Sky’s the limit for McLeod – Graham

first_img PROBLEMS McLeod has recently run 9.99 seconds for the 100 metres, but Graham doesn’t believe the accelerated velocity will create problems. “All he has to do is fix his leg sometimes by not hitting the hurdle,” he suggested. “Once he’s clean, we’re going to see something fantastic soon, before even Rio”, Graham said, using hurdling terminology to describe a race when the athlete isn’t slowed down by contact with any of the 10 obstacles. More broadly, the experienced coach thinks that McLeod and Parchment could both win medals in the 110-metre hurdles at the Olympics. “Once Parchment gets his start, we could see Jamaica creating history – a quinela,” he predicted. “With Omar’s early speed, once Parchment gets his start, Jamaica is in for some good times in the hurdles,” he concluded. The early-season form of Omar McLeod has one of his former high-school coaches thinking about the world record. Raymond Graham, who coached McLeod in 2013 at Kingston College (KC), says McLeod’s early speed will help chase Aries Merritt’s four-year-old 110-metre hurdles record of 12.80 seconds. Graham also believes that McLeod and Hansle Parchment could make hurdling history for Jamaica at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Graham isn’t surprised by his former student’s early-season run of 13.08 seconds at the Drake Relays last weekend. “He is the first hurdler I’ve seen with so much speed, and when you have speed,” he explained, “you’re going to run fast”. The long-time coach believes McLeod was unlucky to hit the hurdles in last year’s World Championship final and said: “I think he will break the world record soon.” McLeod ran 12.97 seconds to beat Parchment, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, to win last year’s National Senior Championships. However, he struggled in the World Championships final where he placed sixth. Parchment peaked well at the Worlds to be runner-up to Russia’s Sergey Shubenkov. Graham isn’t the first to project world-record potential for McLeod. Just after McLeod’s Nationals wins, 1966 CAC silver medallist Ray Harvey said: “His form is immaculate, impeccable, but his speed is what really, I think, could propel him probably close to the world record.”last_img read more

first_imgEmbed from Getty ImagesMauricio Pochettino said he took off Heung-Min Son while he was on a hat-trick because the forward needed a rest.Son scored his second double in two games to sink Huddersfield 2-0 at Wembley and cement Tottenham’s place in the top four.“In the last few games he played a lot. He played one hour and scored twice against Rochdale on a very cold day,” the Spurs boss said.“Today he played another 70 minutes, and he’s not a machine, and he needs to rest. There are a lot of games ahead of him.“But he is one player you always expect amazing things from. He is talented, consistent and very professional.“Players like him and Harry Kane work a lot and it pays back. He’s another example at our club of what it means to be professional.”Pochettino’s side face Juventus next in a huge Champions League last-16 second leg at Wembley on Tuesday night. And he said: “I am happy for Son because these two goals help a very good position in the table now, and in the battle for the top four. It was a very professional performance from the team.“We are focused on Juventus now. With Chelsea, United still to play, cannot affect what happens in the other games.” Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebookby Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksRecommended for youAspireAbove.comRemember Pauley Perrette? Basketball player Carmelo Anthony says playing with Amar’e Stoudemire was “one of the reasons I wanted to come to New York.”Now that his Knicks teammate is struggling with another knee injury, Anthony is having a difficult time watching Stoudemire go through the agony of recovery.“As a friend, it’s hard for me to sit back and act like it doesn’t bother me because I know how hard of a worker he is [and] I know the time that he puts in the gym to train and rehab,” Anthony said Tuesday. “To see him go forward and then take some steps back every time, it’s just sad.”According to reports, Stoudemire will miss the Knicks’ first three preseason games. Stoudemire is rehabbing from knee surgery he received over the summer, his third in the past year.“I’m still getting stronger, still getting the legs strong enough to withstand the pressure of playing, but progress has been great so far,” Stoudemire said. The 11-year veteran only played 29 regular season games in 2012-13, when he also had two separate knee procedures. read more

