first_imgHouston players run our onto the field on game day.YouTube/UHAthleticsMany had high expectations for Tom Herman as head coach. As became very apparent this season, Herman was instrumental in turning Ohio State into an offensive juggernaut despite all kinds of injury issues at quarterback last season. I don’t know that anyone realistically thought Herman would elevate Houston to this level in just one year, though. At 12-1, with an AAC title under their belt, the Cougars are off to the Peach Bowl for a New Year’s Eve showdown with ACC powerhouse Florida State. Houston fans shouldn’t need any help getting excited for this one, but just in case, Houston put together a quick 30 second teaser trailer for the game, and it is quite epic. The Cougs and ‘Noles kick off in Atlanta at noon on December 31.last_img

first_imgImagine having to traverse through a riverbed to get to and from your community on a daily basis, or travel for miles using the alternative route when it becomes impassable. That was the reality for hundreds of residents in several communities in North East St. Catherine, when the Dover Castle main road was left impassable following the collapse of a bridge during Tropical Storm Nicole in 2010.The collapsed bridge meant that motorists had to drive through an orange grove to get to the communities of Redwood and Guys Hill. With the Government’s recent construction of a $23.3 million Bailey bridge, the residents’ lives have been significantly changed and they now have easier access to their homes. The single lane bridge, which was officially opened last week, replaces the structure that collapsed two years ago. It serves the communities of Dover Castle, Redwood, Jubilee Town, Golden Grove, Guys Hill and adjoining areas.Speaking to JIS News, resident Devon Morris, says he is extremely grateful. “What dem do today was nice and joyful. Dem see to it that we get a bridge so everything will be alright, we can drive through comfortable,” he says.He adds that without the bridge, “we have a hard time with people coming into the district”.Joined by several other beneficiaries, Mr. Morris thanked the Government and National Works Agency (NWA), for the new bridge.Speaking to JIS News during the official opening, Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, Hon. Richard Azan, said the project, which got underway in January this year, was completed within schedule and budget.Works included the construction of gabion baskets; bridge abutments; a rubble retaining wall and approach roads. The State Minister urged operators of heavy duty vehicles to use alternative routes at John’s Pen and Berkshire Hall, as the structure has a carrying capacity of only 50 tonnes.Meanwhile, NWA Communications Manager, Stephen Shaw, says warning signs will be erected shortly to advise motorists of the limited carrying capacity.“Being a 50-tonne structure, we don’t expect to see a trailer going across this bridge because it is not built to accommodate those types of units,” he tells JIS News.Mr. Shaw is urging residents to assist in keeping the structure in place and to ensure that it is not compromised by misuse. “What we would also be appealing to residents to do, is assist us in keeping this very vital piece of infrastructure in place. They are the ones who have been suffering since Tropical Storm Nicole in 2010, when they had to be walking in the river bed, climbing out and then finding their way beyond this point. So they have an interest in ensuring that the bridge stays in place and is not compromised in any way by misuse,” he says.Member of Parliament for North East St. Catherine, Gregory Mair, commended the Government for undertaking the project. “This is a process that was initiated all the way back from 2010 and the present Government made it their business to see it come to its completion. I am very happy for the people in the surrounding areas; finally we got the bridge done. So I think it’s a relief and I am extremely appreciative for the construction of this bridge,” he said.Other works under the project included: river training works 50 metres upstream and 50 metres downstream; realignment of the roadway; and the raising and re-paving of the roadway with asphaltic concrete. The contractor for the project was Aegisco Limited.By Chris Patterson, JIS Reporterlast_img read more

first_imgHALIFAX – Homesick Haligonians can now tune into around-the-clock footage of Halifax’s official food: the donair. The “Donair Cam” is a 24-hour live stream of a seasoned log of meat spinning on a rotating spit.Ralf Pickart, owner of the website Nova Scotia Webcams, said he hopes the Donair Cam will help Maritimers who live away reconnect with their home.“Nova Scotians who are away out west and all over, when they come back, the first thing they want is a donair because it can’t be replicated anywhere,” he said.“People are always homesick, missing family and friends — and donairs are a part of that.”Pickart said he came up with the idea while brainstorming for a new live webcam. He then approached restaurant King Of Donair, a Halifax staple synonymous with the east coast delicacy.Restaurant owner Nicholas Nahas said he jumped at the opportunity to prompt cravings for the greasy treat 24 hours a day.King of Donair has laid claim to creating the original donair, which features shaved spicy meat, tomato, onion, and donair sauce wrapped in a pita.In 2015, the dish was named the official food of Halifax.Social media was abuzz after Nova Scotia Webcams debuted the Donair Cam, with many drooling over the spinning meat log.Twitter user Rachel Harding tweeted: “I have two screens at my desk but usually only ever use one. Not anymore. #DonairCam.”On Facebook, a user named Sue Mollins-Hamilton wrote: “This makes me very happy… and homesick.”Pickart said he also hopes to raise awareness about Nova Scotia Webcams, an independent website that offers more than 75 livestreams around the province.“Depending on how it catches on, (Donair Cam) can last forever,” Pickart said. “Certainly, I would say it’s there to entertain people and at some point, they will get hungry and hopefully get a donair.”On the web: https://donaircam.com/(Global News, The Canadian Press)last_img read more

