What Man Can Do, Woman Can Do – With Flying Colors

first_imgThings have surely improved for women in Liberia. Gone are the days when a woman sits at home all day waiting for her breadwinner to come home while spending those long waiting hours cleaning, cooking, ironing, minding the children climaxed with massaging her spouse’s feet when he finally does arrive.Contrast this scenario to today’s women. They study, raise families, and run organizations. They even drive taxis and motorcycles. In Liberia, they ride motorcycles with a singular objective, and that is to make money, while feeling the wind blow through their hair. Some say they plan on doing it for life.Cairo, Egypt was one of the first countries to begin putting pink colored uniforms on their female drivers, a service marketed as a safe way for women to travel on their own or in rented vehicles. Safety was an issue for Egyptian women and the pink uniforms helped civilians to identify the female drivers and also help look out for them.Liberia has also picked up on the same idea, but with pink helmets and jackets for female motorbike riders, christening them ‘Pink Panthers.” It all started with donations from Henrietta Tolbert of the Angie Brooks International Center for Women Empowerment (whom we have contacted or an interview but still await her response). Since her donations, the Pink Panthers are now able to identify with and be on the lookout for one another, as all motorcyclists do.According to a recent BBC story, tired of being robbed and harassed, Liberian female motorcyclists formed the Pink Panthers collective to make sure that they were easy to spot.David Johnson, a motorcyclist who lost his brother to a motorcycle accident last month, says he has been impressed with the way the women, though only a handful, have come together.“You know, as a woman, you should know your place in terms of knowing how to act and fit in. Sometimes these women try to act like men and can get very aggressive with people. I don’t know, but we are used to seeing women. The President made it easy for everyone to get used to seeing women working, too. But they are so aggressive at times, and that can lead to people wanting to take advantage of them,” Johnson stated. But according to Michael, an arresting motorcycle union officer who runs traffic to make sure that motorcyclists are under control, he sometimes comes across these women. He feels that they are doing a great job by making money from their interest in riding motorcycles.“I like to see women, especially those who look focused and don’t allow anyone to interfere with their purpose out here. With some more training and a little more sensitizing of the public about them being out here, too, they will be okay. Every motorbike rider is robbed and harassed, not just them; though I haven’t seen it. People need to just respect the fact that driving motorcycles for a living is not easy and they should give us a chance for taking the risk that comes with it,” he shared. For now, safety is a prime concern for women considering commercial motorcycling or being taxi drivers, which carry the risks of assault, harassment and theft. What measures can be put in place other than having them wear pink to further protect them?Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest When the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency earlier this month entered into a consent decree agreeing to a court-enforced timeline for establishing the Renewable Volume Obligation numbers for 2014 and 2015 for the Renewable Fuel Standard, the delayed timeline — especially for 2014 — were a reflection of the problems the EPA set up for itself by numerous delays.“Congress created the Renewable Fuel Standard to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil and to provide cleaner domestic fuel choices for consumers,” said NCGA President Chip Bowling. “And the EPA has finally provided additional clarity about their timeline for announcing the 2014 through 2016 renewable fuel requirements. We have expressed our concerns about the continued delays to the EPA, and we will be taking them at their word that they will adhere to this new deadline. NCGA will continue to work with the EPA to ensure the numbers are consistent with the statute passed by Congress and put the RFS back on track.”Under the consent decree and other commitments, the EPA will follow the following timeline:By June 1, the agency will propose volume requirements for 2015 and 2016 and will re-propose volume requirements for 2014, by June 1, that reflect the volumes of renewable fuel that were actually used in 2014.By November 30, EPA will finalize volume requirements for 2014, 2015 and 2016, and resolve a pending waiver petition for 2014.With regard to the RFS and biomass-based diesel volume requirement for 2017, EPA will propose and finalize a volume on the same schedule. What makes the RVO such a major concern for corn growers? In November 2013, the EPA proposed to reduce the baseline 2014 renewable volume obligation for corn ethanol in the RFS from 14.4 billion gallons to 13 billion gallons — a 10% cut. They proposed this after a record corn crop in 2013, which was then followed by a second record crop in 2014, with the price of corn falling to below the cost of production in many areas. If the RVO reduction took place as proposed by the EPA, estimates were for the price of corn to fall by as much as an additional $1.10. With corn stocks high and prices low well into 2015’s planting season, NCGA and its growers will continue to track progress on these deadlines and hold EPA accountable. When the EPA announced its lower volume for 2014, NCGA activated its grassroots membership in a number of ways, and saw the largest response ever seen for a call to action. When the time came for our growers to speak up, they did so — loudly and forcefully. NCGA’s growers and allies sent the EPA a clear signal when this proposal was first issued, with nearly 200,000 people responding to the public comment opportunity in opposition to the reduction. Nearly 10,000 farmers called the White House directly.last_img read more

