The teams tied, 1-1.Credit: Kelly Roderick / For The LanternFreshman goalie Matt Tomkins returned to the lineup as the Ohio State men’s hockey team took four points from a weekend series against Michigan State.Tomkins, who sustained an injury during a 6-1 victory against Niagara Nov. 9, tallied 59 saves over the two games as OSU (11-6-1, 1-2-1) earned its first-ever points in the Big Ten play.A season-high crowd of more than 8,000 Saturday saw the Spartans ride an early lead all the way into the third period, only for the Buckeyes’ junior forward Darik Angeli to score midway through the final stanza.Neither team could find the winning goal in the final minutes or in the overtime period. The shootout ended 3-2 in favor of Michigan State, as Angeli was stopped by sophomore goalie Jake Hildebrand, giving the Spartans (6-10-3, 0-2-2) the extra point in the Big Ten conference standings.Friday night’s game saw the Buckeyes — who are tied for second in the Big Ten in goals per game with 3.25 — continue their strong attacking in a 5-3 victory. Leading the charge was junior forward Ryan Dzingel, whose three goals, to go along with an assist on a goal by junior forward Nick Oddo, extend his streak of games with at least a point to 10.Dzingel credited the play of his two linemates, Oddo and freshman forward Nick Schilkey, as the key to his recent success.“I feel like our line has been clicking and we know where each other are on the ice,” Dzingel said. “I enjoy playing with these guys and I was just fortunate enough to get a couple goals.”Michigan State coach Tom Anastos said after Friday’s game his team “had to be better” in the defensive zone.“I thought it was a big difference in our game because (defense is) really part of our identity,” Anastos said. “That’s the expectations we have, so that was much more in alignment with how we should be playing all the time.”The Buckeyes are scheduled to play against Big Ten opponents for the rest of the regular season. Coach Steve Rohlik said the competitive nature of the two games against Michigan State is something that will be repeated ad nauseam in the Big Ten.“It’s going to be a broken record every weekend,” Rohlik said. “It’s going to make our players better and it’s going to make us (as) coaches better.”Next up for the Buckeyes is a trip to Minneapolis for two games against No. 1 Minnesota. Their first game against the Gophers is outdoors at TCF Bank Stadium, home of Minnesota’s football team. Puck drop for the game is set for 9 p.m. Friday. read more

Credit: Jack Westerheide | Photo EditorInjuries go hand in hand with athletics. Athletes in all sports have to constantly manage them, even if not recovering from injuries, taking the necessary steps to prevent injuries from taking place. Therefore, in order to fully understand sports at Ohio State, it is important to consider the health of the athletes and the people in charge of ensuring an athlete’s safety. Athletic trainers are an ostensibly underappreciated yet critical component to the Ohio State Department of Athletics.Currently, Ohio State staffs approximately 19 athletic trainers, eight interns and two physical therapists. There are also 10 team physicians, four sports medicine fellows, four nutritionists,  several sports psychologists, a dentist and a pharmacist, all of whom collaborate with the athletic trainers. Throughout each season for the sports, an athletic trainer will constantly need to be on site, whether it be at practice or during a game, to be there should something go wrong. Katie Walker, an athletic trainer who specializes in tennis and women’s soccer, stressed just how different the experience is for every trainer based on the injury-risk of the sport.“Soccer, obviously, is a higher-risk sport, from an acute contact injury standpoint,” Walker said. “So with soccer I’m really dialed into what’s going on in the play; people going up for headers, sliding into people.” Walker added that keying in and evaluating an athlete’s current condition while simultaneously judging how an injury impacts the athlete’s play is a necessary skill for an athletic trainer. For example, tennis players would be assessed on their form and their swinging technique in order to see how an injury might be affecting performance. In fact, the process of guiding an athlete through an injury is one of the primary  responsibilities  for any athletic trainer.