first_imgCALGARY – Western Canadian farmers are using proceeds from a good harvest last year to buy more new agricultural equipment after years of settling for used as prices of U.S.-made machinery rose due to the stronger American dollar. Both Cervus Equipment Corp. and Rocky Mountain Dealerships Inc. are reporting increased earnings thanks to higher profit margins and manufacturers’ incentive payments on sales of new equipment in 2017 versus 2016.Cervus CEO Graham Drake says the company expects strong sales of new equipment to continue in 2018 after sales leaped ahead by 20 per cent last year, driven by good harvests and “windows” of favourable currency exchange rates. He cited the improved outlook in announcing an increase in the quarterly dividend from seven to 10 cents per share.CEO Garrett Ganden says Rocky Mountain Dealerships is also banking on Canadian farmer optimism this year, noting continuing good prices on solid crop production and a harvest last fall that wasn’t hampered by late-season wet conditions as it was in 2016.Cervus reported revenue from new equipment sales rose 20 per cent to $447 million in 2017, while Rocky Mountain noted a 5.7 per cent increase to $436 million. Both companies are based in Calgary.Rocky Mountain, which sells Case IH and New Holland equipment, says it is Canada’s largest agriculture equipment dealer with 35 dealerships across the Prairies.Cervus, which sells John Deere machinery, has interests in 35 dealerships, 20 in Western Canada, nine in New Zealand and six in Australia.last_img read more

It’s Monday, and that means it’s time for another edition of FiveThirtyEight’s NBA Power Ratings. The least you need to know about how these numbers work: Each team is ranked according to a projection of its strength over the upcoming week — and the upcoming week only — using Real Plus-Minus (RPM) player ratings provided by Jeremias Engelmann and Steve Ilardi. For more details on the ratings, see our introductory rankings post.(Note: These ratings were calculated before news broke that Chicago’s Jimmy Butler would miss three to six weeks with an elbow injury. Butler carried a strong +3.2 RPM rating, so replacing his 26 minutes per game with a replacement-level player would drop the Bulls from 11th place to a tie for 19th with the Pistons. Chicago’s saving grace might be that the average player below Butler on the team’s depth chart is significantly better than replacement level, but there’s no doubt that this news reduces the Bulls’ rating.)Some observations about the rankings this week:The Oklahoma City Thunder climbed more in the rankings from last week than any other team, leaping from No. 13 to No. 6. The biggest reason? The expectation that Kevin Durant will return in some capacity this week, even if in reduced minutes, was worth 1.7 points per 100 possessions to OKC’s overall rating. The ripple effects of Durant’s return extend beyond his own increased minutes. Our playing-time projections also see Dion Waiters (whose extremely negative RPM falls below the replacement level) getting fewer minutes on the wing — a boon of 0.8 points/100 to the Thunder’s rating. More minutes may also go to plus-minus darling Andre Roberson,1Relative to other metrics at least; from his awful 9.9 Player Efficiency Rating (PER), you wouldn’t expect his RPM to be a strong +2.4. and fewer minutes will go to guard D.J. Augustin, an additional 0.6 point boost for OKC’s rating. The mix of very good and very poor players on the Thunder roster makes the team a great case study in how much effect playing-time reshuffling can have on a team’s overall talent rating. The Atlanta Hawks dropped four spots in this week’s rankings, largely because Al Horford (+2.3 RPM rating), Jeff Teague (+1.3), DeMarre Carroll (+1.2) and Pero Antic (+0.8) are all listed as day-to-day in the team’s injury report. Those slight playing-time downgrades gave more minutes to a host of negative RPM players; chief among them are Dennis Schroder and Kent Bazemore.Joining the Hawks with a four-slot decline this week are the Toronto Raptors. More than half of Toronto’s 1.8 point ratings drop is driven by an injury to Kyle Lowry — and the resulting uptick in playing time for the man behind him on the team’s point guard depth chart, Lou Williams. Williams’s box-score numbers are very good, and Toronto has played much better with him on the court this season. But Real Plus-Minus isn’t convinced despite his great 2014-15 season to date. His long-term predictive RPM is currently -1.9 — with a -3.6 defensive mark — numbers only slightly improved from his -2.0/-3.7 ratings from the end of last season. For all the changes just outside the league’s top tier — in addition to the rise of OKC and declines of Atlanta and Toronto, the Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets both moved up a pair of spots — the top four in our rankings stayed constant. This marks the first time that’s been true since we introduced the rankings in mid-January.With Oklahoma City’s gains, the Western Conference playoff picture is all but set. Seven teams have postseason probabilities in excess of 97 percent, and the Thunder don’t sit too far behind, at 92.7 percent. As for the East, it boasts six teams with playoff odds of 99.6 percent or greater, although