally stout Buckeyes’ defense was a formula many thought would put OSU in the running for a national championship every season. But Meyer came close to making his own recipe.During Meyer’s first two years at the helm for OSU, the Buckeye defense wasn’t the same. After 24 consecutive victories, OSU dropped the Big Ten Championship game to Michigan State and the 2014 Discover Orange Bowl to Clemson. OSU allowed an average of 377 passing yards over the last three games. The Scarlet and Gray ranked 118th out of 125 teams in passing defense.“I did not want to keep (Luke Fickell) when I got here,” Meyer said. “We weren’t very good on defense for a couple years and that stressed things out just a touch around here.”Fickell served as interim head coach before Meyer arrived in Columbus in 2011, going 6-7. Fickell was retained by Meyer as co-defensive coordinator, sharing the duties with Everett Withers, who also coached safeties. After coming within earshot of playing for a national title in 2013, it was clear to Meyer that a change had to be made on defense. In 2014, Fickell was the one who stayed and Withers took another job while current Rutgers head coach Chris Ash was hired by Meyer to replace Withers. The Buckeyes’ secondary underwent a complete overhaul, improving to 15th in passing defense and picking off 25 passes on its way to a national championship. Fickell, in charge of the linebackers, transformed Darron Lee into a freshman All-American after switching from safety.Fickell has produced 12 NFL draft picks so far in his coaching career, as well as dominated the state of Ohio in recruiting — a couple reasons why the University of Cincinnati hired him as its next head coach.“You do not have to be on the best terms at all times,” Fickell said. “Sometimes discomfort breeds growth. To push somebody deep down inside, you gotta know it’s for a reason. That’s the thing I can say, at times, we’ve had these discussions before we’ve had tough times. That’s a part of the game and what you really do is step back and able to realize how much you respect him because of it.”In the midst of preparing for OSU’s national semifinal bout against Clemson on Dec. 31 in Glendale, Arizona, Fickell accepted an offer from Cincinnati to become the Bearcats next head football coach. The long-tenured Ohioan — the one who played for St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus, played for John Cooper for four years and coached under Jim Tressel — now will attempt to create his own legacy in the same state that he has built his career.A career that Fickell said wouldn’t be anything without his wife, Amy, and their six children.“Sometimes you take advantage of the people you love the most,” he said. “My family understands that. My wife understands that, my kids understand that, I hope, to some extent. For right now, those are the things that suffer the most. I couldn’t do that without a great wife.”Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Luke Fickell celebrates with junior cornerback Doran Grant (12) following an interception during a game against Purdue Nov. 2, 2013 at Ross-Ade Stadium. OSU won, 56-0.Credit: Lantern File PhotoIf Fickell had left after 2013 for another job, he said that it wouldn’t have felt right not leaving on a high note. When former OSU offensive coordinator Tom Herman was hired at Houston during preparation for the College Football Playoff in 2014, he chose to coach throughout the playoff with the Buckeyes. Fickell will do the same this year, preparing for the CFP semifinal against the No. 2 Clemson Tigers (12-1), while trying to balance his position at Cincinnati.“I told them even when I was introduced down at Cincinnati, I wanted to look at every kid and make them realize why I’m doing what I’m doing,” Fickell said. “I’m doing what I’m doing because we started something and I would never start something without finishing it.”One of the players that Fickell has impacted the most is junior linebacker Raekwon McMillan. A five-star recruit from Hinesville, Georgia, that Fickell recruited, McMillan said the best quality about Fickell is his trust in his coaching, sticking with one defensive philosophy since McMillan’s freshman year in 2014.McMillan was an impact player on the national championship team and soon will be another member of Fickell’s linebackers in the NFL. In his time at OSU, Fickell said he hasn’t seen a player that means more to a unit than McMillan.