“Once you start to know your athletes and know their personalities and have treated them through so many injuries, it just becomes fun to watch people you know and to watch people who you helped get back on the court or back on the soccer field,” Walker said. “And that’s really where the enjoyment for athletic training comes from.”Walker said there are multiple steps to addressing an injury during a game. The first action the protocol calls for is evaluating if the injury is major or is a high-risk type of injury. If the injured player is physically capable of moving himself or herself to the sideline, the trainer will move the athlete to the sideline and further evaluate the injury with the available team physician. Treatment such as ice or taping then might be applied on the field to reduce recovery time. After the game, more in-depth treatment like crutches or walking boots would be applied in the athletic training facilities. Documentation is the final step, as all athletic trainers must report any sort of injury into their computer medical database. Preventing injuries is another key component to an athletic trainer’s arsenal. The term “prehab” is used among athletic trainers  to describe preventing future injuries with players who are currently rehabbing. Walker said prehab consists of working with strength and conditioning coaches to incorporate exercises that focus on building muscle in areas with high-risk injuries, such as ACLs and shoulders. Athletic training also relies heavily on being updated with equipment and technology. Like any medical field, having the best techniques and technology allows for quicker recovery and eases an athletic trainer’s job.Women’s soccer uses Polar Team Pro heart rate and GPS monitors in order to track cardiovascular and muscle stress.  Another technology utilized is Omegawave, which is a system of electrodes that calculate changes in heart rate, which aids with recovery. Omegawave can also highlight any cardiovascular discrepancies that might impact an athlete’s ability to play.Other techniques and equipment are vastly improving and the idea of unique improvements to the athletic training field is being constantly recognized every year. The concept of athletic training is much more than simply concussion protocols and taping ankles. Although they might not be starring in any of the hype videos or postgame interviews, the athletic training staff are essential for keeping Ohio State’s athletes continually performing at high levels. read more

Governor Mike Dunleavy’s request to extend the disaster assistance registration period for individuals or households impacted by the November 30th Cook Inlet Earthquake has been approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享The Alaska Senate today unanimously approved funding to aid communities impacted by the November 30 Southcentral earthquake. The extension means survivors now have until May 31, to submit their application to FEMA or the Small Business Administration. The initial registration period would have ended on April 1.center_img Governor Dunleavy: “The spring thaw may uncover earthquake damage to southcentral homes that had previously gone undetected, or will be exacerbated by thawing ground. The extension gives property owners time to look for new or hidden damage, apply for federal disaster assistance, make the necessary repairs and get their lives back in order. first_imgSo, how do you get in on the game and win? Here, some guidelines to make the most of your Webinar:1. Build in sufficient lead time. Promoting your Webinar well in advance can create opportunities for viral marketing and additional registrations. Remind the sponsor to promote it to their own client and prospect list.2. Provide lots of promotional opportunities for pre-, post- and live exposure such as:• Linked logos in outbound e-mail efforts (starting six weeks before event)• Branded registration, log-in pages and opening slide for Webinar• Branded registration confirmation e-mail• Logo and sponsor message with 60-second voiceover at beginning of Webinar and/or a short demo at the end of the webinar• Logo and link in final slide of Webinar• Opt-in checkbox for those who want to receive sponsor’s e-newsletters• Access to the registration list3. Create customized content. Webinar registration forms, for example, can provide sponsors with custom-created questions about demographics and decision-making ability, enabling them to target promotions specifically to the audience. 4. Allow downloading opportunities. You’ll get attendees by offering a login and password for a downloadable handout. At a Webinar I recently produced and conducted, the downloaded handouts comprised 25 percent more than the attendee rate, which translates into greater ROI for the sponsor. It also  indicated that several people were watching the Webinar on a single computer.5. When it’s over, archive your Webinar. You’ll get additional viewers, giving sponsors more exposure and longer-lasting bang for their buck. Send monthly reminder e-mails to both registered non-participants and to non-registered audience. Naturally, each reminder should include the sponsor’s link and promotional message.6. Let your sponsor help spread the success. Testimonials and statistics from satisfied sponsors help sell other advertisers on the marketing advantages of Webinars. 