there’s some drama to be had with six teams battling for the conference’s final two playoff berths. The Indiana Pacers have the inside track for one of the slots, with a 62.7 percent playoff probability, but none of the five teams behind them are any more than 40.2 percent likely to qualify, which ought to bring at least some tension to the final month and a half of the season.Related to the previous point, it’s worth mentioning that the Utah Jazz have a zero percent probability of making the playoffs despite ranking 12th in talent. What happened? Utah’s record has undershot its Pythagorean expectation by three wins, but the team has also improved its talent rating recently (granted, by too little and too late) by jettisoning Enes Kanter and his -2.5 RPM in a three-team trade with Oklahoma City and the Detroit Pistons. Finally, who on earth is Joffrey Lauvergne? Our projections had the French big man down for 2.8 minutes per game for the Denver Nuggets last week, but he ended up averaging 21 minutes per game instead (and even got a starting nod against the Jazz on Friday). Denver might be toning down Lauvergne’s playing time after he shot 38 percent from the floor and posted a -36 plus-minus in that lone start, but his expected role increase — and -4.4 RPM rating — is still enough to help the Nuggets drop by five slots in the rankings. They’re still not New York Knicks bad, but after their mass talent exodus at the trade deadline, the Nuggets now bring up the rear of the non-Knicks/Philadelphia 76ers division of the power rankings. read more

Trevor Thompson (right) looks on during the 2014 Spring Game April 12 at Ohio Stadium. Thompson announced his decision to transfer to Ohio State April 13.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorTo say the Ohio State basketball team is going through an overhaul is a bit of an understatement.First, the Buckeyes saw the careers of two of the most decorated players in program history — a total of 119 wins — come to a close on a cold, windy day in Buffalo, N.Y., more than three weeks ago when senior guards Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr. battled to a 60-59 loss Dayton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Two days later, sophomore guard Amedeo Della Valle told coach Thad Matta of his intentions to leave Columbus and head back home to Europe to pursue a professional basketball career. Then only six days later, OSU got hit with another departure — this time its leading scorer — when junior forward LaQuinton Ross announced his intentions to follow in Della Valle’s footsteps and leave early to pursue a pro career. But with 40 points per game lost from the 2013-14 season, Matta didn’t flinch. In fact, he might even come out on top.Barely two weeks after adding Temple transfer and redshirt-junior forward Anthony Lee to his roster, OSU’s basketball coach landed another big man, as Virginia Tech freshman Trevor Thompson committed to OSU Sunday, per a report by ESPN College Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman.“I love the academics, the fans, my new teammates and the coaching staff,” Thompson told ESPN. “It was the perfect fit.”Thompson also took to Twitter to announce his decision, one day after attending the OSU football Spring Game.“Well it’s official I’m a Ohio State Buckeye Show Me Love #BuckEyeNation !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” Thompson tweeted from his personal account, @TrevBallinTrey2, at 1:29 p.m. Sunday.Thompson, a 6-foot-11 center who will likely sit out the 2014-15 season per NCAA transfer rules unless he chooses to request a waiver from the NCAA because of his father’s medical condition, averaged 5.0 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this past season at Virginia Tech.An OSU spokesman did not immediately respond to The Lantern’s request for comment about the transfer Sunday. Attempts to contact Thompson directly also were unsuccessful. The addition of Thompson brings the scholarship count of the men’s basketball program to 12, one below the NCAA allotted 13.If Thompson does sit out the 2014-15 season, he is set to be one of two centers on OSU’s roster in 2015-16, as junior centers Trey McDonald and Amir Williams are scheduled to enter their final season of eligibility next year. The other center who is set to be on roster with Thompson is David Bell, who is a member of Matta’s 2014 recruiting class. That class also includes guard D’Angelo Russell and forwards Jae’Sean Tate and Keita Bates-Diop.Other members slated to be a part of next year’s squad that saw action in 2013-14 aside from Williams and McDonald — who combined averaged 9.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game this past season — include junior forward Sam Thompson, junior guard Shannon Scott and freshman fowrward Marc Loving. Freshman Kam Williams figures to be in the mix as well after sitting out last season as he battled back from illness. read more