“He’s been able to guide me through all my blessings I’ve been given here at Ohio State and put me in the position I’m in today,” McMillan said. “Through the ups and downs, he stayed on my side, and even the guys beside me, nurtured us and have us become men.”In his last days as a an assistant coach at OSU, Fickell is facing one of his most difficult tasks yet as a defensive coach. Clemson averages 505.5 yards per game on offense, led by Heisman Trophy finalist Deshaun Watson. In 2014, when Clemson put up 40 points and over 500 yards against the Buckeyes, some thought that result would spell the end for Fickell’s time in Columbus. Since then, Fickell has turned into one of Meyer’s most trusted colleagues the past three seasons.“One of the greatest things I’ve ever done was keep Luke Fickell,” Meyer said. “He’s a loyal, good man and a very good friend of mine. We’ll be very close for a long time.” read more

It spread to my record company, my family [and] my record company that indulge [my] crazy whims. … Watch Mon Laferte Win First Career Latin GRAMMY Luis Fonsi and Bomba Estéreo’s Li SaumetPhoto: Kevin Winter/Getty Images ResidentePhoto: Kevin Winter/WireImage.com Eduardo Cabra Wins Latin Producer Of The Year Luis Fonsi: “Despacito” Wins Record Of The Year JuanesPhoto: Lester Cohen/Getty Images Luis FonsiPhoto: Davide Becker/WireImage.com JuanesPhoto: Lester Cohen/Getty Images Ruben BladesPhoto: Maury Philips/Getty Images Luis Fonsi, “Despacito” Wins Song Of The Year NETWORK ERRORCannot Contact ServerRELOAD YOUR SCREEN OR TRY SELECTING A DIFFERENT VIDEO Nov 16, 2017 – 7:22 pm Natalia Lafourcade Best Folk Album | Acceptance See Stars On The 18th Latin GRAMMYs Red Carpet Photo: Bryan Steffy/Getty Images Ruben BladesPhoto: Maury Philips/Getty Images Natalia LafourcadePhoto: Michael Tran/FilmMagic Natalia LafourcadePhoto: Michael Tran/FilmMagic Vicente García Wins Best Singer-Songwriter Album JuanesPhoto: Lester Cohen/Getty Images Natalia Lafourcade Wins Folk Album Latin GRAMMY natalia-lafourcade-wins-best-folk-album-18th-latin-grammys Justin Bieber Wins First Career Latin GRAMMY Read more Flor De Toloache | Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album Natalia Lafourcade, winner of Best Folk Album for Musas (Un Homenaje Al Folclore Latinoamericano En Manos De Los Macorinos, Vol. 1) and Best Long Form Music Video for Musas, El Documental — Natalia LafourcadePhoto: David Becker/Getty Images Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Vicente GarcíaPhoto: John Parra/Getty Images Alejandro Sanz: Person Of The Year Highlights Watch Eduardo Cabra Accept Producer Of The Year “Despacito” Wins Latin Record Of The Year Residente Wins Best Urban Music Album Latin GRAMMY Erika EnderPhoto: Bryan Steffy/Getty Images “Despacito” Wins Latin Record Of The Year Latin Academy Honors Women In Entertainment Photo: Juan Naharro Gimenez/Getty Images Vicente García Best New Artist | Acceptance Speech “There they are, and they tell me, “Let’s go forward.” [Thank you to] the team of people that have been behind this Musas [album] that we completed. The studio version showcases a fully produced arrangement for the breezy number, complete with fluid harmonies, piano and a rigid backbeat.Though “Butterflies” radiates with shiny optimism, the heart-wrenching “Space Cowboy” treads along the opposite of the relationship spectrum. “You can have your space, cowboy, I ain’t gonna fence you in,” Musgraves introspectively sings amid pedal steel licks and ambient effects.Due March 30, Golden Hour was tracked above a horse stable at fellow GRAMMY winner Sheryl Crow’s house. The album is now available for pre-order.In the meantime, Texas native Musgraves is scheduled to head out on the road with Harry Styles in June. first_imgAll three of the White Baltimore police officers who were charged but not convicted in the death of Freddie Gray were recently honored at a conservative gala in Washington, D.C.(Left to Right) Lt. Brian Rice and Officers Garrett Miller and Edward Nero were hailed as heroes at the Media Research Center’s annual black tie gala Sept. 22. (AP Photos)Lt. Brian Rice and Officers Garrett Miller and Edward Nero were hailed as heroes at the Media Research Center’s annual black tie gala Sept. 22. The African-American officers who were indicted in connection with Gray’s death—Sgt. Alicia White, Ofc. Caesar Goodson Jr. and Ofc. William Porter—were neither honored nor present at the event. It is unknown at this time if they were invited.