first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The legendary mountain men and frontiersmen of early American history have long been admired for their independence, endurance, and wilderness skills. They are a symbol of freedom and self-reliance. Painter of the Wild West Frederic Remington said that the frontiersman was “untainted by the enfeebling influences of luxury and modern life” and author Washington Irving once said of the mountain man that “with his horse and his rifle, he is independent of the world, and spurns all its restraints.”Through the use of muzzle loading black powder rifles like the ones the frontiersman carried, a contemporary outdoorsman can still find a direct link to this mythic man of the American wilds.A muzzleloader is a firearm in which the projectile (bullet/shot) and the propellant (black powder) are loaded through the muzzle of the gun. A measured amount of gunpowder is first poured into the muzzle, then wadding and the projectile are inserted and packed down with a ramrod. A priming charge is then placed on the priming pan or a percussion cap is placed on the nipple, and the gun is ready to fire. Each time the gun is shot, it must be reloaded in the same manner.Lars Lutton, of Morgan County, is a muzzleloader enthusiast who has been shooting black powder rifles competitively since the early 1980s.“I was interested in muzzleloaders ever since I was a kid, watching Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone parading around with them on the television set,” Lutton said. “I like them because they are accurate, easy to operate, and relatively inexpensive to use. Part of the attraction is shooting old time guns and using old time technology. Flintlocks have been around for 300 years or more and percussion rifles started back in the early 1800s.”Lutton enjoys building his own guns and the personal connection he has with the weapons that he crafts.“Contemporary companies make components that are replicas of the original ones and you can construct almost the entire gun yourself. There are very few working parts and I build from components that I can mix and match. All you need to build a gun is a stock, lock, barrel, and a trigger mechanism. For shooting, everything is by hand. There are no cartridges involved. You have to hand load everything. You can cast your own bullets. The only thing that you have to buy is powder and caps and if you shoot flint, you don’t need caps,” Lutton said. “When Davy Crockett went to the Alamo he brought a flintlock because he knew he could find flint but didn’t know if he would be able to find any caps.”As his previous statements imply, part of what Lutton likes about making and shooting these guns is their simplicity. He also appreciates their deadly accuracy.“The mantra of muzzleloaders is ‘powder, patch, shoot.’ That is how the gun is loaded, simple as that, and if you screw that up and do it in any other order, it doesn’t work out so well,” Lars laughed. “You pour powder down the thing, load the bullet, fire it, and it goes off. These primitive firearms are as accurate as any other contemporary, modern rifle. Today, they have 1,000-yard shooting matches with muzzle loading black powder rifles. A common misconception is that flintlocks are inaccurate and take too long to fire, but if it’s properly tuned and you know your gun well, it is very fast and very accurate.”This sentiment is echoed in Carl P. Russell’s exhaustive book, Firearms, Traps, and Tools of the Mountain Men where he writes, “The touted accuracy of the long rifle is genuine and still demonstrated daily by muzzleloader devotees…the shorter, big bore rifles adopted by the mountain men also are accurate, and the muzzle-loading fraternity of today keeps that fact always before the eyes of the interested public.”Lutton does use these weapons for hunting, but he also takes them to muzzle loading shooting competitions across the state.“I hunt deer during muzzleloader season with old school primitive weapons and I have taken out my 16-gauge flintlock to turkey hunt several times,” Lars said. “When I first started shooting muzzleloaders competitively I would go to what are called ‘Rendezvous,’ which were period correct competitions and gatherings that featured frontier life and culture. They are much like Civil War reenactments. Everyone wore period clothing and lived in period correct accommodations like lodges and teepees. Anything modern had to be covered and hidden from sight. I ended up getting into frontier culture and lore because it allowed me to compete more regularly, but then I found out about these other muzzleloader clubs where you didn’t have to worry about period specific clothing and such. My Rendezvous period didn’t last too long. It was way too much work.”There are primitive weapons clubs across the state that routinely get together to practice, compete, and fraternize that were started several generations ago and whose members may still be the descendants of the club founders. Lutton belongs to one such club.