first_imgLast year, in partnership with Stratton Publishing & Marketing, the Angerosa Research Foundation reported that 85 percent of associations published at least one e-newsletter, with 67 percent publishing more than one. Despite e-newsletter production growth, a number of association publishers—including American School Board Journal editor-in-chief Glenn Cook—consider high-security spam filters to be directly impacting open-rates, and in turn, readership. For Carole Hayward, director of newsletters and special publications for educational association ASCD, those spam filters, which are used by a number of schools, make it challenging to deliver news to members. ASCD uses a third-party media service to send one of its e-newsletters, “but even they can’t solve the problem entirely,” said Hayward. While the best solution is spam-checking e-newsletters before sending them to readers, there are other ways to get past the filters: Break Up the List When sending e-news to members, “try breaking the recipients into several groups and sending out the same e-mail under a slightly different subject line,” said ASBJ publications coordinator Margaret Suslick. Shorten Subject Lines“Our subject lines are short,” said Cook. One of its highest e-alert open rates, he said, was for the four-word subject line “A Day to Remember.”Appealing Subjects Are Likely Targets“I’ve found that trying to offer members ‘free’ anything via e-mail is a great way to end up in the spam folder,” said Hayward. Words like “dollar,” “free,” and “savings” are all culprits when it comes to marking e-newsletters as junk mail. Hayward said subject lines like “Top 10 Tips” tend to bypass spam filters and appeal to members.Send Links, Not SurveysASBJ sends its reader panel survey via a link in its e-newsletter instead of embedding the survey, giving its digital offerings additional protection from spam filters.last_img read more

first_imgMathurapur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a public rally in West Bengal’s Mathurapur on May 16, 2019.IANS [Representational Image]After smashing through all bastions in the north and middle India — from Haryana, Himachal, Uttarakhand and Delhi in the north to Bengal in the east, all the way up to Assam in the northeast, Hindutva has a new sheen, hue and connotation. It is a relentless drum roll of persuasion which argues for Hindutva Plus, the dynasty is damned.Plugging and playing into the fears and aspirations on a rapidly evolving India, the politics of appeasement has given way to majoritarianism instead of greater inclusiveness. India circa 2019 stands on the cusp of a new age, discarding the age of identity politics.A fork has come on the road where miasma and prevarications have been junked, it is a strategic shift where the GOP has been blown out of the water for the second time in a row. It is time to accept what was thought to be politically incorrect, for there is a fine line between calculation and candour. The short path between the two is strewn with deceit.Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s unique populist development model predicated on welfare economics to connect with the poorest of the poor at the bottom of the pyramid is his other arrow in the quiver. Empowering people and reaching out to them with the fruits of economic reforms has been his version of Modinomics.A catalogue of welfare schemes targeting the poor has obviously worked on the ground. This double attack is paying enormous dividends. From forward castes to SC/ST and backwards, the Modi equity and persona is larger than life almost Gargantuan and unstoppable.By being the progenitor of the Hindu vote bank, Narendra Modi using subliminal messaging to give majoritarian forces a new identity has swept all-comers over the last five years in Indian electoral politics. The new Hindu order works on the cult of appeasement and anti-minorityism. A consolidation of the Hindu vote cutting across caste fault lines has helped Modi win repeatedly in recent memory.First when he bagged 73 out of 80 seats (including two Apna Dal victories) in the 2014 general hustings followed by a virtual rout of the opposition in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh state elections. In between there is Assam, Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir and in totality a clear triumph for the Hindu Hriday Samrat Narendra Modi as the Hindu vote aggregated behind him.Covert messaging appealing to the subconscious against appeasement and constant pandering of Muslims has led to the spectre of anti-minortiyism making Hindus vote en bloc thrice over in Uttar Pradesh. Pertinently, this phenomenon goes beyond the temple and Ayodhya, it is about Hindu Asmita or chauvinism or even machismo which was compromised by pandering to minorities. It has struck a chord with Hindus, across all strata and states. Resulting in naked majoritarianism and even Islamophobia and Muslim bashing, an unfortunate spin-off being mob lynchings and the cow assuming a larger-than-life position in our collective national consciousness. A supporter of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party waves the party flag during an election campaign rally being addressed by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.Reuters file [Representational Image]Deep down, this grouse of appeasement has resulted in a consolidation of the Hindu vote. Modi and BJP President Amit Shah know that the rise of majoritarianism in India is peaking and is still to reach a crescendo.Increasingly, majoritarianism is equal to faux nationalism. This translates into majoritarianism nationalism as a derivative of ethnocentrism. While India, unlike its neighbours in South Asia, has been accommodative of religious and linguistic minorities all these years, the trendline is changing dramatically. The almost imperceptible shift in India of the middle ground of public opinion in favour of Hindu ultra-nationalism rather than Hindutva is clear as daylight. Hindutva has actualised into a Hindu identity shift. Hindutva may not necessarily mean Ram Temple and Ayodhya anymore, but a more aggressive mien displayed by Hindus who want to reclaim their identity and land. Aggrieved as they reckon they are after years of minority pacification. I condemn these lynchings, an offshoot of lumpenisation and mobocracy, but equally, understand the need for Hindus to reclaim their identity. The wave of majority identity politics across the world is a harsh reality.Majoritarian impulses have sparked humiliation of religious