“In April of last year, six Baltimore police officers were transporting Freddie Gray to jail and he died en route,” said Deneen Borelli, chief political correspondent for Conservative Review, according to a video of the event posted on the organization’s website. “Immediately someone made the accusation that Freddie Gray had been killed by the police. The accusation grew and grew – fed by the left, political agitators, and the national media – to advance the anti-police narrative. Soon there were riots in the street.”In presenting the awards, Borelli—one of Fox News’ frequent African-American contributors—seemed to pay short shrift to Gray’s death from spinal cord injuries brought on by his unsecured ride in the back of a police truck in April of last year. Instead, she painted the cops, who remain on administrative leave pending the results of an internal police investigation, as the victims because of their indictments and trials.“These five men and one woman, all veteran police officers, were now in handcuffs, fighting for their lives, their careers destroyed, bankrupted, humiliated,” she said. This May 1, 2015, file photo provided by the Baltimore Police Department shows, top row from left, Caesar R. Goodson Jr., Garrett E. Miller and Edward M. Nero, and bottom row from left, William G. Porter, Brian W. Rice and Alicia D. White, the six police officers charged with felonies ranging from assault to murder in the death of Freddie Gray. Baltimore prosecutors on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016, asked a judge to delay the trials of Rice, Miller and Nero, who are charged with assault, misconduct and reckless endangerment. Rice is also charged with manslaughter. (Baltimore Police Department via AP, File)While the gala’s audience of about 800 cheered the three Baltimore officers, Baltimore Police Commissioner Kevin Davis criticized their appearance at the partisan event.“I was certainly disappointed by their appearance there, and any time a person in public safety appears for or with a group that society looks at as a fringe group, and the group is divisive and doesn’t speak to the values of Baltimore, I think that’s a problem,” Davis told Baltimore NBC affiliate WBAL-TV. He added, “I look at this as an opportunity to take a look at our policy to make sure it is stringent enough that will preclude police officers from engaging in that type of off-duty activity.”According to its website, the right-wing group’s chief mission is “to expose and neutralize the propaganda arm of the Left: the national news media.” The main feature of the annual soiree is the DisHonors Awards, a roast of what the group deems the most egregious examples of “biased liberal reporting.” Recipients of this year’s dishonest awards were former and current MSNBC hosts Melissa Harris-Perry, Joy Reid and Chris Matthews.last_img read more

first_imgWhile strolling or running are beneficial for heart health, light physical activity, such as gardening and folding clothes, may also lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in older women, say researchers. The study showed that such activities might be enough to significantly reduce stroke or heart failure by up to 22 per cent and the risk of heart attack or coronary death by as much as 42 per cent. The association was strong across all racial and ethnic groups, noted the study published in the journal JAMA Network Open. Also Read – Add new books to your shelf”The higher the amount of activity, the lower the risk,” said co-author Andrea LaCroix, Researcher at the University of California, San Diego. “And the risk reduction showed regardless of the women’s overall health status, functional ability or even age. In other words, the association with light physical activity was apparent regardless of these other factors,” LaCroix added. For the study, researchers studied nearly 6,000 women aged 63 to 97. They were made to wear a device which measured their movement 24 hours a day for seven consecutive days. The device was also calibrated by age to distinguish between light, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Most people do not think of folding clothes or walking to the mailbox as physical activity of any kind, the researchers said. “This study suggests that for older women, any and all movement counts towards better cardiovascular health.”last_img read more