first_imgImagine having to traverse through a riverbed to get to and from your community on a daily basis, or travel for miles using the alternative route when it becomes impassable. That was the reality for hundreds of residents in several communities in North East St. Catherine, when the Dover Castle main road was left impassable following the collapse of a bridge during Tropical Storm Nicole in 2010.The collapsed bridge meant that motorists had to drive through an orange grove to get to the communities of Redwood and Guys Hill. With the Government’s recent construction of a $23.3 million Bailey bridge, the residents’ lives have been significantly changed and they now have easier access to their homes. The single lane bridge, which was officially opened last week, replaces the structure that collapsed two years ago. It serves the communities of Dover Castle, Redwood, Jubilee Town, Golden Grove, Guys Hill and adjoining areas.Speaking to JIS News, resident Devon Morris, says he is extremely grateful. “What dem do today was nice and joyful. Dem see to it that we get a bridge so everything will be alright, we can drive through comfortable,” he says.He adds that without the bridge, “we have a hard time with people coming into the district”.Joined by several other beneficiaries, Mr. Morris thanked the Government and National Works Agency (NWA), for the new bridge.Speaking to JIS News during the official opening, Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport, Works and Housing, Hon. Richard Azan, said the project, which got underway in January this year, was completed within schedule and budget.Works included the construction of gabion baskets; bridge abutments; a rubble retaining wall and approach roads. The State Minister urged operators of heavy duty vehicles to use alternative routes at John’s Pen and Berkshire Hall, as the structure has a carrying capacity of only 50 tonnes.Meanwhile, NWA Communications Manager, Stephen Shaw, says warning signs will be erected shortly to advise motorists of the limited carrying capacity.“Being a 50-tonne structure, we don’t expect to see a trailer going across this bridge because it is not built to accommodate those types of units,” he tells JIS News.Mr. Shaw is urging residents to assist in keeping the structure in place and to ensure that it is not compromised by misuse. “What we would also be appealing to residents to do, is assist us in keeping this very vital piece of infrastructure in place. They are the ones who have been suffering since Tropical Storm Nicole in 2010, when they had to be walking in the river bed, climbing out and then finding their way beyond this point. So they have an interest in ensuring that the bridge stays in place and is not compromised in any way by misuse,” he says.Member of Parliament for North East St. Catherine, Gregory Mair, commended the Government for undertaking the project. “This is a process that was initiated all the way back from 2010 and the present Government made it their business to see it come to its completion. I am very happy for the people in the surrounding areas; finally we got the bridge done. So I think it’s a relief and I am extremely appreciative for the construction of this bridge,” he said.Other works under the project included: river training works 50 metres upstream and 50 metres downstream; realignment of the roadway; and the raising and re-paving of the roadway with asphaltic concrete. The contractor for the project was Aegisco Limited.By Chris Patterson, JIS Reporterlast_img read more

first_img The Minister, who is scheduled to open the debate on the Bill during today’s sitting of the House of Representatives, said the concerns raised in the media were unexpected as “I did not table the Bill without having the necessary consultations”. Story Highlights Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, says he will be inviting architects and engineers to a meeting to discuss issues they have raised about the new Building Bill.He made the disclosure while addressing a national building policy workshop at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston on Tuesday (June 6).The Minister, who is scheduled to open the debate on the Bill during today’s sitting of the House of Representatives, said the concerns raised in the media were unexpected as “I did not table the Bill without having the necessary consultations”.He indicated that within his first three months as Local Government Minister, he held extensive discussions with various players in the building industry.“Before we sent this Bill to have the final work done on it, we circulated it, we invited (stakeholders) in the business (to make recommendations), and early this year, I met with the team and we signed off on what was tabled in Parliament,” he noted. The Minister said significant changes were made to the Bill based on the suggestions put forward, but noted that it was not possible to accommodate all views. He noted that the accompanying Regulations will address some of the concerns outlined.Minister McKenzie said the country cannot afford to postpone the debate “on the long-awaited and important bit of legislation that needs to guide the country’s building development”.The Building Bill seeks to establish a modern legislative framework that will serve to reduce the vulnerability of Jamaica’s built environment and ensure public safety and welfare; minimise damage caused by natural and man-made hazards; prevent squatter settlements; and promote sustainable development. The legislation will also streamline the permit application system to eliminate unnecessary referrals and expedite responses; facilitate the introduction of special express services; and ensure the rights of persons with disabilities regarding accessibility, safety and user-friendliness.It also provides for the establishment of the National Building Code, and identifies the Bureau of Standards Jamaica as the agency that will set the acceptable local and international standards for construction. In addition, the legislation establishes that the municipal corporations are to be the local building authorities and will be responsible for inspecting, certifying and taking the actions necessary to approve new structures, change existing buildings, or destroy dangerous structures.center_img Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. first_imgzoomImage Courtesy: CHC Helicopter Norway/ Video Screenshot Maritime lawyers at Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina & Winkleman have filed a Class Action lawsuit against Viking Cruises regarding the Viking Sky incident from March 2019.The law firm said that the lawsuit involves Viking Ocean’s “knowing and intentional decision to sail the Viking Sky, carrying roughly 1,000 paying passengers, into notoriously perilous waters and directly into the path of a massive weather event known as a Bomb Cyclone.”In the midst of the cyclone, the vessel’s engines suffered a complete failure leaving it adrift in Hustadvika, off the coast of Norway, in late March. The cruise ship was battered by storm 10 gale force winds and more than 30 foot waves, according to the law firm.As the complaint lays out, this weather event was no surprise. Instead it was properly forecast days in advance. Despite the consensus by numerous weather forecasting agencies’ warning of extremely severe winds of storm 10 gale force capabilities expected in the vessel’s intended and actual path, Viking Sky left for its voyage on March 21, 2019.By the early morning of Saturday, March 23, the winds and rough seas were battering the vessel and later that day, while sailing through waves of over 30 feet and winds exceeding hurricane strength, Viking Sky suffered a complete engine failure. The 2017-built ship sent out a mayday signal after losing its engines, prompting a rescue operation in which close to 500 passengers were airlifted by helicopter.“At no time were the passengers advised or warned of the impending peril. It was not until the next day when large waves were rocking the cruise ship, causing passengers and crewmembers to become seasick, did the vessel alert the passengers it would not be making the intended stop,” the Maritime lawyers said.Consequently, Lipcon, Margulies, Alsina & Winkleman seeks any and all damages available, including punitive damages, based on the allegation that Viking negligently sailed through perilous waters into the path of the cyclone.last_img read more