minorities and lower castes in India, driving a cleave within the fabric of India. The faultlines have become so stark that the Congress under Rahul Gandhi tried practising a similar type of soft Hindutva identity politics.Nida Kirmani, a Associate Professor of Sociology in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Lahore University of Management Sciences and her views published in the Dawn sometime back provide an interesting prism: The seeds of this majoritarianism were not only present in the explicitly right-wing BJP but were also present in the rhetoric of the Congress party. And alongside the bonds of cooperation and friendship between religious communities were also strands of resentment and distrust, which flared up periodically. Modi did not create Hindu majoritarianism. He only stoked the embers that had been simmering in the Indian polity for several decades. However, India is not exceptional; majoritarianism is not an exclusively Hindu malaise. Like twins separated at birth, India and Pakistan both continue to carry the same toxic ingredients within our countries’ DNA.Somewhere in these two-three lines remains buried the Modi DNA, that he is not the creator of Hindu majoritarianism, but has played on the underlying fears of the Hindu majority embedded deep in their psyche. It is very subtle at one level, but the contagion of stimulating the threshold of this particular sensation has spread far and wide. It has kick-started a consciousness that the minority has been given too much and it is constantly taking from the majority. More than that, it will become the majority in India if this process of appeasement continues — is another strand to this theme. While this may not be true, the latent and dormant intuitive mind listens to the inner voice which plays on these very underlying fears.Majoritarianism is a global phenomenon, an offshoot of terrorist attacks and the rise of Islamists and Jihadists. Kenneth Roth, writing in the World Report succinctly articulates its dangerous rise: The appeal of the populists has grown with mounting public discontent over the status quo.In the West, many people feel left behind by technological change, the global economy, and growing inequality. Horrific incidents of terrorism generate apprehension and fear. Some are uneasy with societies that have become more ethnically, religiously and racially diverse. There is an increasing sense that governments and the elite ignore public concerns. In this cauldron of discontent, certain politicians are flourishing and even gaining power by portraying rights as protecting only the terrorist suspect or the asylum seeker at the expense of the safety, economic welfare, and cultural preferences of the presumed majority. INDRANIL MUKHERJEE/AFP/Getty Images [Representational Image]They scapegoat refugees, immigrant communities, and minorities. Truth is a frequent casualty. Nativism, xenophobia, racism, and Islamophobia are on the rise. The rising tide of populism in the name of a perceived majority has paralleled a new infatuation with strongman rule that was apparent particularly prominently during the US presidential election campaign. If all that matters are the declared interests of the majority, the thinking seems to go, why not embrace the autocrat who shows no qualms about asserting his “majoritarian” vision — self-serving as it may be — and subjugating those who disagree.Joshua Kurlantzick, a senior fellow for Southeast Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations, writing for The Washington Post, said: Populism’s continuing appeal should remind long-standing, mainstream political parties worldwide that the factors behind the populist wave are, if not universal, found in many different countries now. Furious voters may turn to populist outsiders who would shock political systems but not destroy them – or who could well demolish them.Either way, 2018 and 2019 will provide more reminders that populism is here to stay.Mukul Kesavan points out, majoritarianism is not simply Islamophobia – in India or Myanmar or anywhere else — Majoritarian politics results from the patiently constructed self-image of an aggrieved, besieged majority that believes itself to be long-suffering and refuses to suffer in silence anymore. The cultivation of this sense of injury is the necessary precondition for the lynchings, pogroms, and ethnic cleansing that invariably follow. When centrists like Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron were re-elected in Europe despite strong anti-immigration rhetoric, the world breathed a sigh of relief, but with Merkel now under pressure from her own allies in the national coalition on the same prickly issue of migration, the far right is making a staunch comeback.(To be Continued)last_img read more

first_imgThe closure comes after engineers found some major structural problems with a bridge on the ramp. TXDOT’S Danny Perez says a concrete slab popped up and was a hazard for drivers: “Definitely was not a condition for folks to travel on. So, as a precaution, we decided to close the road completely.” Perez explains what it will take to repair the bridge. “We’re demolishing that portion of the bridge, gonna put new concrete there. We’re actually gonna use these heavy duty cranes. We’re gonna lift that portion of the bridge to put it back into place where it had actually shifted out of place and that bridge will be fully functional and operational.” Unfortunately for commuters, the work will take several weeks.