first_img10 December 2010 South Africa’s new national space agency will coordinate the country’s major space projects, promote space science research, develop related engineering and technological capacity, and devise and implement a national space programme. South Africa has some of the best space infrastructure in Africa, and is already heading some notable space projects, including Africa’s bid to host the Square Kilometre Array, the Southern African Large Telescope, and the SumbandilaSat satellite. The South African Space Agency (Sansa) will become the umbrella body that coordinates all these projects, while integrating the country’s existing science and technology institutions, such as the Satellite Applications Centre run by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research at Hartebeesthoek, west of Pretoria.Space industry ‘big business’ Speaking at the launch of the agency and the National Space Strategy in Johannesburg on Thursday, Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor said the space industry had enormous potential for growth. Space science and technology were significant contributors to sustainable development on the African continent, and the South African Space Agency had a crucial role to play in this, Pandor said. Growing South Africa’s space capabilities would not only be of huge value to the scientific community in the southern African region, but would also help in addressing the challenges of health care provision, water resources, agricultural mapping, and urban planning and communications. The South African Space Agency would help develop a formal space programme over the next five years, Pandor said. It will promote research in the areas of astronomy, earth observation, communications, navigation and space physics, while growing scientific, engineering and technological competencies through human capital development and outreach programmes.Boosting South Africa’s international profile The agency will also promote cooperation on space-related projects between South Africa and the international community, with an eye to fast-tracking South Africa’s role in international space activities. At Thursday’s launch, Sansa signed memorandums of understanding relating to data access with Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research and the China Centre for Resources Satellite Data and Application. According to the International Astronautical Federation, there are about 74 companies that trade in the aerospace and defence sector in South Africa. The federation will hold its 62nd International Astronautical Congress in Cape Town in October 2011 – the first time the event will take place on African soil. In September, the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town was chosen to host the International Astronomical Union’s Office for Astronomy Development, which will play a key role in taking astronomy to the developing world. South Africa beat about 20 countries in its bid to host the office, which will play a central role in coordinating and managing International Astronomical Union educational activities, as well as in recruiting and mobilising volunteers. first_imgTop seed Somdev Devvarman assured India at least a silver medal in the tennis competition of the Commonwealth Games by storming into the men’s singles final with a straight set win over Australia’s Matthew Ebden here today.Somdev, ranked 97th, outplayed third seed and world number 165 Ebden, 6-3 6-1 in one hour and 11 minutes in the men’s singles semifinals at the Centre Court of the R K Khanna Tennis stadium. His next opponent will also be an Australian as the other semifinal is an all-Australian affair between second seed Peter Luczak and fifth seed Greg Jones.Unlike the previous matches, the semifinal featured long rallies but Somdev had strong enough legs and stamina to outlast his opponent.Ebden was coming into this match after playing an energy-sapping three-setter against British Joshua Goodall and perhaps had not recovered from the gruelling encounter.Nevertheless, he did pose some questions for Somdev but the Indian was equipped with enough answers. The match never rose to expected highs ever since Ebden dropped his serve in the first game. The Australian slowly picked up but Somdev gradually tightened his grip over the match. The Indian broke Ebden twice in both the sets. He is also in contention in the men’s doubles and is scheduled to play semifinals with Rohan Bopanna later in the dayWith inputs from PTIlast_img read more

first_imgGoa: FC Goa struck the right chords on the field to ease past Chennaiyin FC 3-0 in their first game of the Indian Super League 2019-20 season at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Wednesday. The ISL runners-up were a step ahead of their opponents in all areas of the field and were the better team overall. New signing Seiminlen Doungel scored on his debut to break the deadlock in the 30th minute. All-time ISL top-scorer Ferran Corominas struck in the 62nd minute and substitute Carlos Pena added a third in the 81st minute to consign an unimpressive Chennaiyin to a defeat. The hosts were quick to get on the ball and spray passes around right from the start. However, it were the visitors who first went close when Dragos Firtulescu was fed through on goal in the 12th minute. A last-ditch Seriton Fernandes challenge prevented a catastrophic start for the hosts.Sergio Lobera’s men soon regained their rhythm to pose a serious threat to the Chennaiyin defence. In the 19th minute, Ferran Corominas picked up the ball from midfield and released Seiminlen Doungel into the box. Chennaiyin goalkeeper Vishal Kaith was on to the ball in a flash before Goa’s new signing could pounce and take a shot. A minute later, Manvir Singh attempted a powerful strike after making room for himself at the edge of the box and once again, Kaith was up to the task, pulling off a diving save to his left.Goa’s intent in the attacking third was rewarded at the half an hour mark. Manvir Singh beat his marker and crossed into the box from the right flank. The striker’s cross took a double deflection off Eli Sabia and Doungel before rolling into the net.The hosts remained on top of the game and refused to sit back after taking the lead. Brandon Fernandes’ piledriver just before half-time had Vishal Kaith well beaten but the ball flew just wide. Ferran Corominas’s curling effort a minute later was tipped away by an acrobatic Kaith who kept Chennaiyin in the game.John Gregory replaced Dhanpal Ganesh with the more creative Anirudh Thapa in midfield to swing the contest back in his team’s favour. The hosts, however, proved difficult to break down.Goa continued to create chances and soon doubled their lead. Manvir Singh broke away through the middle and found Jackichand Singh in space to his right. The winger’s low cross into the center of the box was guided into the net in by ISL’s all-time top scorer Ferran Corominas who scored his 35th league goal.Chennaiyin struggled in the attacking third and were unable to find a way back into the game. Lallianzuala Chhangte did have a chance to pull one back when he tried to curl the ball into the top right corner from the edge of the box, but Mohammed Nawaz produced a brilliant save to preserve Goa’s clean sheet.FC Goa added a third in the 81st minute and sealed the win when a Brandon free-kick from the left was poked into the net by Carlos Pena at the near post. chennaiyin fcfc goafootballindian football First Published: October 23, 2019, 9:57 PM IST Get the best of News18 delivered to your inbox – subscribe to News18 Daybreak.