7. Take advantage of SEO marketing. Write your promotion copy to be search-engine friendly, incorporating key-words to help Google and Yahoo find you. Get other online media to post your press release on their Web site to multiply your visibility on the search engines.Helen Berman is president of Berman Media Sales Institute. Forced to cut budgets in a crisis economy, smart marketers are turning to selling products and services via Webinars. Because they offer educational content without the hassle and cost of live seminars, Webinars are popular with both attendees and marketers who want to bring in new clients, lessen attrition and build market share. As ad pages and show attendance dwindles, Webinar sponsorships are a win all around. What’s more, publishing, online and event companies are ideal Webinar producers. They reach a loyal  audience, add journalistic credibility and offer sponsors numerous promotional opportunities. Depending on company policies, advertisers can choose to control, contribute to, or simply sponsor a relevant Webinar. They can also choose a solo sponsorship or join with other noncompetitive advertisers to sponsor a Webinar. Either way, advertisers reach thousands of targeted, involved viewers with relevant and comprehensive information. Yielding strong results with less time and marketing effort, sponsorships  have been a hit with corporate marketers. According to a study by sponsorship marketing firm  Performance Research for IEG, Inc., “the average share of overall marketing budgets captured by sponsors has hit a record high of 19.5 percent [of marketing dollars].” A recent Forrest Research and Marketing Professionals study adds: “Webinars are considered one of the top three lead-generating tactics.” One recent Webinar sponsor I spoke with recognized the strong match between its product, Webinar topic, and audience the media company delivers. He described the event as a “grand slam”—the most successful provider of qualified leads and the best ROI marketing effort in months. Adding to these measurable benefits, the company recognized the branding opportunity and positioning of the company as a “thought leader.” last_img read more

first_img Now playing: Watch this: Share your voice 2 Comments The world’s fastest wireless data network is coming soon to the world’s fastest city. In 2018, New York City asked three companies—Neutral Connect Networks, Fiberless Networks, and Edge Fibernet—to experiment with 5G on Governors Island Park. Over months of testing a diverse spectrum of technologies, city officials have learned that deploying 5G will be challenging, but the benefits are significant. 5G Here’s how New York City is testing 5G 3:43 Tags Internet The 5G test is a part of the city’s NYCx moonshot challenge program that began in late-2017 and ran through much of 2018. The initiative encourages collaboration between public officials, technology firms, academics and nonprofits. Governors Island Park is situated on a small island between Manhattan and Brooklyn. The island’s rolling hills and historic monuments make it an ideal testing ground for next-gen wireless tech, said Jeremy Goldberg, the city’s deputy CTO and the managing director of NYCx.The NYCx team looked at Governors Island to learn about the constraints of connectivity, and as a testbed for several use cases, said Goldberg. To understand how 5G could benefit New Yorkers the city wanted to stress- test the network, clock upload and download speeds, and tally the number of people that can access the network at any given point and time. The 5G challenge is part of the city’s broader digital transformation strategy designed to encourage “growth, equity, sustainability, and resilience,” said Goldberg. The CTO’s department is focused on keeping all New Yorkers at the center of technology. He emphasized that to reach its “transformative” potential 5G needs to be affordable, accessible and practical for all New Yorkers. City officials hope the NYCx connectivity challenge will encourage entrepreneurship and serve as “a model for learning and for insights not just for the city’s purposes … but for entrepreneurs, for academics, for nonprofits and others that are developing really unique AR and VR applications, internet of things solutions, smart sensing and other [technologies].”last_img read more

first_img Share As part of an initiative to bring the library to more people, the Houston Public Library has launched a new way for people to check out and return books on the go: vending machines.Officially known as BookLink, the first two book vending machines were opened this week in downtown Houston — one is located in One Allen Center next to Amille’s Coffee and the other is in the food court at The Shops at Houston Center.   “We just are so excited that we’re bringing this service to Houstonians where it can be more convenient for them to interact with the library,” said Rhea Lawson, Executive Director of the Houston Public Library. “All you need is a library card.”The machines are simple to use. Users scan their library cards, enter their PIN, and open the door to select the books they want. After the door is shut, the machine runs inventory to determine what’s been checked out. Users then have the option to print a receipt showing what they’ve borrowed and when it’s due.The machines are also equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot.Lawson says the machines are part of the library’s HPL Everywhere initiative to provide library services in locations throughout the city.