“The plan is to get it open by mid-January, but we’re hoping to get it open a lot sooner. So, we wanna make sure we’re getting that done. We know it’s a vital corridor for folks getting in and out of downtown”, says Perez. He explains that the damage was not caused by an accident or some other specific event. The AFRAM festival will take place Aug. 12 at The Bowl in Druid Hill Park. This year’s event has been significantly scaled back. In previous years, the free festival ran for two days in the parking lots between M&T Bank Stadium and Camden Yards with national artists such as Brandy, Chrisette Michelle, and Common headlining the festival which greeted over 35,000 revelers each summer. Mayor Catherine Pugh believes that scaling back the largest ethnic festival on the East Coast will help it return to its “original focus.”“Our hope is to restore the AFRAM Festival over time to its original core value of being the family-oriented, community resource event known for its good food, home-grown talent and wealth of information,” Pugh stated in a press release. This year’s one-day festival will include musical entertainment by local rappers YBS Skola and Tate Kobang. It will also include an Innovation Station for children. The Enoch Pratt Free Library’s mobile job center will also be parked there assisting the community with job training and employment opportunities.last_img read more

first_imgThe recent Snow Travel Expo in Sydney and Melbourne has revealed that the traditional perception of Switzerland being a ritzy winter holiday destination is shifting.Receiving and discussing travellers’ interest at the Expo were Director of Switzerland Tourism ANZ, Mark Wettstein and Head of Sales for Jungfrau Railways, Daniela Fuchs. Both have noticed that over the past few years, more and more Australians are realising the affordability of Switzerland for snow holidays and the abundance of activities and products on offer.“Switzerland offers a wide range of packages to suit different requirements including ski pass and accommodation combos; family deals; combined ski, accommodation and mountain railway passes and much more,” said Mark. “The aim of these offers is to ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness for holiday goers on all budgets. Both Mark and Daniela were impressed with the visitors over the last two weekends as many were already quite well informed and knew what they would like to see and experience in Switzerland.“Many of the visitors to our stand were interested in our Christmas markets; staying in traditional Swiss mountain huts to enjoy the extraordinary chalet-styled atmosphere; going on day excursions to visit smaller villages or even the cities (given the close proximities between the cities and mountains); and of course, the types of ski/snowboard experience they can expect,” said Mark. Some of the experiences on offer in the Jungfrau region include the opportunity to ski or snowboard at 2970m above sea level and ice-skate in Interlaken (the country’s adventure capital), snow shoeing, winter hikes and a host of other events.Visitors were advised that the best time to visit is during their low season in January, where they can take full advantage of the discounts and deals on offer. They were also reminded that children under 16 years of age travel for free on Swiss public transportation when accompanied with a guardian with a Swiss Travel Pass – a huge bonus for families visiting Switzerland.Switzerland is the birthplace of winter tourism, which began in 1864.Source = Switzerland Tourismlast_img read more

first_imgIn This Issue. * Draghi tells Greece to allow TROIKA in. * Faber says China to back renminbi with Gold! * Yen set for next leg down? * S$ gets caught up in yen weakness. And Now. Today’s A Pfennig For Your Thoughts. Phase 2 Of The Dollar’s Moon Shot. Good day.. And a Tom Terrific Tuesday to you! Uriah Heep and their song July Morning greets me this morning. It starts out soft and ends heavy duty, sort of like most of my mornings! Yesterday, never did get around to ending heavy duty, ending with a whimper, instead.  But today is a new day, new beginnings and all that, so I’ve got that going for me, eh? The dollar is not having anything to do with soft beginnings. The dollar went on a moon shot ride after the Jobs report on Friday and hasn’t looked back!  Even the currencies like rubles, and real that currently pay high interest rates are getting whacked. But think about this for a minute. I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating. IF and when the Fed does hike rates 25 Basis Points to bring their Fed Funds rate to .75%, the ruble will still have more than 16% in a positive differential, and the real will have more than $12% in a positive differential. How can 25 Basis Points be that big of a deal to these two?  Sure the 25 Basis Points rate hike does open Pandora’s Box of additional rate hikes, but for now this is where we are, and to me, that’s still a BIG IF the Fed hikes rates in June.  You know, the markets may be backing the Fed into a corner though. Yes, the markets could have positioned everything so dependent on a rate hike that the Fed will have no choice but to hike rates in June. I don’t think we’re there yet, but as long as the stock market doesn’t fall completely out of bed, and the 10-year Treasury doesn’t rise to 3%, things should hold for the Fed to back out of a rate hike in June, which I still believe they will do, at this point. Gold has also been whacked during this mission to the moon by the dollar, so there’s nothing out there folks, that even looks like it could buck this moon shot by the dollar. What’s an investor to do? Well, you could go to cash, but until rates really begin to run higher, banks are going to be slow to raise the deposit rates. Or at least that’s been their MO since the beginning of banking! But bonds are losing value, stocks are losing value, currencies are losing value and precious metals are losing value. YIKES! When