“The one closest to my home that I belong to is Wolf Creek Cap Snappers in Chesterhill. We also shoot at a sister club in Lowell that is called Cat’s Creek Muzzleloading Club. The one in Chesterhill was started by one of the boys’ grandfathers in the early 1950s and most members are multi-generational, dating from the ‘50s. They hauled a building from Chesterhill in a hay wagon several miles down to a property that they own to make the clubhouse. One amusing club anecdote: the founder’s grandson — who shall remain anonymous — was once beaten in a shoot by his own mother with his own rifle,” Lutton said.Muzzleloader shooting competitions are diverse and colorful affairs where the shooting challenges are as unique as the clubs at which they are held.“There are ‘off-hand’ matches which are target shoots where the target is usually 25 yards away. Out at Wolf Creek and Cat’s Creek, targets are set at 30 yards. There’s what is called a ‘woods walk’ where you follow a trail through the woods and shoot at different targets at different distances and different difficulties. At ‘blanket shoots’ everyone brings a prize of a certain denomination that is usually associated with muzzleloading. The best shooters with the best scores get first choice and you choose in descending order, but everyone gets something. Usually the dubious prize keeps showing up competition after competition.”“There are also what are called novelty matches. You go around to different clubs and each has their own novelty matches and challenges. Almost everyone has some that are peculiar to their club and have often been passed down for generations. There’s the ‘outhouse door,’ where you sit on an outhouse toilet seat, call pull, the outhouse door opens and you shoot at some target that can be pretty far away. You only have so much time to draw and shoot before the door closes on you. There is another one called the ‘rattle box’ where you are shooting at small targets at different distances. A rattling timer is placed next to the shooter — a ball bearing is dropped into a vertical maze that eventually comes out of the bottom and hits a bell that times the shooter out. We shoot at crossed strings at 25 yards and try to break both strings with one shot, or shoot at playing cards with the edge facing the shooter, trying to shoot it in half. We shoot all kinds of things — eggs, charcoal, poker chips, lollipops.”Despite the competitive fun and intrigue of muzzle-loading shooting sports and the rich historical legacy embodied by primitive black powder weaponry, interest in them is waning. Lutton knows he may well be a member of a dying breed.“There is a dwindling of interest in the sport and membership numbers in the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association (NMLRA) are down. It’s mostly an age thing. The membership is dying off and there are very few young people taking it up; but that’s true for all shooting sports—they’re in decline, as is hunting in general,” he said. This is an unfortunate truth in our nation, a sign of the disappearing appreciation for that heritage. Author Wallace Stegner once commented that the “wilderness idea” in America is “something that has helped form our character and that has certainly shaped our history as a people…something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed.” And while Stegner is referring to the literal, physical wilderness of our nation, it is equally true that vestiges and artifacts of that wilderness frontier, crucial to the forming of the American democracy, like the black powder muzzle loading rifle, are important to preserve, promote, and celebrate for their great historical and cultural value.last_img read more

first_imgYour engineering team has spent weeks working on the design of the latest product concept.  The concept design has been made using high-end CAD modeling tools that allow sophisticated 3D renderings.  The problem now is how to share the new design with the rest of the enterprise.  How can the concept design model be distributed for comment without requiring the original expensive authoring application be installed on everyone’s desk that may want to take a look at the current product direction?Screenshots.  A live presentation or webinar.  These are some workarounds to disseminate the data, but they don’t offer any degree of interactivity for controlling how the model is to be visualized. The problem gets more complex in larger organizations where different groups have adopted different sets of authoring tools.  In those cases, sharing files and data for collaboration is limited because people may have access to data files but they don’t have access to the authoring application to view them.Another problem associated with complex authoring applications is that these feature-rich tools often require highly trained users.  These kinds of applications are often not very approachable by casual users or those who may just need to view an existing data model.  