“We believe that the library should be everywhere, and we’re trying to try different opportunities, or provide different opportunities, for people to interact with us,” she said. The next book vending machine will be placed at Discovery Green. first_imgEach individual was randomly given either a testosterone-boosting medication or a placebo and was assigned to a task designed to measure aggression. The men were told they would be playing a computer game against a player who was in another room. (The player was actually fictitious.) In the game, participants received points that they could exchange for money at the end of the task. They had to press a key 100 times to earn a single point worth 50 cents. Throughout the game, the computer screen would signal that the player had lost a point, indicating that the other, unseen player had stolen a point from them. In response, the men could either continue earning points by pressing the key, press a different “protect” key to safeguard their points for a variable amount of time, or press a third “steal” key to take a point away from the other player. One of the key targets in a new study is testosterone — although people often link the hormone with aggressive behavior, there is limited evidence to back that popular notion. To explore the relationship further, an international research team led by Shawn N. Geniole at the University of Vienna decided to investigate the neurobiological aspects of aggression and personality in men. Their findings are reported in Psychological Science. The scientists recruited men ages 18 to 40 for the study. The 322 participants completed personality questionnaires. Geniole’s team used the responses to develop a personality-risk score for each participant, with higher scores indicating greater dominance, less self-control, and more focus on their own needs and preferences. The participants provided saliva samples that the researchers used to determine baseline testosterone concentration; they also provided mouthwash samples that were used to extract DNA. Researchers have begun to investigate whether hormonal and genetic factors, when combined with certain personality traits, have something to do with aggressive behavior. This research did not look at behavior beyond the aggressive behavior shown in the experimental task. But the findings raise the possibility that the men who have a fiery interaction of testosterone, personality, and a certain genetic feature are the same guys who cut you off in traffic and speed through red lights. If the results hold up in real-world scenarios, scientists may someday be able to use a blend biological and psychological measures to identify people at greatest risk for dangerous driving. Some of the participants were told they would not get to keep the points they stole. In other words, they would only be able to reduce the other player’s earnings but would reap no financial benefit as a result. Previous research using this experimental approach has shown that people who self-report as aggressive tend to steal more points compared with less-aggressive individuals.   Geniole and colleagues suspect that the combination of testosterone, high personality risk, and a certain genetic trait combine to increase aggression, in part by increasing activity in reward-related regions of the brain. The researchers are interested in expanding on these findings by looking at other anger-related brain responses and investigating whether the effects are similar in women. For many people, driving seems to provide an outlet for their most pugnacious tendencies. They’re the people who cut you off, flash their headlights and honk, and recklessly weave in and out of traffic at high speed. And they’re a danger. The American Automobile Association recently estimated that 56% of car accidents result from aggressive driving. Reference Are these drivers simply more easily provoked by congested roads, or are they more prone to risk-taking? Could biology be at play? Results showed that men with higher personality-risk scores (suggesting high dominance and low self-control) were more vulnerable to the aggression-inducing effects of testosterone than were men with lower risk scores. But the testosterone effects seemed especially potent for men with a specific characteristic in the androgen receptor (AR) gene, which directs the development of male sexual characteristics. Additionally, these men reported experiencing more pleasure (but less anger) in the game. Next, the participants filled out a questionnaire rating the extent to which stealing points felt good and the level of anger they felt when their partner stole their points. The researchers then collected a second round of testosterone and DNA samples. Geniole, S. N., Procyshyn, T. L., Marley, N., Ortiz, T. L., Bird, B. M., Marcellus, A. L., … Carré, J. M. (2019).