you put that way, Chuck, deposit rates don’t sound all that bad. While you’re looking for deposit rates that appeal to you, don’t forget that EverBank has a yield pledge to remain in the Top 5% of Competitive Accounts. That way you don’t have to go “yield hopping”. for details see: https://everbank.com/banking/money-market OK. The Big News on the news wires this morning is that the Greeks have agreed to allow the TROIKA back into Greece to begin talks. Remember the TROIKA is the IMF, the European Central Bank (ECB), and the European Commission. Seems there was some confusion on the Greeks’ willingness to allow the TROIKA back into Greece, but when cornered the Greek PM said it was all a misunderstanding. Sure it was. I’m sure there was some political saber rattling going on there ahead of the meeting, which was going to take place all the time. Besides the selling in the euro from dollar buying, this Greek thing just continues to weigh on the euro.  The Eurozone needs to go on a diet, and drop 50 pounds, so they can be like Marie Osmond and say, “I’m Marie and I lost 50 pounds!”  Of course I’m saying that the 50 pounds in the Eurozone’s case would be Greece. Unfortunately for the Eurozone, that’s not going to happen, and so they need to just convince themselves that they need to go to the Big & Tall store. HA! Well, my currency of the month article that was in the Sunday Pfennig this past Sunday, didn’t get as many responses as the article on the pound the previous month. Although it did produce a quote that appeared on Google+ yesterday!  You know, the Indian rupee, the Currency of the Month, has the improving fundamentals  and good interest rate differential to dollars, euros, sterling and yen. But it has to prove it can maintain these fundamentals and that they aren’t just some flash in the pan stuff that India is known for. I highlight the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Rajan, and the PM Modi in the article and point out that even though they have done some wonderful things so far, the best thing to happen to India in a long time is the drop in the price of Oil. A dear reader did ask that the next Currency of the Month be the Singapore dollar (S$). Well, I can do that right here! The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) is Singapore’s Central Bank, and they decide the direction of the S$ by either widening or narrowing the trading band that the S$ can trade within. The MAS if famous for using the S$ to combat or promote inflation, and not interest rates like the rest of the world. Well, the MAS will meet in about a month, and while the markets may be looking at the MAS to widen the trading band, which would, at this point in the proceedings bring about more S$ weakness, but I’m going to go out on a limb here, no worries, I picked out a big strong limb to hold me, and say that the MAS will leave the trading band unchanged, but at their previous meeting to the one next month, the MAS indicated they were OK with S$ weakness, and in that time the S$ has dropped in value VS the dollar. Singapore is foremost an Asian export country, and the disease that the Japanese yen began spreading across Asia in the last two years, really took hold of the S$ in the past 6 months. Recall, I said back then that I feared what Japan had decided to do, which was really weaken the yen further, would eventually spill over to the rest of Asia, due to the fact that these Asian countries can’t let one country’s currency get out of whack while others remain strong, because of the competition for exports. Speaking of Japan. the yen just continues down the path of weak currencies that it began almost 2 years ago now..   The yen is within spitting distance of 122. We haven’t seen 122 in yen since 2007.  And before that 2002.. PM Abe, is still preaching about ending deflation and reviving the economy, so far his 3 arrows have missed the mark, and the economy is still in Neverland. Nevereconomy, nevercurrency strength, neverinflation. that’s where Japan is. And now that the markets believe there are no geopolitical problems out there ( I guess they are turning a blind eye toward ISIS, or the Chinese island grabbing in the S. Pacific, the Middle East tinderbox and more) they have taken that safe haven status from the yen. I look for yen to trade between 125 and 130 by the end of this year, and PM Abe will finally see what his economic reforms will do with a very weak yen. Aussie and N.Z. dollars (A$ and kiwi) are getting whacked, for the narrowing interest rate differential too. At least their respective differentials are smaller compared to rubles, real and rand.. There was a BIG scare in N.Z regarding their infant formula sector. There were rumors flying around that a poison was slipped into the formula.. And this has added to the kiwi weakness this morning. Dairy, wool and lumber, in New Zealand, folks. that’s the exports in a nutshell, so any problem with production of one of three is a BIG problem for New Zealand and kiwi. Once again, I ask the question, how long will it be before the sanctions on Russia are lifted? The sooner the better in my opinion, as the Russian and Eurozone economy is suffering due to the sanctions. Come on everyone let’s get going on this! As if the Brazilian real needed anything else to add to its misery, it does now. Brazilian Supreme Court ruled this past weekend that congressional members can be investigated, as there were challenges to one Senator for his involvement into Petroleo Brazil, BUT said that President Rousseff could not be investigated. And that’s who the investigators wanted!  