In these cases, even if the application is available to a user, it may not be of much use.A better solution is to use a Universal Viewer.  A Universal Viewer is a single low-cost application that presents a consistent and easy-to-use interface for viewing most commonly used file formats. In collaboration with Spicer, Formtek has created the Formtek View application.  View is a true Universal Viewer that is web-based.  It is able to view most CAD, graphics and Office documents.  In all, more than 200 file formats are supported.  View’s tight integration with the Formtek | Orion data repository allows an organization to tightly secure and correctly disseminate documents and files on an Intranet or the Internet; and across the enterprise and with partners.Universal viewing with Formtek | View is cost-effective and convenient.  Web-based access allows users access from any networked client without a requirement for having supporting applications already installed on the workstation where the data is viewed.Formtek | View is very flexible and customizable.  View comes with an out-of-the-box configuration using high-frequency industry-standard viewing operations that are called out for use from an easy-to-access toolbar.  The core of View is a set of programmable ActiveX components.  By changing the usage of the ActiveX components, it’s possible to fairly easily customize your own viewer application, exposing the operations most commonly needed for your business processes.teen pornolast_img read more

first_imgAn Assam-based NGO specialising in child rights has warned of the psychological impact of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) on children and asked the authorities not to treat them as “collateral damage” from the expensive exercise. The final NRC is scheduled to be published on August 31. There are fears that at least 20 lakh people – many of them children – would be labelled foreigners after being excluded from the list. The Universal Team for Social Action and Help (UTSAH) took to social media to remind the government of the need to honour India’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.“We support NRC as a local organisation, but a violation of children’s rights cannot be treated as collateral damage acceptable in pursuit of an exercise deemed to be in national interest. The government should ensure the protection of children from all forms of physical and psychological abuse without discrimination of any kind,” Utsah executive director Miguel Das Queah said.Fact-finding panelHe said his NGO would constitute a fact-finding committee after the publication of the final NRC list and suggest rectification if any violation of children’s rights was found. In a 2018 report, Amnesty International said there were 31 children in Assam’s detention centres for declared foreigners and some of them had come of age in captivity without access to counselling. The report said that girls were allowed to stay with their mothers while boys above the age of six were sent out of the centres. “Although this takes them out of the confines of the prison, often there is no one willing to take responsibility for them,” it said.A 2018 National Human Rights Commission report on Assam’s detention centres underlined the need for caring and protecting children of “foreigners” in detention camps under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.The National Campaign Against Torture too had found out that “children are the worst victims of mental torture” in the NRC process. “They are witness to the mental trauma of their parents and bear the brunt of their parents’ frustrations. India’s denial of citizenship to children born after 2004 is a violation of Article 7 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child relating to the right of nationality,” its report said.On August 13, the Supreme Court said that children born after December 3, 2004 were not eligible to be included in the NRC if any of the parents was a doubtful voter, a declared foreigner or with cases pending at a Foreigners’ Tribunals.last_img read more

first_imgEditor’s note: This is the fifth in a 15-part series in which we preview college football’s top teams. We’ll be counting down from 15 to one, with the final team, released on Sept. 3 – the day college football starts – serving as our national title pick. 11. Clemson TigersThe Clemson Tigers are a trendy pick to win the ACC this year, despite the fact that Florida State is the three-time defending conference champion. Clemson has won at least 10 games in each of the past four seasons, and many believe that if star quarterback Deshaun Watson can stay healthy all year, the Tigers will have a legitimate shot at taking the next step and competing for a national championship. The program finished on a high note in 2014, blowing out Oklahoma, 40-6, in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Can they keep it rolling into 2015?Clemson kicked off practice just