first_imgResidents who escaped spoke of others trapped and screaming for help, with some holding children from windows and others jumping from upper floors. Some were reported to have attempted to use bin bags as makeshift parachutes.A witness, Samira Lamrani, told the British Press Association a baby was thrown from a 9th or 10th floor window and caught by a bystander.“The windows were slightly ajar — a woman was gesturing that she was about to throw her baby and if somebody could catch her baby,” Lamrani said, according to the BBC. “A gentleman ran forward and managed to grab the baby.”Lamrani said there were “endless numbers of people” trapped and “screaming for their lives.”One person, who did not want to be identified, told the British newspaper The Guardian, “I’m lucky to be alive — and lots of people have not got out of the building.”Police say it will take some time to confirm the cause of the fire, and authorities did not want to speculate on why it spread so rapidly, The Associated Press reports. As noon approached Wednesday, the building in the west London neighborhood of North Kensington was still smoldering and breaking out into flames. Volunteers were bringing sandwiches to people forced out of their homes; others donated supplies and money. The AP reports that the building had been viewed as a fire risk:“Local residents said they had warned local authorities about fire issues in the building, a public housing block built in 1974 and containing 120 homes, according to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.” ‘We’ve complained to council,’ said Edward Daffarn, 55, who said nothing had been done to improve safety. ‘I consider this mass murder.’ “On Twitter, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the fire was declared a major incident; he and other city officials are spreading information about how survivors and families can find one another or report someone missing.Copyright 2017 NPR. Matt Dunham/APFire and rescue crews are fighting a blaze and searching for people who may have been trapped in a 24-story apartment building in London that was engulfed in fire overnight. At least six people have died from the fire, which was not yet fully under control nearly 12 hours after it started.“These are very early stages and we do expect that figure to rise,” London’s Metropolitan Police said of the death toll. The blaze at Grenfell Tower was reported around 1 a.m. (8 p.m. ET Tuesday). Soon after, people nearby reported seeing smoke and flames shooting from its windows. Since then, more than 64 people have been taken to hospitals, and 20 are in critical care units, the London Ambulance Service says.“This is an unprecedented situation, with a major fire that has affected all floors of this 24 story building, from the second floor up,” said London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton.Cotton told reporters she’d never seen anything like the fire in her nearly 30 years as a firefighter.#GrenfellTower fire: Crowdfunding page raises more than £20,000 in just hours https://t.co/XBuimKyMLK pic.twitter.com/GX9zv4IVsi— Telegraph News (@TelegraphNews) June 14, 2017Up to 600 people may have been inside the building’s 120 apartments at the time the blaze broke out.Alex Ritson, reporting from London for NPR, says the blaze appeared to start on a lower floor of the building and spread with astonishing speed. “At its height, pretty much the entire building appear to be ablaze, with huge flames of several hundred feet running up the side of the tower,” he says. “Forty fire engines and around 200 firefighters went to the scene — but their equipment didn’t reach much beyond the 11th floor.“There are already disturbing reports emerging of the pipework in the building for a fire emergency being out of action,” Ritson says. “Also, the fire escape plan for the building told residents to stay in their apartments behind supposedly fire safe doors. Those who escaped the blaze were the ones who both woke up and ignored that advice.”Mickey Paramasivan, who took his children out of the building after he woke up and smelled smoke, told Ritson they made it out with just a few minutes to spare.“I sure would have been dead if I weren’t awake,” he said. “Five more minutes and that was us. That’s how close it was.”He described a perilous situation: “Only one fire escape to get down, and apparently that caught on fire,” he said. “And the fire alarm that was going off, that wouldn’t have woken no one up. It was as silent as it could be. … Someone’s got to be held responsible for this. It’s ridiculous.”Eyewitness accounts describe horrifying scenes of people who could not escape from the building. The Telegraph reports:Strangers rally to support survivors of the #GrenfellTower fire by offering food, clothing and somewhere to rest https://t.co/4jzAtqpwoN pic.twitter.com/secTyahG6e— The Sun (@TheSun) June 14, 2017 Sharelast_img read more