So, political wrangling is causing the real some down to earth problems right now. The real has traded to a 2004 low this morning. YIKES! Tonight in China, both Zhous, Zhou Qiang, head of the Supreme People’s Court, and Zhou Xiaochuan, Gov. of the Peoples Bank of China (PBOC) will speak that the Chinese NPC. I expect to read quite a few good quotes from these two. That is if they get printed! China is still a Communist country, and although they’ve probably become more capitalistic that most capitalistic countries, deep down they are still Communist. which means they don’t have to print everything these guys say if they don’t want to, and nobody can make them! The renminbi / yuan ‘s trading has been reflective of the slowing down of the Chinese domestic economy. We saw yesterday that Chinese exports are attempting to pick up the slack from the domestic economy, but so far that’s not happened. Did you see that the well-respected analyst/ investor, Marc Faber said that  he believes that China is going to switch to a Gold backed currency, and that they will be able to do this because they have accumulated so much Gold, and that the markets don’t understand how much Gold the Chinese have accumulated.  That’s pretty cool, because that’s the same stuff I’ve been telling you for 4 years!  Shoot Rudy, maybe even 5 years. but I’ll stick with 4 for sure! The U.S. Data Cupboard only has the Wholesale Inventories for January to print today.  Tomorrow will be another day of nothing for the cupboard, but then on Thursday, we finally get back to real data, as Feb Retail Sales will print. You may recall that January’s Retail Sales fell -.8%, so it will be interesting to see if February can play catch up here. The BHI was very active in January, and that would indicate a recovery of sorts for Retail Sales..  Thursday I’ll be in St. Pete, but I’m sure I’ll remind you of this, and what the BHI indicates. Oh, and a dear reader sent me this email regarding my rant on the Jobs data yesterday: “of course the job creation # is true. There were thousands of kids out shoveling snow for $2. the Gov’t would never lie.”  HAHAHAHAHA! For What It’s Worth. It was fun seeing the guys at the DR. (Daily Reckoning www.darilyreckoning.com )  picked up some of the stuff I said about the jobs data in yesterday’s Pfennig, for the DR yesterday afternoon.  I always get a kick out of seeing my name up in the lights!   OK for today’s FWIW, I have a little ditty about the BRICS Development Bank and you can read the entire article here: http://rt.com/news/238981-putin-signs-brics-bank/ “Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law ratifying the deal establishing the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB), according to a document published on Monday on Russia’s official website for legal information. The BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) was set up to challenge two major Western-led giants – the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. NDB’s key role will be to serve as a pool of currency for infrastructure projects within a group of five countries with major emerging national economies – Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa. According to the Russian Finance Ministry, the New Development Bank is expected to start functioning fully by the end of the year, with the headquarters slated for opening in Shanghai. The chairmanship, with a term of five years, will rotate among the members.” Chuck again.. yes, this and more for the BRICS Development Bank (BDB)  as the Emerging Markets countries will now have an alternative source of funds in which to borrow going forward, and without the strings attached that the IMF and World Bank uses. this is one of the key reasons I put together the BRICS MarketSafe CD last year.  To recap. the dollar is still on its moon shot and hasn’t looked back since the jobs report on Friday morning. Even the “real positive interest rate differential currencies” of Russia and Brazil are getting sold, even though as Chuck points out, their positive rate differential will still be quite significant IF the Fed does hike rates in June. Gold gets whacked again, but Marc Faber says China is going to back the renminbi with Gold, something Chuck has told you for 4 years now.The Brazilian real is trading at a 2004 low, the euro is trading at a 2003 low, and so on, as currencies are all down since Friday. Currencies today 3/10/15. American Style: A$ .7635, kiwi .7280, C$ .7905, euro 1.0760, sterling 1.5070, Swiss $1.0070, . Well, I’ll be writing tomorrow from home base, then hitting the road for a 4 hour drive to the west side of the state. I really need to get to work on my presentation for the Conference. The first time the Butlers went to spring training, the Cardinals trained in St. Pete, at Al Lang field. It was even more cozy than their current home in Jupiter, Roger Dean Stadium. It has been standing room-packed the last two games, and all seats are sold the rest of March. My spring get-away has turned into ever Cardinals fan’s spring get-away! The rash that affected my hands two weeks ago, is back, and worse this time! UGH! We can’t figure out what’s causing this to happen. No biggie, just a stupid allergic reaction to something. The Red Sox brought their 2nd team players to town yesterday and still beat the Cardinals, as the Cardinals proved once again that they are too “left handed”.  Throw a senior citizen left handed pitcher out on the mound and he’ll beat the Cardinals! With one exception, you’ll have to ask Clayton Kershaw about that from the past two post seasons. The Blue Jays are playing their song: Maybe, on the iPod right now. This is from the Blue Jays only album, and features two Moody Blues members, Justin Hayward and John Lodge.  OK.. time to go. I hope you have a Tom Terrific Tuesday!Chuck Butler Managing Director EverBank Global Marketslast_img read more