a few days ago. The Irish and Tigers are both considered national title hopefuls, and assuming both have unblemished records heading into the contest, the winner is going to have a leg up for the College Football Playoff rankings. Notre Dame’s defense struggled down the stretch last year, and assuming Watson is still on the field for the Tigers, they’ll have a decent shot at knocking off the historic program. It’ll also be interesting to see how new Fighting Irish starter Malik Zaire deals with Clemson’s likely-formidable secondary. Nov. 7 vs. Florida StateFor as successful as Clemson has been over the past three years, the Tigers still haven’t been able to crack Florida State. In 2015, former Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston (who went No. 1 overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) is gone, and the Seminoles will (most likely) rely on Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson to lead the charge. That being said, Clemson lost at home last year, 23-17, with FSU sporting backup Sean Maguire. If Clemson wants to get serious about finding itself in the College Football Playoff, they’ll have to take care of the Seminoles to get there.Nov. 28 at South CarolinaYes, Clemson vs. South Carolina is still just a non-conference game. But even if both schools were 0-11 heading into it, it would still be the most important contest on the schedule. The in-state rivalry between the two, now dubbed The Palmetto Bowl, is one of the best in the sport. The war of words between Dabo Swinney and Steve Spurrier isn’t too bad, either.Key PlayersDeshaun Watson, sophomore quarterbackWatson had a very bizarre freshman season. Back in April, he broke his collarbone. He started the season as the backup to Cole Stoudt, and after performing very well against Florida State in relief, he was named the team’s starter. A few weeks later, he broke his finger against Louisville and was out of action until mid-November. In returning against Georgia Tech, he tore his ACL. After sitting out against Georgia State, he returned for the team’s rivalry game with South Carolina, and led the Tigers to victory, despite the injury. He then shut it down, opting to have surgery instead of playing against Oklahoma. Got all that? When Watson was on the field, Clemson was a much more efficient team. He threw for 1,466 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions in limited work. He also rushed for 200 yards on 63 attempts. He’s a player single-handedly capable of winning Clemson the conference title. But can he stay healthy?I knew my time was coming, I just had to wait for it. So every night I prayed for opportunities like this. Time to go LIVE it! #WishMeWell— Deshaun Watson (@ShaunWatson4) August 4, 2015Shaq Lawson, junior defensive endClemson boasted one of the country’s top defenses in 2014, but ahead of the 2015 campaign, the Tigers will have to replace eight starters. Lawson, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound stud defensive end, should help to ease that burden. He’s one of the best at his position in the ACC. If the Tigers are going to hang their hat on defense again this year, he’ll have to be a menace.Lawson was a Freshman All-American in 2013, and last year, he recorded 44 tackles, including 11 for loss. If he’s able to continue improving, he’ll be one of the most feared players in the country. It’s time to seperate the good from the great. Until January social media… It’s time to go to work boys.— Shaq Lawson (@Shaq_Lawson90) August 4, 2015Wayne Gallman, sophomore running backDespite winning 10 games in 2014, Clemson struggled running the football. In fact, the Tigers finished 81st in rushing offense, averaging just 3.5 yards per attempt. Much of that was because Cole Stoudt, who isn’t an overly athletic signal-caller, was on the field a good portion of the year. But the team’s running backs didn’t put up staggering numbers either. The longest run from scrimmage was only 34 yards – by Wayne Gallman. Gallman, who led the team in both carries (161) and yards (769) last season, will need to improve in his sophomore year. Clemson will need to have a strong running game to compete this year – especially if Watson ever catches the injury bug again.twitter see yall in January. #doakseason pic.twitter.com/6iFngorvX8— Wayne Gallman II (@Wanye_Kanye) August 4, 2015 Why They Can Win The National TitleClemson returns just 11 starters from last year’s team, so it’s possible that the Tigers are a year or two away from competing for a national championship. The squad may not have the defense it had a year ago, given the departures of Vic Beasley, Stephone Anthony and Tony Steward, but head coach Dabo Swinney does seem to have confidence in this year’s unit. If he’s right, Clemson will be formidable. The other major factor, obviously, is Watson’s health. If he can stay on the field, Clemson will be very difficult to stop. But the second he’s sidelined, the Tigers will either be relying on junior Nick Schuessler, who has attempted 10 passes in his career, or a true freshman with zero experience. Every time Watson goes down, Tigers fans will collectively be holding their breath.Regardless, Clemson’s program seems to be in a good place. If everything falls right in 2015, the Tigers could have a special year.Yesterday: No. 12 LSU; up tomorrow: No. 10 Florida Statelast_img read more

They were firmly out of the playoff picture. Top-line center Patrice Bergeron and his linemate Brad Marchand had both missed time with injuries. So had second-line center David Krejci. Goalie Tuukka Rask was a husk of his former self, and looked for a moment as though he might lose his starting job. Matt Beleskey, who the Bruins decided to pay $19 million because he had a handful of good weeks during the spring of 2015, had been placed on waivers.1He cleared them and now plays for Boston’s AHL affiliate in Providence. This was a team that had won the Presidents’ Trophy as recently as 2013-14, and that had a core made up of several skaters who’d played in two of the past seven Stanley Cup Finals. This was also a team that had failed to qualify for two of the past three postseasons, and that hadn’t won a playoff series since they beat the Detroit Red Wings in the spring of 2014.But since a loss to the Washington Capitals in mid-December, the Bruins have been damn near untouchable: They are 14-0-4 in their last 18 games. The Bruins looked like basement dwellers a few months ago, and now pundits are wondering whether they’re legitimate Stanley Cup contenders. But are they for real, or is this streak just a tantalizing aberration? The Bruins are a balanced hockey team — seven skaters have at least 25 points — but much of their recent form can be attributed to the extraordinary play of a rejuvenated Rask and the top line of Bergeron, Marchand, and David Pastrnak, which has established itself as one of the best in the NHL.In his last 18 starts, Rask has lost exactly zero games in regulation; in his prior 13 starts, he had won just three. During his recent dominant stretch, Rask has stopped 94 percent of the shots he’s faced; during his disastrous stretch, he stopped just under 90 percent of the shots he faced.2Not what you’d expect from the NHL’s all-time leader in save percentage.Goaltender play is notoriously unstable, so these gulfs in Rask’s performance aren’t actually as shocking as they seem on the surface. Even if Rask’s save percentage regresses and he stops roughly 92 percent of the shots he faces for the rest of the season, the Bruins will be in good shape. To explain the dominance of Marchand, Bergeron, and Pastrnak, the best place to start is their possession numbers. Bergeron is yet again among the league’s elite faceoff takers, winning more than 57 percent of his draws.3That number drops a bit to roughly 53 percent on power play draws, but Bergeron can be forgiven — unless he’s the man in the penalty box, teams often task their best faceoff man with taking draws on the penalty kill. Among qualifying skaters, all three on Boston’s top line rank in the top 50 in Corsi percentage,4Adjusted for score, zone and venue. which estimates a player’s possession rate by measuring the percentage of shot attempts directed at his opponent’s net versus his own net while he’s on the ice. And because the Bruins’ top troika are sending so many shots toward their opponents’ nets, all three also rank in the top 15 for goals per 60 minutes.Among lines that qualify, only 11 others in the NHL have a higher combined shooting percentage than the combination of Marchand, Bergeron, and Pastrnak. And their goals for percentage — which takes the total number of goals scored while a line is on the ice together and calculates the percentage of those goals that were goals scored by the line — is by far the best in the league. Marchessault321666.7 None of this is to say the Bruins are a one-line team — they’re far from it. Rookie forwards Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk have already chipped in with 11 goals each, and rookie defenseman Charlie McAvoy5McAvoy recently underwent minor surgery to correct an abnormal heart rhythm, but is expected to return in two weeks. is building a solid case for the Calder Memorial Trophy. And David Krejci is a pretty decent second line center, too: He’s scored 24 points in 29 games, and he’s winning 56.3 percent of his faceoffs, by far the best mark of his career.Boston will lose in regulation again — Marchand, who is serving a five-game suspension, and McAvoy’s temporary absences should ensure this happens sooner than later. But there’s nothing in recent memory suggesting Boston’s top line will cease to be a possession beast any time soon.6All three forwards finished in the top ten in Corsi percentage in 2016-17. If they keep getting (and burying) their chances — and if Rask’s ascendancy holds up, which his dazzling career implies it might — the Bruins might find themselves playing hockey in June again. read more
